Bought another rifle but need help

Bob, IMO with that nice of a bore, you hit a home run with that rifle!!! Almost no way to shoot the bore/throat out with reasonable 25-20 loads. Have at it! I'll continue to poke around for background info on SS barrels in the 92s and in Winchesters of comparable age. I'm sure Madis has some info on early Winchester SS barrels, but have to dig it out of his material. :)

IIRC, and it's been awhile, but 2400 really worked well for me in the 25-20.

On the marlin forum ther is a brilliant 81 pages thread on loading the 25/20. As 2400 is like rocking horse poop at the moment a good load appears to be 12.5 grains of 2207/4198 FOR 1600 fps or 13.5 grains of ADI BM1.
Bob

Threaded muzzle? For a silencer?
@Forrest Halley
I don't know what that's about. The Smith may have been pissed and threaded the wrong end or when the throat wears unscrew it and turn it around to double the barrel life.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha

Dang that 92 looks to be more "weathered" than even my 116 year old m92 .

Of course, the magazine tube is about all that remains "factory" on mine.
The M1892 does make for a nice .357 rifle and shoots the same ammo as my Model 19 S&W.

Yes, understood- some powders might be like finding Unicorn apples, something like 4198 or Benchmark would also be good choices.

@crs
It's not weathered it has acquired the patina of age and use. That's how I like it .

That does not appear to be an abused rifle! A "japaned" finish simply does that. Even the regular blued finish flaked off of the receivers of many Winchester levers of certain DOMs- not because of weathering or abuse but simply because of the incompatibility between the bluing and certain receiver alloys.

You can also determine the barrel date in addition to the receiver serial date. Carefully remove the fore stock and look under the barrel near the recover. There should be a two number date stamped there indicating DOM of the barrel. Not unusual for there to be up to a couple of years difference because of method of manufacture. Bins filled with parts used during any one assembly run.

Here is a copied extract from Madis' book that covers all Winchester models of that era, including the M 92s.

I hate to do it to him, not really, but ask Cal Pappas. Before his double rifle days, he was the go to guy for anything Winchester

$8.00 then is $121.67 now, per the online U.S. Inflation Calculator. Highway robbery both then and now! Ha! Ha!

I would like to know how much the retail price on that rifle was in 1926 when the stainless steel barrels were introduced? I'm thinking $25-35? When you add the $8 for the stainless barrel, it's quite a significant price increase.

Well I gone and done it again bought another rifle I didn't t need but I wanted it. Problem is I need some help with it for information as I a m stumped even Dr Google can't tell me much

It is an 1892 Winchester lever action in 25/20 wcf. Nothing unusual in that you say well here is where it gets interesting.
It has an original Winchester marked STAINLESS STEEL OCTAGONAL BARREL finish partially in the original Japan black.
Can anyone provide me with any information on the stainless barrel.
Thanks in advance
Bob

the title is redundant lol

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
Found out the trigger word in the end... It was muzzle or velocity. dropped them and it posted.:)

2,822fps, ES 8.2
This compares favorably to 7 Rem Mag. with less powder & recoil.
