Bloody idiot

At 26 I was offered a chance to return home to Zimbabwe and train as a professional hunter, it took me a week to decide. Despite much criticism and heckling from family and friends, I handed in my notice with my employer, sold my newly built starter home, bought a 4x4 and a Bruno.375H&H and headed home to Zimbabwe. Nearly 33 years later as a PH, I have absolutely NO regrets.
I hate to think where I might be if I had not taken that decsion. I have lived a life of adventure, travel and interesting people from all over the Globe. I thank God daily for my life and that I was given that choice, that I made the right decision for me.
I am a licensed PH and guided/hunted Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Cameroon, Mozambique and more recently South Africa, with some elephant hunts in Botswana.
There's nothing that I love more(besides my beautiful family) than walking behind a big elephant bull or a herd of Buffalo in the early morning, dew on the grass, first light filtering through the trees and the francolin calling to the bush that the day has begun. The smell of fresh Buffalo dung in the cool morning air(always reminds me of growing up on the farm).
In conclusion, taking that initial rash decision back in 1989 was the best decision of my life, and a little advise for those who struggle with making a decision.......if it feels right, and you really want too, it is probably the right decision, so just get on and do it and live with your decision!

Great story Matetsi, thank you. I have forwarded it to my God son who has just begun his PH appyship, and I think will be encouraged by your story.

I am sitting on the porch planning our next hunt with the Carruther's & Co group, and of course choices crop up, conflicting diaries and so on. Some are mine too. But I can't get away from the fact that time marches on, opportunities linger but a short time, and they are gone like the morning mist. My greatest regrets are linked to indesision, and I can attest right now - no more! I am all of 67, in good health and wife too. Time for a double, time for some travel, why wait until later, the money isn't going to run out completely and the older one gets all you need is pills and memories anyway. Make memories now folks, you can never have enough. Delaying my Heym was a mistake, I needed the money, but I could have made a plan around it.
What delays did you accept, when a little resolve would have been in order? What is your foot stamp resolotion going forward?
Memories made are what keep your heart full as you grow older. Not making them with the ones you love because you thought you’d have time or more money later, is the biggest regret of the elderly and terminal. When I look at my photo memories even now, my one thought is I wish I could of done this with my best friend by my side. Money comes and goes, but memories, the people you want sharing them with you, you’ll talk about those in your final hours not the amount in your bank account.

What delays me is not money or time, but an unforeseeable set of political circumstances. I am a contractor who works in special aviation services, and my career has taken me to Kuwait, where I work and live as an expat. The money if great and the vacation days are 30+, but what wrecked my plans this year has everything to do with the internal politics of Kuwait. The government here chose to use the pandemic to cancel new visa's and close the airport indefinitely to expats. They are following in the footsteps of Saudi, by trying to force out the expats. Half my crew is stuck outside the country and have now for over a month, and in response the company has suspended vacation days until further notice. So here I am, in Kuwait, angry beyond all belief because a planned hunt got pushed back another year, all because of politics. The worse pandemic in my opinion.

I grew up with a little money and had lots of hunts in the U.S so by the time i started making real money i was already getting ready to travelling and more adventures as i have checked almost everything on my bucket list. Indecisiveness could be really dangerous but going out to get an unsatisfied experience has always been better than sitting around wishing if should or could do that. Life is too short for that.

@Chickenfarmers.
Mate if you have checked almost everything on your bucket list at your age I would get a BIGGER BUCKET and put more in it to do.
Never have an empty bucket If'n you do dig a hole lay in it and get someone to fill it in.
One thing I always wanted to do is design my own cartridge and write an article for a hunting magazine about it. My article was published in Australia and New Zealand when I was 50, I'm now almost 63 and have a lot to do yet the main one being passing on my love of hunting to my son and hunting with him for as long as i can.

Life passes by to quickly.
I tell younger people when they they say one day I will..............
I tell them one day will be here before you know it and you still won't have it done and regret it..
ONE DAY IS THE DAY YOU SAY IT. PLAN FOR IT AND MAKE IT A REALITY.
Bob.
“One day will be here before you know and you still won’t have done it and regret it”
That’s something we should all remember, whether it be about fulfilling a dream of going to Africa, telling someone how you feel or just enjoying that beer on the deck while watching our kids play catch.

Amen brother. I have found in my 63 years of living it is the simple things in life that give the most pleasure.
The innocent smile of a child, a certain song, the love of a good woman. I could go on but you know the story and can paint the picture.

Hey Bob, @Bob Nelson 35Whelen do you have a digital format of your published article?
A link or a back issue no for it?
I can text you my email if you can send it as photos.
You could find me on Facebook but you might see I'm not active there and I have more freind requests than friends as I don't generally open it. I use messenger with the family.
Failing all else photcopy the parchment you penned it on and we can use snail mail.

100 percent well done Matetsi. Although I never went that route how I love the African wilderness and the same feeling of completeness when there with just the wild.

Have fun and enjoy life.
