Buffalo rifle

With feed and extraction, ejection issues this rifle does not maker the cut for me on a DG rifle.......
Which feed, extraction , ejection issues would those be? Have you used my RSM have you? Or actually maybe I should ask how many RSM's have you owned/used with all these stated issues?

Well lets start with the 416 Rigby, they all had serious feeding issues so much so that Ruger changed the extractor design specifically because of feeding issues unique to the .416 Rigby. Most factory M77 and RSM will not eject the fired case when the rifle/bolt is operated at high speed. The case goes up and not out(90 degree) and ends up back in the way as you close the bolt. Jam.....Now during normal shooting you may not have an issue but add the pressure of a proficiency exam or having to stop a charging elephant and you operate the bolt at high speed, this is when you need reliability, every time, not most of the time but every time.

Have I used your RSM have I? No I have not.....

I do not own any RSM's as I prefer a 100% reliable rifle with a proven track record....and therefore I use Brno ZKK602 actioned rifles.

And yes many people believe that what they have is the best and yes not all RSM rifles are bad but some are truly problematic.(so much so that Ruger will not work on them) I have seen these issues on shoots and actual hunts in the field.

You can also search around on this forum as well as others and educate yourself on the issues that other hunters have had with RSM rifles. Maybe yours is cool and flawless, no idea how often it gets used, but many have had issues....

Ok, I’ll be the unpopular one here, the outcast...

If I were to choose an American cartridge to hunt buffalo I’d use the ubiquitous .458wm loaded with a 450-500gn at 2250-2150fps.

Done the job many times in the past and is better than ever before with modern powders and projectiles

I’m actually using my .458 on a cull Buffalo hunt next year where I’ll be culling 10 Buffalo except I’ll be using a 5500gn Woodleigh RNSP at around 2100fps.

Andvrest assured, if it fails I’ll be man enough to be honest and let you all know...

Cheers,

Russ

A 5500 grain bullet at 2100 fps, I don’t want to pull the trigger on that monster!

I’d like to go on a Trophy bull cull hunt with my .458 WM or Lott? Too many large bulls that need to be culled to give the younger ones a chance? Ha! Ha! Ha!

So the Brno ZKK 602 is 100% reliable? I think most of what you are saying is based on personal preference and opinion.........

I have a old single square bridge Mauser rifle made by Rigby that has never had a feeding or ejecting issue!

Yes and yes and personal experience.....

No rifle is 100% reliable, but the goal is to get as close to 100% as possible.
BTW - The PH's of this world (which includes @IvW) are considered an excellent source of information.
From real world field experience alone, not time spent on a rifle range.
Their lives, and the lives of the ones around them depend on the reliability of their rifles.
It is for that reason that an overwhelming majority choose a true CRF Mauser style rifle.

I'm not saying other rifles aren't reliable...just that the ones chosen by PH's have a proven track record.
You can take note or disregard because the need of a PH are very different than the needs of a client.

To start with this conversation on the DG rifles segment is without merit..ANY rifle, make model, even the best of custom guns, should be gone over with a fine tooth comb as to function and reliability and accuracy work for that matter, shot as much as reasonably possible before it ever goes to Africa, and bush repair kit of pins, screws, glass bedding in the tubes wire and a cleaning kit with a rod..Ive never needed that kit but its there and I have in fact lent it to a PH and a hunter over the years...

As to the 550 Woodleigh it is an outstanding bullet in the 375 with the Woodleigh 350 and in the .416 in 450 gr. it seems to do a complete caliber increase, not scientific but gave me that impression..I liked th PP (protected point) best btw, but in a herd hunt the RN makes good since....I have not hunted with the 550 gr. in a .458 but I would venture to say it would be best in the LOTT or its class of 45 as the .458s only weakness is velocity and not by much but its there and going heavier I would not recommend for myself, I would stick with the tried and true 500 gr. Woodleigh at as much as my gun would handle safely, in my gun that would be almost 2100 FPS and 2000 has been all I ever needed..Just my two bits and too each his own on such subjects..

I think maybe a lot of you guys in America might not realise the amount of hunting experience some of us Aussies have. It is a bit different for some of us over here, we don't just pay to go on one or 2 hunts a year, some of us hunt all year on our own so I don't really fit the "needs of a client" subject matter. And also I am sure a lot of African PH's are a great source of information, just in this case it seems to me it is based more on personal preference as are probably most of the comments in this thread...........

@Aussie_Hunter , I am a retired professional hunter ... As well . I 2nd IvW's fondness for the BRNO ZKK 600 series .

Barring the .458 Winchester magnum calibre variants ... These things are built like tanks .

I wrote an article , on African Hunting Forums ... Which high lights the reasons for their superiority .

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
Found out the trigger word in the end... It was muzzle or velocity. dropped them and it posted.:)
