An article about this recently appeared in a Flemish hunting magazine, based on a survey. The following quote gives the essence:

YouGov's independent sample survey of more than 7,000 Europeans from five countries (Italy, Denmark, Poland, Spain and Germany) shows that a majority of EU citizens accept hunting. Only 23% disagree with keeping a memento, a practice often called “trophy hunting”, while 77% agree or are neutral towards this practice"

Didn't the EU parliament drop their own proposed ban a few years ago after hearing from delegations from some southern African countries?...
My PH was quite vocal about "other countries" coming up with quotas and rules for hunting. I totally agree with him. Is it "colonialism" that WE know whats best for you?

Perfect demonstration of the misappropriation of photos.
Theft.

With any luck they will ALL be getting a hefty bill for the use of it.

This is utter nonsense did anyone actually had a say on it that is on the ground?
Always the people who are dressed in suits and do nothing except to stab each other in the back (my very friendly interpretation of what I think of politicians)

And what does Africa's wildlife actually have to do with EUROPE and politics?????
Billiard balls and piano keys are not made from Ivory anymore.

VertigoBE, I still need to register to vote this year on the Belgian elections please let me know who to vote for that is pro gun and hunting if any?

It is very sad to see the world going so soft and trying to live in a bubble.

This is the usual asshattery from people whose knowledge is based on Disney instead of facts.
As far as voting goes, none of the political parties are truly very active pushing forward a pro-hunting stance. For the Flemish (me) there are three parties a bit less anti-hunting:

- the Vlaams Belang (often called extreme right, but more a nationalist party in reality, a bit like Front National in France)
- CD&V (the traditional center Christian party who most of the farmers vote for too)
- OpenVLD (centre right, liberal party, pro-business)

However all of them concede that hunting is not a mayor attention point in their programs, the strongest pro stance is probably Vlaams Belang. They however have the extreme right connotation. CD&V was also willing to throw farmers under the bus, while OpenVLD is like a prostitute, willing to compromise on all their values, as long as they get a seat at the table. So no good choices unfortunately. And while some might be pro-hunting in Belgium, none of them are pro import of trophies. They are all quick to concede on this to attract more voters. Basically all of them want to play nice with the EU institutions, in order to get cushy jobs there.

And as you can read in the article, the proposal was adopted unanimously. So it is only waiting now for it to become law. One can only hope that CITES importation requests that had a pre-approval would still be honoured after it takes effect. I'll be honest, these past few days I have not been feeling the most upbeat about all of this and it is casting a shadow over my joy for the birth of our second child.

Especially as the import ban is not singling out one or two species, but rather a blanket ban. Looks like it is time to think about moving.

we are in the world top for elections with only bad choices. it looks like that anyway. there are probably worse situations. it will be a harm reduction approach.

remain optimistic. we are also champions in finding methods to circumvent the legislation. it may be so in this case too

Let's hope you are right

"In a momentous triumph for wildlife conservation and animal welfare,"

What a joke, what do these politicians know about conservation. Maybe those on the ground, dealing with poaching, and truly fighting for the conservation of those animals should be the ones to ask about conservation. Not a politician who has never been outside the comfort zone of their mansions.

I absolutely know that the duh masses of the world think trophy hunting is where you shoot an animal, cut its head off for your wall, and leave the rest in the field. We all know this isn't the case. If it were, Africa's vulture species wouldn't all be on the threatened list. Those that profit off of the duh masses that believe that know the truth but if they acknowledge that truth, their gravy train (at the expense of others) would be over and they may actually have to start working for a living.

So the Belgians and the British stopped colonizing the Congo and South/East Africa on paper. Yet, they’re still trying to make decisions to what the Africans (and Asians, for that matter) do with their wildlife ?

Colonialist attitudes are still very rampant in Europe, it seems. It’s just that this time they come under the pretense of “Wildlife Conservation“.

As a citizen of a former European (British) colony, I’m genuinely disgusted that even 77 years after our so-called “independence“… Europeans still think that they’re entitled to make decisions as to what goes on in our countries. It’s actually very sickening.

I guarantee you. None of the European politicians who impose these “Trophy Bans” could ever tell the ass-end of an “Endangered species” from the front end.

Well, scratch Belgium off of my list of places that I'd like to live, not that it was ever even on my list.

Hi Lance, Hope you well. I collect Mauser rifles and they are very much part of my cultural history in Africa. Would you consider selling the rifle now a year on ? I'd like to place it in my collection of Mauser rifles. Many thx

I saw where you hunted elephant with backcountry safaris in Zimbabwe.
Was looking to book an elephant hunt and wanted to know how your hunt went
and if you would recommend them.

Thanks
