This hunt is offered by ERIC ROSE; my advice to anyone considering this hunt be very careful of Mr Rose; after hunting with him more than 2 years ago I never received my capes or full mount from him. Despite the fact that I paid for shipping, taxidermy etc. all my emails, phone calls and sms to Rose was ignored. In return I was physically threatened, swarn at, insulted and called all sorts of names by this individual. What is interesting is that I am not the only hunter that has been ripped off and had a bad experience with Mr Rose, Mel Telponce is another am I am aware of at least another hunter who never received his trophies, please look at the the articles in the Hunt Report December 2013 and January 2014. My best advice is stay clear of this person, not only is he bad news but the whole operation is illegal as I never once saw any documentation supporting it's legality.

After years of persuasion, this outfitter has been able to get a put together a hunt for hunters hoping to come to Japan, to bow or spear hunt for the biggest free range sika in the world with brown bear also available. This will be the first opportunity for nonresidents to hunt in Japan in many decades. He has arranged with the local government a permit to cull the abundant sika and although the use firearms will not be allowed it will be possible to bow hunt or use spears. This is only for a small province on the island Hokkaido, by no means does it mean all of Japan is open to bowhunting. Permits are issued to landowners who then employ us to help with the problem. They call it pest control, although I'm sure you will have a different term for it as the stags are the biggest and most plentiful in the world. There is only one SCI listing for Hokkaido sika, the deer we shoot will be gold listings.

The outfitter has been working hard to get opportunities for non-residents and hoped for firearms to be allowed but stuck out, but he is more than happy about the bow-hunting, on private property only. This is a great chance for folks who are looking to experience hunting in Japan and get the biggest Sika of their lives. The rut is mid October to early November and there are a couple slots open at the moment.

Hunting in the winter is very good and there are many blinds set up. There is no doubt that there will be good opportunities to get stags down as the animals are numerous. The outfitter has been hunting here for years and taken many trophy class stags, many in the 200SCI class, all taken with shotgun. He has guided many Japanese hunters and his success rate is 100%. You will not regret an experience like bowhunting Sika deer in Japan!

Cost:
Seven day hunt - $8500US - Includes two trophy stags
Five day hunt - $6500US - Includes two trophy stags
Observers - $200 a day
Any bear will have a trophy fee of $5000US.
Additional stags - $1,500
Does - free of charge
Permit for hunt - 20,000 Yen (approximately $250 US)

*Included are all accommodations, trophy preparation, meals and transportation after arriving at Kushiro airport or train station. The Japan air pass is the cheapest way to fly up from Tokyo.

*Bows should be sent to outfitter prior to hunt, not brought with you, then taken with you when you leave. Or gear can be borrowed from outfitter, no charge.

*The hunting will take place around the city of Kushiro on the island of Hokkaido. Hunting will be 30-40min from town and hunters can stay at a nice hotel in town or stay in a spike camp.

Please contact me for more details.

As a brand new member here on AH and this is your only post perhaps you can give us some background on your hunt.
Like pictures of your trophies that were left behind.
Where is Eric Rose from? What is the outfit.

Please post one here. Hunting reports here are free and available to everyone.

As this hunt offer was originally posted here by a responsible agent. I would like to see some of the fuel for your fire before I strike a match and join you for the roasting.

There are three report synopsis that are public on the web. One by the individual you note above and the other report appears to be positive so, is this you?

After all the reading I have done on this hunt I can see that it is on the leading edge.
There is NO HUNTING in Japan. This is a Cull hunt and it is admitted that is a back door method of being able to "hunt".
This would be comparable to a PAC hunt in Africa. (My characterization).

After that I have no idea about Eric Rose and whether or how he failed to produce for the hunters.

I will be emailing Eric Rose to invite him to comment.

I am Eric Rose, the fellow at hand regarding this hunt. I would first of all like to thank africahunting.com for infroming me of this negative post and giving me a chance to reply to it.

TONY RATHBONE is the one who posted it, and like any other post he has made regarding me, it is completely full of lies. Tony operates a taxidermy outfit called Field and Stream Taxidermy. He is married to a Russian lady who he met through the internet. They have immigrated to Australia. If his personal address is needed I have it.

It is true that a few years ago Rathbone did in fact come here to hunt with me, as an observer. There is no legal way for a non-resident to handle any firearm while here and the only way to participate in hunting here is to go along as an observer. I informed these situations to Tony who agreed to them as long as could have the trophies. I agreed. I have this all in email. Tony has went on to lie about these facts on other internet sites.

I wish things would have went simply, but Tony was a real handful. When I met him at the airport he happily informed me that he had decided to stay an extra five days (WHICH I NEVER OFFERED) and "hoped he wasn't intruding" but hoped I wouldn't charge him more than our original deal as he was just going along and it wouldn't cost me anything. It is my fault for not telling him to bugger off, but I also find it sad that Tony didn't realize he was intruding on my family time, as well as my own personal hunting days. He went along with me, then complained that he wasn't the one pulling the trigger, and that since the indigenous animals here weren't costing me money he should have free range to kill as he pleased.

Through our deal he stayed at the best hotel in town at my cost. No problem. But after the seven days we arranged ended, he decided the hotel cost was too much and asked to stay at my house. Looking back I should've refused, as he has since went on to prance around the internet complaining about my then pregnant wife's cooking, while forgetting to mention that he was in fact staying well beyond his welcome without paying a bit extra. He also complained about the bed etc in our extra room, for which he was paying nothing.

During our hunting we were able to take a few animals. As part of our deal Tony was to have a couple nice stag heads. It wasn't our deal for him to pose with the taken stags, but he asked every time, with every animal, which I found to be less than that of a honest hunter. Before he came I informed him that in mid-late winter here that these deer lose hair from rubbing and slipping and capes would be nominal at best. He informed me that as a taxidermist he was sure they would be fine and I took his word for it. But while Tony was here, he found the HEADSKINNING OF THESE SIKA TO BE A BIT TOO MUCH and had me ask my local taxidermist to do the work. But the capes were too far gone to be tanned, and were unable to be sent to Tony. I was able to send the heads/antlers and arranged for him to have different capes.

It must be understood that Tony is trying to turn the gallery at his taxidermy outfit into a "museum" to collect tax money. Tony is shopping hard for someone to buy his business. I ask anyone who might consider such an adventure to stay far, far away from TONY RATHBONE, his continuous lies and FIELD AND STREAM TAXIDERMY. In fact a personal friend of Tony's emailed me informing me of his lack of character. Tony told me while he was here that if I were to ever go to SA and needed any kind of permit that he could arrange it, wink wink. I know that TONY RATHBONE is friends with a number of SERIOUS worldwide poachers. He also made it clear that all cat hunting in SA is doped. And so it is that I will never go to South Africa, but thanks him for the inside information.

Also, Tony showed up without any proper hunting gear, including winter socks, long-johns, pants, coat, nor gloves. He did have a nice pair binos though. But no backpack. I borrowed him all of these things. He also borrowed a Nikkor camera lens (18-200mm) from me, which he damaged and returned to me saying, " There seems to be a defect with this lens". And yes, he was very informed about the weather before hew came. His only other hunting trip north of the equator was a disastrous trip to South Dakota, USA. It turns out I'm from SD and have been in contact with the outfitter. In the middle of winter Rathbone shot a bison in rancher's feedlot for a certain sum, then had it hauled a few hundred yards away to make it look like a real hunt. I have pictures of this. TONY RATHBONE is a disgrace to anyone who calls himself a hunter. It took him two years to get the trophies as RATHBONE made things extremely difficult for the folks there.

As the problem with the condition capes went on....TONY RATHBONE MADE THE IRREPRESSIBLE, UNFORGIVABLE MISTAKE OF EMAILING MY WIFE (THROUGH OUR PUBLIC BUSINESS) AND THREATENING HER AND MY NEWBORN SON'S
EXISTENCE. As any of you could imagine, some intense emails followed. Although I have never threatened RATHBONE nor his FAMILY, I certainly hope to meet TONY RATHBONE again, for it is without doubt that he will make great lion (or perhaps our local bear population) bait. After his threats to my family I had absolutely no respect for this foul piece of skunkshit called TONY RATRHBONE. I called him to sincerely hope bad things for his future. But he declined to talk with me on the phone, and to this day I consider him a supreme coward.

Tony also has an incredibly bad memory and must think that in my small town we don't get internet and cannot see his internet lies. Thankfully a few folks have informed me of his bogus accusations. While Tony was here I arranged a meeting with local government officials to show that people would come from far ends to hunt here, if it were only legal to handle firearms. We met with the top local government officials, including the mayor. Tony told them that many more people would come if a firearms hunt could be arranged, and that he was frustrated not being able to pull the trigger himself. Of course a newspaper reporter was on hand with the mayor shaking hands with Rathbone. These things were recorded in our local newspaper. As RATHBONE used this trip as a business expense, I figure his business should be responsible for his lies, and sincere legal action being undertaken. How about TONY RATHbONE disputing this? Please step forward.

The other hunter RATHBONE mentioned, Mel Topance, a 83 longbow hunter, did not collect an animal while here, and of course there were no trophies to send etc. But another complete BS lie from TONY RATHBONE is not unexpected. Although I am no fan of Toponce's, he should be able to confirm that he didn't take an animal while here. meltoponce@aol.com

In closing I would like to again send a sincere ありがとうございました to africahuinting.com for informing me of the lies TONY RATHBONE and (Field and Stream Taxidermy) have posted on your site. I hope to increase interest in hunting in Japan and help our local economy, but it is "hunters" like RATHBONE who ruin great chances like this for all.
I would be happy to field some questions, if any, but I cannot promise to answer all as I do spend a great deal of my time hunting, not stuck behind this computer screen.
Cheers. Eric

The hunters that I sent to visit Eric had great trips. Not a single complaint from anyone. I don't know who this fs1256 person is or why they won't identify themselves. Regardless, my hunters all had super experiences in Japan.

Hello. I am looking for a bow hunting outfitter in Hong Kong or Shaghai. Does anyone know of any place? Thanks!

I've never hunted in Japan but I did spend a couple of days there in transit to a spear fishing trip to Micronesia and I loved Japan, the little bit that I saw anyway.
For adventurous travelers, as a tourist destination in general, I would definitely recommend it.
Combined with the possibility to bag a couple of regal game animals (hopefully with a traditional Japanese long bow), what's not to like?

There are two sides to this story...............perhaps there will be a post or two from other hunters who can confirm or deny. Posts like these, although contentious, are the real value of this website..................................and there is a surprising amount of adventure factor in going to Japan...................................FWB

Is this hunt still available? I'm gonna be in Japan for awhile does any one know where I go to start the hunting exams and licensing process

This spear hunting thing has me wondering. If any of you have done it or know something about it please reply on my spear hunting thread

Contact Eric Rose, his email is in the thread. Maybe PM here as well. Good luck!!!

Eric is still out rockin it.
Nice Stag.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
