Best double rifle for the money $$

I have two Merkel doubles. One in 9.3x74R, and one in 470NE. Both have been great rifles and well regulated. They also both come to the shoulder quickly. No issues with either, and I would definitely buy another.

There are many "good enough" doubles.

Assuming fit and proper caliber for the task I like the way some hold value better than others...

I currently have a Krieghoff Classic Big Five in 450/400 3". It has upgraded wood, and is engraved with a lion and an elephant. I always wanted a double rifle and this one was pretty and in a good calibre so it came home with me. The calibre is relatively easy to shoot as I also have a Rigby in 416 which I find quite a handful. As for new rifles, I like both the Krieghoff and the Verney Carron. Another maker to consider is Merkel if the right chambering and price came up. If you can afford it, the new Heym 89 is quite a gun.

Ihave several Chapuis one with near 500 water buffalos and continued use in the swamps

For the money:
The best English period double rifles I have found for the money have been sold by angry, cheated on wives and divorcees.
Second to that would be estate sales where the descendants of deceased hunters don't know what something is worth. Little kids at garage sales will helpfully bring out some of ole dad's stuff sometimes, as well. Better to have candy to barter along with some cashin small denominations.
I should mention Julio, who sells out of his pickup from under the bridge over the junction of I 75 and I 45 who always has good deals he has "picked up" curiously right after he has done lawn care or handyman repairs in the better sections of Highland Park.
Can't be choosy, though--have to take what they could get....

Wait, this is not the humor section, is it?.....never mind......

Do not underestimate how it fits you. A great deal on a rifle that you can’t shoot well because of poor fit is a terrible deal no matter how affordable it is.

This is precisely why I’m taking my wife to go see JJ in a couple of weeks… to have her double fitted exactly to her…

She’s 5’3”.. everything is poorly fitted to her from the factory… I generally don’t mind taking our “common” rifles and shotguns to a local gunsmith (he’s actually very good) to have her guns fitted… but with the value of a double, and the associated recoil of a big bore… this one will be done absolutely right..

I just purchased my first double...yet to get my hands on it, the discontinued Chapuis Ugex in 9.3x74R, you may be able to pick one up at a reasonable price as they are discounting them. Its the X 4 model only now.

Sir, I think I have been writing to you about the purchase of the HK 639 rifle under an email "Tt Jake." If this is you, then I am truly interested. I am just trying to verify identify. Tt Jake is asking for a cash transaction. No disrespect intended, Just trying to verify who I am talking to. Thank you. Respectfully. Dan

Hey my friend, I am returning to SA for a Cape Buffalo hunt in June 26. My outfitter has suggested Highveld but I have read some poor reports. Wondering how satisfied you were with your mounts from them? Thanks in advance.
Finally back to somewhat normal I missed reading the messages and posts
