Buffalo rifle show and tell

I guess I don't have a great answer. When I started using QD rings I didn't want anything extra near the ejection port and figured the left side made more sense. Have them that way on 2 or 3 rifles and haven't seen where they cause an issue for me on the left side.
I read a thread once in which it was discussed that the way you carry your rifle on your shoulder is a consideration for what side to install the quick levers on because if the levers are on the side of the rifle that is riding against your body, there is a chance it can loosen up while walking. There seemed to be some login in that for what its worth.

I have all mine with the levers on the opposite side from the ejection port... the RIGHT side. Works for this southpaw shooter.

These are just a few of my favorite things... The Sako Brown Bear in .450 Rigby with the Trijicon RMR is probably my favorite rifle, and I have killed three buffalo with it.

Ah, thanks! Just over 48 inches. He wasn't even the one we were after! Here he is below the one I was really going for...which is the only buff that has ever given me the shakes. I chased him all over that mountain and never got him. He's still alive up there.

Where is that!!!?!?!?!?!?!?!

No sling so barrel band doesn’t matter. I ran a 1-5x scope on my first hunt. When I got home immediately replaced it with a red dot. I don’t see the point in shooting a buffalo outside 50m and a red dot it the best thing for close range

Alright gents, I've acquired my .375 and I'm fitting it out for my first buffalo hunt in 2027.

So share yours, what do you feel makes a proper buffalo bolt gun?

Optic? Iron sights? Sling or no sling? Barrel band? What do you consider essential, especially from experienced cape buffalo hunters. Pictures are very welcome.

For me, if you dont get within 50 yards, your not hunting buffalo the right way....but thats just me.

My Buffalo rifle is a bit working class compared to some of the beauties on here. But it works, and is only 9 pounds scoped.

Mk. X Mauser 458WM. Topped with a Meopta R2 1-6 illuminated, in a B&C Medallist stock. It's has an NECG 3-position Model 70 style safety and a barrel band fitted, and is fed a diet of 480gn Woodleighs.

I listened to Kevin Robertson and got a Ruger MK II in 375 H&H. The trigger was terrible so it got a Timney trigger, which is almost mandatory on that rifle. Then I listened to Phillip Glass and out a Leupold VX-5 2-10x42 in case of an opportunity on plains game. The first morning tracking Buffalo we stumbled onto this kudu at 300 yards walking toward us.

Guys, you didn't disappoint. Thanks for sharing!

I purchased a Montana Rifle Co .375 H&H from a member here, and have been going through the barrel break in and getting to know it a little. Its fun! Currently running the iron sights, and as much as I'd like to hunt open sights, I think my eyes dictate that my first buffalo hunt she'll be wearing an optic. Likely a leupold 1.5-5 with a firedot.

I am hardly a Buffalo hunting expert but have killed a Cape Buffalo with my DG rifle. It is a 375HH, is exceptionally accurate when fired from a bench or other solid rest and I am reasonably accurate with it off sticks. I can hit an 8" gong off sticks from 200y every shot and am very confident with it. I have taken, Blue Wildebeest, Kudu and the Buff with the 375 and it is a great all round cartridge for Africa.

Mine is an old custom rifle built by ER Shaw from Pennsylvania on an Enfield Pattern 14 magnum CRF action in a lovely figured walnut stock. It has an old supple leather sling that I use to carry it Rhodesian style (weak side muzzle down) as I am loath to use the African carry unless I am at the front of the column and as the client that is not the case. Rhodesian style if you practice it even a little can enable you to safely carry with comfort and can deploy onto the sticks in only a couple of seconds.

My scope is a 1-6x Kahles K16i with illuminated reticle in steel Leupold 30mm rings. The thermal expansion differences of aluminum vs steel means that if you use aluminum rings, sooner or later they will get loose. It may be years later depending on their use and abuse. For DG rifles, and benchrest competition rifles, I use steel rings on steel bases. If your aluminum rings stay tight, good for you. Most of mine do too. But, again if your life is on the line, you eliminate every variable you can and try to minimize the others. I do not use QD mounts for that same reason. They are handy until they become a liability. My primary DG rifle does not have iron sights but my secondary one does. With the scope at 1x and the red dot and ring illuminated, I can hunt with it just like a red-dot reflex sight with both eyes open and in low light conditions. Dialed to 6x it is clear enough to score tgts at 200y and shoot steel out to 400y. I have never used it to hunt game past 200y but it is capable out to 250 or 300y before running out of velocity (not accuracy). For Buffalo you want to be closer than 100y or even 80y if possible. They are tough and long shots are for gophers.

My rifle shoots all factory loads I have tried very well, and most are sub MOA. Reloads in PPU brass do not agree with it for some reason. So, those are avoided. My chosen load for Buff is Barnes 300g TSX and even though the factory claimed velocity is 2500fps, my rifle averages closer to 2600fps on the chrono which helps when the chips are down. One thing to consider. I think 375HH is adequate for Buffalo but it is not the ideal Mbogo stopper. If I ever hunt them again, I will be using something larger, like the 458WM or similar. Yes, they kick a little more but not enough to matter. If you can handle a light weight upland 12ga with high brass loads, you can handle a DG rifle.

Well he did have a stroke during the 3 years he’s had it.

I called him up several months ago and asked him if he could give me an ETA……

“Nope I’ve given up on trying to predict the future, but it’s progressing nicely.”

As I recall, Dennis has been ill with a number of issues. Great guy, it did take longer than expected. He asked what I was going to feed it and I said AFrames which feed great. Recently I purchased some CEB solids and worried I might have feed issues. They also feed nicely. I love the rifle though at almost 11 lbs scoped it’s not the lightest. Hopefully get to the range this week to try the solids out. Planning to get it out in the near future on elephant.

Just a note about hunting in general, ALWAYS put a piece of electrical tape over the muzzle. If you stick your muzzle in the dirt, or are crawling during a stalk, no worries about dirt in the bore. When you shoot, the bullet will blow right through no problem. Not a problem in Africa, but also keeps snow out of the bore also.
used condoms in the desert......didn't have any other use for them.

I used house electric tape.

Amazon. Rifle barrel covers....snug fit.
