Big Bore Addiction Group

So I was at the local gun store and stumbled across what seems to be a good deal just want some oppinions first as I have no real use for the rifle it is a Winchester 458WM with a vortex scope all brand new never been fired just wondering what you guys would consider fair for it.

first some questions:

1. is it a push feed Winchester or a controlled round feed Winchester?
2. what model and power is the scope?
3. by new do you mean lightly used or actually new in the box?

the price could range from $800-$1400 depending on the answer to these questions.

If the rifle is a new FN/Winchester .458, they cost around $1395. The Vortex scope could be anywhere from $200 to around $2000, depending on model.

shuter, can't wait to see them pics (y)

$1395 is too much for a new Winchester unless your talking after tax and shipping. i got mine for $1100 which is pretty standard. you can get them new from Buds Gun Shop for $1195. but i agree the scope price could vary by alot depending on model.

i wouldnt pay more then $900 for a used Winchester in 458 WM. more then $900 and it becomes a better deal to buy one new for $1200. (i always prefer new)

I dont know how you would classify the gun it was a special order with the scope combo when the guy came to pick it up he said that he didn't want it so the gun has never left the store and I believe that the scope was around the $500 mark

hrm... no offense intended but that story sounds kinda funny. o_O

ive seen gun stores and pawn shops try to pass used guns off as "new" because they looked unused. are the scope, rifle, rings, and mounts still in their factory boxes or are they assembled together?

if the gun has a scope installed and is not in its factory box but still looks new then i would call it lightly used. as for whats its worth, that would depends on exactly what scope, rings, and mounts are on it. mind telling us exactly how much they want for it?

The store doesn't sell used guns and they want $1400 for it and no offense taken I have a 458lott so I don't really have a use for this rifle just was curious if this was a really good deal or just ok.

$1400 may or may not be a decent deal depending on the scope, rings, and mounts. if the gun is fitted with Leupold or Talley (or equal quality) quick detach rings/mounts and that scope is one of the 1-4x24 Viper's then $1400 is a pretty good deal assuming its all in excellent condition.

If this is a new Safari Express (FN-made), $1,200 out the door would be a very good price. The cheapest "DG" type scope that Vortex makes is the crossfire, which is $250 street price. Assuming standard/decent mounting system then, (another $50, minimum), we're at $1,500. If the scope is a viper, add another $200-$250. Bottom line: It's an excellent deal if the rifle is what I think it its. BUT, if the scope setup isn't desirable, I'd rather have a naked rifle for $1,200-$1,250 and add the optics I want; otherwise you're stuck trying to sell a scope.

just got back from the double rifle shoot in Alaska and boy what a hoot that was! first, I want to thank AkMike for inviting me and carting me, Velo Dog, and my friend Dennis around. id also like to thank every one who generously let me shoot their rifles!

I had a chance to shoot some outstanding double and single rifles in a wide variety of interesting chambering's. to name a few that I had a chance to shoot: 577/500 BPE, 577 BPE, 458 WM, 450 NE, 500 NE, 600 NE, 12 bore, 10 bore, 8 bore, and 4 bore. i did a TON of shooting and im sure my shoulder will hate me for the next couple of days but i loved every minute of it!

as promised here are some pictures of some of the guns at the shoot:

577 BPE and 500 BPE

4 bore shot shells and round ball cartridges along with some original 600 NE cartridges

some double rifles!

more double rifles

so come on matt what was your favourite, and you must have been itching to keep some of those big bullets? :D

i think my personal favorites at the shoot were the 577/500 BPE and the 500 NE. the guns over 50 cal were fun to shoot but i don't see myself packing them around Africa, they are just too heavy. the 4 bore rifles where probably the most fun to shoot but were so heavy that it was very difficult to keep the rifle on target. the 8 bore and 4 bore guns weren't loaded full tilt for safety purposes. however, some day id like to take a crack at shooting full power loads. if memory serves me right the 4 bore at this shoot was loaded with 1400gr round bullets being fired at 1500 fps.

here are some videos of me shooting some kickers:

me with a 8 bore:

me with a 4 bore (didn't realize i was wearing my safety glasses until i fired the rifle):

me with a 600 NE (easily the hardest kicker at this shoot!):

Those look like alot of fun to shoot matt!

Did the 600NE kick as bad as people say or is it tolerable? :)

I only fired the 600 NE twice but in my opinion with a bit of practice it wouldn't be too hard to get used to the recoil.

I was about to ask where the videos were!!!!

Now I've got to go downstairs and watch them as Nancy is still asleep and already has a sinus headache. if I watch them here I will know what that .600 hits like.... :A Banana Sad:

Ok, you can see the difference with the .600 for sure. Not only is there more obvious recoil, but the speed of recoil is obvious too.

Thanks for sharing Matt!

Good Morning x84958
I have read your post about Jamy Traut and your hunt in Caprivi. I am planning such a hunt for 2026, Oct with Jamy.
Just a question , because I will combine Caprivi and Panorama for PG, is the daily rate the same the week long, I mean the one for Caprivi or when in Panorama it will be a PG rate ?
thank you and congrats for your story.
Best regards
Philippe from France

Hello Doug,
I am Philippe from France and plan to go hunting Caprivi in 2026, Oct.
I have read on AH you had some time in Vic Falls after hunting. May I ask you with whom you have planned / organized the Chobe NP tour and the different visits. (with my GF we will have 4 days and 3 nights there)
Thank in advance, I will appreciate your response.
Merci
Philippe
