Baikal double

When it locks the action do you have to put pressure on it like your closing it again to free it up or is it just stiff to open?

Very stiff to open have to put across my knees and press really hard.

Right now the load I'm running is my 405g cast bullets over 50g imr4064 and it seems to like it , I'm going to try a few different powders and maybe some 500gr bullets just to experiment with it but I'll have to watch the locking lugs and see how they hold up , I wonder why they didn't incorporate more of a third locking member but that would've probably driven the costs up and up and if they were going for a working mans rifle I guess that would make since why no crossbolt or dallshead etc....

With the Baikals the hard opening with the heavy slugs could be the firing pins sticking in the primers a little to, some times they need reshaping & the 180gr would or could up the pressure depends on the chamber & throating/free bore ?

I doubt more pressure will effect your under lugs, these are a very strong action & the pressure isn't very high, normally the recoil will stop you before any thing else they are just too light & if any thing with a lot of very high pressure shooting could become a little loose before its time, there is no need to do this as the 45/70 will do all you ask at a lower level, adding power will do little if you are hunting animals you should be hunting with a 45/70, it is not a long range rifle/caliber any way !

I have done a lot of Big game hunting with the 45/70 in the old days as this was all we could get that was a large caliber & in the very early days was the only really large caliber we could use legally in the NT of Australia with out special permits .

So I shot lots of Buffalo & Bantang with them with out problem (well once when shooting subsonic & being over confident) & this is in the days before wonder bullets & a lot with just lead bullets !

Huge loads were shot out of H&R single shots with the old cast iron action, if a rifle was going to come loose or blow these would have blown them !

Bob I have one in 30-06 if I use factory 180 gr ammo it will lock the action , but is ok with 150 gr loads. Don’t know why it would do this as you would thinks the pressure would be the same

I am late to this party, but a 405gr .459 diameter bullet at about 1500fps ( that’s what the Lyman 50th edition suggests the velocity would be with 50gr IMR4064) will take a LOT of game. By the way this is not a max load in the Lyman manual.
There were a lot of Bison taken with the .45-70 405gr & 500gr bullets & black powder loadings with the 405gr bullet probably never exceeded 1300fps & the 500gr probably never got above 1200fps.
I am a fan of the .45-70!

Ya I've been shooting this one and the regulation of barrels at first I thought kinda cheesy of rolling the dial has more than impressed me .... getting it to print next to touching bullets @ 50yrds in the factory irons is more than adequate for our use , and it didn't take making up any crazy load or to specific , I just juiced up one of my Marlin loads and she dialed right in , it does make me dream of a "fine double" one day but then I think of my type of budget and hunting style and think well I'm still the duck hunter that wields a rem 870 and my go to rifle is a marlin lever gun so the baikal really just fits , shoots good and puts a smile on the ol mans face so it'll do for now

I Had one of these in 45-70, lets just say with 405gr running at 2000fps the recoil is, umm how shall I put it, awakening? never had such a bruised shoulder after only 20 shot, had to give up and rething the reloads. mine struggled to regulate, the elevation was off by about 6 inches. put a skinner sight on, but before I could use it someone decided they wanted it so I moved it on and replaced it with a little Fausti SxS 45-70. Personally wouldn't bother with it unless you could fire it and see what the barrels are doing. If the elevation is good and the regulation sideways could work, restocking it is a must as it is tiny!

I think it's a roll of the dice if you get a good one or bad one , I've heard just as much bad if not more than good actually but I went into it thinking It was going to be a project i guess i just got lucky on mine probably kicked like a mule to the previous owner but I'm so used to being beaten I guess my shoulder has no feeling left lol

The bakail was my first double, it shot well and taught me a fair bit about reloading for doubles. I considered going to a 45/90-45/120 and layed the reamer along side the mono block and you were into the very thin barrel. So that idea went into the scrap bin. As already mentioned it is the bolt thrust that you have to be concerned with thus the 28KPSI max. As many know I have tested the limits of what can be done SAFELY with the 9.3x62. I would HIGHLY recommend not shooting Marlin level pressures in your Bakail. Or to put is this way if you are shooting marlin level and higher and we are at the same range please go to the opposite end of the range. The 45/70 with 28KPSI level loads will kill anything you have in Florida. If you want 450NE level performance save till you have the $$$ and buy one.

The Bakail is a fun double to shoot, ugly, and clunky but darn they shoot well.

I probably misstated it my post but I'm not running marlin or modern level loads , my chrono was stating 1600ish fps on my 50g loads from what I read those were under the 28kpsi limit..... I was just meaning the loads I was using In my marlin , so my cast loads are nothing like my nosler or full grown powder charges

Sounds good. I misunderstood what you were shooting. I have been playing with the 45/70 in everything from a original trapdoor to a ruger#1 over the years and was always worried I would shoot the wrong ammo in rifle designed for less pressures. I now only have a Marlin so that simplifies my worries.

I have owned and shot several doubles in 45/70 over the years (Bakail, Sabbatti, Siace, and Rizzini) and that have all been great to shoot. Some are more refined (Siace and Rizzini) and some not so refined (Bakail and Sabbatti). The Bakail is just a fun platform.

Hi Kevin . Not so long ago Savuti Arms was selling Baikal doubles , if memory serves me well they were going for about R19 000 . Don't know if they still have any in stock .

I had a Rem Baikal in .45-70 and shot the heck out of it for a time. It shot well enough. I replace the factory pad with a softer one though.
The regulation system works more or less but it does seem cheesy as another posted. I sold mine after a year or so I think.
Hard to find now.

I got lucky this past weekend , I stopped in a pawn shop and seen this in a glass case and asked if it was a 410 , he said it was a double rifle in 30:06 , I grabbed it !!!!!!!
