Love to know what everyone else thinks but... I have hunted a lot, globally, and I am not into gimmick calibers, wildcats, and I am not a fan of shooting everything on the planet with a 6.5 Needmoor... in all of my hunting experience I found that I could take just about everything in terms of plains game with a .300 Winchester Magnum.
My resume includes taking over 300 big game animals with the .300 Winchester Magnum and a 180 Gr Barnes TTSX bullet... Including some of Alaska's biggest bears.
And in Africa I was incredibly impressed with how my combination of rifle and ammo worked... The reasons I liked this caliber/bullet the best:

#1. The 180 Gr Barnes bullets don't damage trophies... in Africa all of the plains game are relatively thin skinned animals compared to bears. And lets face it, those hunts are trophy collection trips and the trophies and taxidermy are important. And the guys who shot animals with more frangible bullets had big holes in their hides. Some capes were ruined. I had no ruined capes, those Barnes bullets don't fragment, expand to 3x diameter inside 3-4" of soft tissue, and exit with a clean hole. I liked this very much... plus the animals died quickly.

#2. With bigger animals that I wanted to anchor, I was able to break one, if not both shoulders, if needed. The 100% weight retention on almost every bullet I have ever fired is incredibly consistent, when I can recover a bullet. And animals dropped when both shoulders were pinned.

#3. And they are damn accurate. I have shot this caliber/bullet a lot... most of our .300 Win Mag rifle packages go out with these bullets in the rifle (not all, but a lot) and these are 1/2 minute rifles. Depending on barrel length, etc... the round goes out an average muzzle velocity of between 2925-3000 fps, they generate a good amount of energy.

I know not everyone will agree... but I wanted to give my two cents, and want to hear what everyone else likes to shoot for plains game animals in Africa.

I think that’s a 300 win mag for me. I’m happy with most any 180 gr bonded bullet or Barnes bullet. I will not shoot a non-bonded bullet if I have any other options. I’ve used swift A frames, Nosler accubonds, and Barnes. I’ve only felt under gunned on my largest eland bull.

No Barnes experience on plains game (they make a killer muzzleloader bullet tho!). In my experience, 300 WM for sure with 180 grain Swift Scirocco II bullets. They seem to be a bit harder than Accubonds and punch a hole clean through plains game of various sizes from duiker to zebra (about maxed out/pancaked on zebra tho). I like 180 gr Accubonds on white tail up to elk a bit better in NA (I know this wasn’t the OP’s question) because I find them to leave a better blood trail (slightly more frangible than Sciroccos?). YMMV.

Agree with you on 300 Win Mag and 180 grain Barnes TSX, doesn’t get much better. I would also add the 200 grain TBBC and 200 grain SAF.

Most here probably won’t remember but the best performing African plains game bullet I have used from a 300 Win Mag was the old 180 Winchester Failsafe, no longer made for many years now, too expensive to produce.

Devastating on everything from springbok to eland from my mid 90’s safari. My PH Dion Cilliers was so impressed with the performance he felt my 300 Win Mag with 180 grain Failsafes would work fine on Cape buffalo.

I've done most of my damage on plains game with an ancient Mk V .300 Weatherby shooting 180gr TTSX. It has worked perfectly well on stuff from steenbok to eland. The custom rig I had built a few years back is in .300 Win. I'd be content with either.

300 Weatherby is my go to, but I wouldn’t mind stepping up to a 340 Weatherby. Bonded bullets or monometal for either.

I have also used a 416 Remington as my all-around cartridge, but it’s a bit heavy for most plains game. The Nosler Partition works well for plains game in something that heavy.

I have hunted just over 500 big games in Africa, because I was lucky to get great deals for culling/management hunting, and with many calibers, from .223 Remington up to .470 Nitro express.

But I would say my first choice for plains game will be the same than yours. I really like the .300 Winchester magnum, however I have never had the opportunity to hunt with lead-free bullets.
I tried some little load developments with Barnes TTSX 165 and 180 gr, but without any success yet.
I have hunted with several bullets, but my favourites remain Nosler Accubond 180 gr, Swift Scirocco II 180 gr and Nosler Partition 180 & 220 gr.

My second choice will be the .338 Winchester magnum with a good 225 or 250 gr bullets. But If I have to hunt only in a place with thick bush, I'll stick with the good old .375 H&H magnum.

Ditto on 300 winmag. I've taken a couple of dozen plains game animals, from stenbock to eland with the 300 winmag, using 200gr Federal TBBC or Nosler Partition.

Not a ton of experience on my end, just one trip. I'll say the 300WM, emphatically. With Barnes TTSX I had great results. It works in close, it works mid-range, and it definitely works if you get a longer shot as well.

7x57mm Mauser with 170-175Gr bullets (currently I’m using Prvi Partizan 173Gr soft points)

If I were to buy a new rifle for all of my plains game hunting purposes, then I would hands down opt for a Ruger Model 77 Hawkeye Hunter chambered in .300 Winchester Magnum. Loaded with 200Gr Nosler Partition Trophy Grade cartridge, it would be excellent for all of my plains game hunting purposes. As well as leopard (or even lion) on bait (where legal, of course).

I agree as long as there’s not DG in the area. If there is I step it up to nine pt three or three seventy five.

I agree with you. I hunted a couple hundred animals in Africa with a 7x57 & 308 when I was young. Although they got the job done I always felt like I needed more punching power on distance shots. Now I own a 300WM and it’s just so much more superior/versatile than my other calibers for PG.

My neighbor has a 30-06 and has shot 2000+ PG animals with it so that can be a great contender since he uses steel military rounds on smaller PG animals to save on ammo costs.

Obviously the answers depend on what part of the world you live in. -and none of us can pick just one gun!
I’m a big fan of the .300 wm and 180 gr bullets although I have several favorites.
Since many places are banning lead bullet use, I believe the ttsx and other mono’s will continue to grow in popularity.

For my money at 300 yards or less I'll take the 35 Whelen with a 225 grn TTSX. My son would opt for the 300WM and the 200 grn Terminal Accent.

Lifes to short to do it with only one....

7x57mmm or 7x57R small to medium PG bushveld
9.3x62mm or 9.3x74R or 375H&H medium to large plains game
6.5x57mmm or 6.5x57R small game open areas
7x64mm Brenneke or 7x65R for small to medium game in open areas and in particular 7x65R for mountain areasin a Kipplauf
300 H&H medium to large game in open areas

If pg hunting with buff, lion and elephant in the area 9.3 or 375

I honestly think that a .30-06 or a non-magnum 7mm, both with good, heavy-for-caliber bullets would be hard to beat for all-around use on African plains game. Ditto for a cartridge like the 8x57mm. I don't see a need for the increased pyrotechnics of a magnum caliber (I know, I hunt with a .375 H&H Flanged, so the "do as I say, not as I do" law applies here).

This dovetails with my theory that all useful sporting cartridges had been created and perfected by 1930. Prove me wrong.
