Does a black wildebeest make a good rug like the blue wildebeest? It appears people generally prefer the blue as I can’t find pictures or info online about black rugs.

Any thoughts or opinions?

Also, besides zebra and blue wildebeest can people tell me what other plains game hides make good and decently durable rugs?

Blue wildebeest with its short sleek hair and almost iridescent shifts of color is a far prettier rug than a black. I should add we use zebra and blue wildebeest as actual rugs. Assuming they were properly backed, they are quite durable. A backed reedbuck makes a great hide to drape over a chair.

I have a blue wildebeest that is nice and a black that is stored in the garage. Why not do a Giraffe;)

That is a great idea, and I've seen it used as a rug, and on furniture and looks great. Do it for those of us who can't have one. :ROFLMAO:

I would love to have a Giraffe rug, but Mrs. PARA45 said flat out no to my great idea. She is my biggest fan, and supporter of my hobby/addiction or whatever we want to call it, but she put her foot down on the Giraffe and she is not changing her mind.:cry:

My wife is exactly the same, she would rather shoot me than me shoot a giraffe! I have several flat skin rugs favorite is definitely the blue hildabeest , also have a kudu, blesbok on the floor and a mountain reedbuck draped over a chair.

Blue looks much better than black, especially with the brindles!

Hildabeest.....sound like the rug of a terrible woman.....

When in Namibia I took an African Wildcat .....pictures were posted at my Archery club ......my cat and a giraffe , taken by another member with her crossbow ...were removed because some people were appalled and this was at our club ..... so I think you better adhere to what the Misses says !

My prettiest- sable antelope
2nd prettiest- nyala
3rd prettiest- blue Wilde

Don’t have one but an oryx makes a beautiful rug.

I have a black wildebeest on my bedroom floor next to my bed.
The bright lustrous sheen looks magnificent and feels beautiful underfoot.
My PH had a black wildebeest on the floor of the lodge in the loungeroom that he said had been down for years and wears very well

I have a blue, blesbok, zebra, waterbuck, and many springbok. I like the blue the best.

This post triggered me...Black & Blue (reminded me of My face after some final arguments with my ex.) LOL Giraffe! 'Scored a nice, big, dark one in Zim nearly 20 yrs ago. Paid the $2,500 to ship it (and the massive skull) home, only to have a "reputable" tannery/taxidermist sit on it, cry "hair slippage" and I never got to see it again (they couldn't produce it to give it back. ?? ???) :( Only later did I watch the owner of Sivko Tanning in Canesteo NY shave down the rather thick giraffe skin on another hunter's prize (and she explained that there's a whole 'nother level of expertise required in dealing w/ 'em, elephant, rhino, etc.) I had planned for it to be the area rug in my office. Those skulls are heavy (much heavier than an elephant skull.) I think the blue w. has more contrast, and it's larger. What about the "white-brindled gnu??" Tanzanian/E. African wildebeest! Prob. even better. Post seriously reminded me that 'also got a nice blue wildebeest on the same day as the giraffe! Great memories...

Probably has to come down to personal preference being your trophy.

The Giraffe thing is interesting as people seem to be very sensitive about them. Personally I'm OK with taking them but my daughter asked me not to shoot a Giraffe when I announced my intentions of going on a safari.
It wasn't something I was considering any way and wasn't offered in my package but could have been a option for a price.

I may never take a Giraffe but they would make for some cool trophy items.

People often say the same and more regarding the taking of Zebra. Even some hunting friends said "You shot a Horse??" lol

Good Morning x84958
I have read your post about Jamy Traut and your hunt in Caprivi. I am planning such a hunt for 2026, Oct with Jamy.
Just a question , because I will combine Caprivi and Panorama for PG, is the daily rate the same the week long, I mean the one for Caprivi or when in Panorama it will be a PG rate ?
thank you and congrats for your story.
Best regards
Philippe from France

Hello Doug,
I am Philippe from France and plan to go hunting Caprivi in 2026, Oct.
I have read on AH you had some time in Vic Falls after hunting. May I ask you with whom you have planned / organized the Chobe NP tour and the different visits. (with my GF we will have 4 days and 3 nights there)
Thank in advance, I will appreciate your response.
Merci
Philippe
