Some of both. They certainly track straighter than traditional round nose solids. There is also a good bit of slap from the flat nose (especially with cupped point solids). You can hear the crack on impact. Cupped point solids on my zebra last season lifted dust all the way down the back of the animal when the front shoulders were hit. It sounded like a baseball getting hit out of the ballpark.

Who has some experience shooting the cup point solids on game? I've been hearing reports of them creating wound channels of 2x bullet diameter, almost like an expanding solid. I'm curious in particular with Northfork's version of this but interested in anyone's experience with this style of...

I've heard lots of bullet strikes on flesh but this was a totally different sound. Myself and 2 PHs commented on it throughout the 2 week hunt and it happened 3x. Rest of the hunt was with softs in a 7x57.

No. The ranking for wound channel damage is Soft Nose is greatest, Cup Nose Solid then Metplat (flat nose) Solid. For penetration it is the exact opposite.

Woodleigh Hydro's and Nort Fork Cup Nose solids are the only Cup Nose Bullets I am aware of. Also the Metplate and Cup Nose solids are way less likely to wander off course inside the animal and less prone to deviation if you hit brush/sticks before hitting the animal.

A bloke that goes or use to go by the forum name of Michale from Oregon, if memory serves correctly has done a lot of testing in regards to different bullets and their performance. Worth reading if you can find his work. He may be on here, not sure.

Simply Curious the benefit of the flat over round tip. That's all I have, 1/2 off or came with.

But the order described still helps .. Woodleigh's FMJ, must have been successful @ some time?

Not saying the old round nose and pointed nose solids have not done the job but they are more prone to going off course due to circumstances that do not set the others off course. Most PH that I am aware of advise not to use solids on Buff, but those I know of who have used Hydros or Cup Nose seem to now use them on Buff.

@TOBY458 and I were discussing this some years ago. He has done lots of research on this am mentioned that the flat or cup nosed solids were superior to the round nose. After great results on elephant in two calibers I tend to think he is right!

Those Barnes performed well on that tuskless in the Omay. That follow-up shot went through the shoulder, traversed the whole animal, through the back leg and almost exited! We found it just under the skin.

I used a 525 grain CEB solid The PH and I Planned on frontal or side brain on many stalks
But the chest shot was all that was available at 25 ish yards. On a Wiley, alert old cow. And sneaking on cornflakes.

Unbelievably, She tipped over with the heart shot
We added insurance shots. But they weren’t needed. Of course the solid went completely through the chest
