They won't cycle 700gr hardcasts, which, to me, would be a large point of going rifle in a 500 S&W. Sectional density of .400.
I also don't know that they'd cycle the 600s, I can't quite remember my conversations with them, it has been years now, didn't think they would.
But they did note that their 22" version got over 4400 ft/lbs with the doubletap 400gr hardcast.
The sectional density on the "normal choice" 440s is only .251, my 4" revolver wouldn't stabilize the 460gr long flat nose so I am back using the 440s. I'd like a higher SD, but haven't had issues either.
Anyways, I'd ask them about COAL and see what it would actually cycle reliably, seems they built their own action because whatever other available was too long or too short, but theirs doesn't cycle the 700gr round and possibly others because it's too short... that's a miss to me.
Underwood makes a 500gr hardcast if they ever come back in stock, depending upon COAL, casting your own 530gr or so may still feed, give you good sectional density, allow you to play with powder and see just how much energy you can throw.
Big bullet, it'll have the sectional density the 45-70 will have and thus penetration is there to be had.
Seems like a decent enough carry gun for bear, I built a 458 lott personally, but my 500 revolver will still hang on my chest.
There also seems to be a great excuse to buy a double in 500 NE here for you.
