Bear in mind, SAA now charge for carrying firearms.
Not sure how much it is from the US but it is charged per leg of the journey.
When I contacted them to book my gun I was quoted $65 for each of my four flights giving me a total of $260 and asked to call back the following day to make sure it had been authorised and to pay.
When I rang back I spoke to someone else who quoted $65 for the legs between London and Johannesburg and $45 for the legs between Windhoek and Johannesburg.
So I saved a few $ simply by speaking to a different person. Make sure you check it out.
First for Adrian....I am aware of the charges but see it as a cost I'm willing to pay to take my own rifle. Just part of the budget.
For JGRaider....I do have to overnight in Windhoek but our hosts can arrange a nice inn for that and my wife and I want to spend a day sightseeing in Windhoek before heading to the hunting location. Just a matter of preference for this trip.
RBurg44--South Africa Air Flight 208 depart Dulles 5:40 pm and arrives OR Tambo 5:05 pm the next day. It has a short stop in either Senegal or Ghana. Then SAA flight 78 departs OR Tambo at 7:30 pm and arrive Windhoek at 9:35 PM.
@RBurg44 That late flight to Windhoek does not operate daily could be the issue. We’ve also seen SAA pull that from their schedule on occasion. Jen can check it out for you though. SAA posted gun handling fees are $100 per rifle on each int’l flight, $30 for in country flights and $60 for regional flights (Namibia, Zimbabwe, etc) in each direction of travel. Hope this helps!
