Back to traditional bows

Jim Babcock of Big Jim Bow Company (Google search) builds this bow in one piece then literally cuts it in half. It is a tang set-up so to speak with a carbon wrapped sleeve. Black Widow Bows and Cari-Bows of Canada also use this system. Jim sells all the materials necessary to build the sleeve yourself, on his website. He also does a set by step video (free) that shows the process in detail. The handle is a beaver tail wrap and it is impossible to tell it's a 2pc. He builds two models, the Thunderchild pictured above in 54, 56, and 58 inch. He also builds a more traditional longbow with a bit less reflex/deflex called a Buffalo Bow in 60, 62, 64, and 66 inches.

Hope this helps

Like I said before, I have never seen a set-up like this, and after the GOOGLE search, I am glad i looked at it. Very neat concept. The bow itself is beautiful, and to have the break down option, is a major plus.

Here is a link that shows how the take down is made. I hope this does not violate any rules if so please remove it???

Awesome bow and an awesome site. Never have I seen this form of a break down bow, Beautiful bow as well.

35bore I also toy with archery taditional is fun. Traditional eqipment allows you to just shoot and not be a catapult mechanic.

Yes, it's been a lot of fun. As I posted before, been 19 or so years ago. I guess I just missed it enough to start back up. Hard to explain, but, I'm glad I switched back. I understand and except the limitations, and I am alright with that. I am sure in time I will practice at longer ranges and as long as the energy is there, i might hunt at longer ranges with it.

Hmmmmm ..... maybe bow porn would have sounded better but in this economy??? maybe I'll pass the suggestion along to him :)

Maybe not???

Jim's got some eye candy for sure.... That sounded gay as hell, ,,, or made Jim sound like a pimp. Anyway, very nice bows....

Ha!

It's awesome to hear you are getting comfortable with your bow and new arrows. Don't get frustrated. Some days with a trad bow are great and you hit where you are looking. Others you can't hit a barn. Keep at it and keep it fun. Start shooting from 10-14 yards and then build confidence. You won't be shooting over 30 with a trad bow much and 20-24 is my self imposed limit. Have fun!

TOM,

Again thanks for the input, the carbons worked great. Aside from my original post I think I will hang onto the recurve and the long bow for a while. To late I started at 20 yrds and I am getting comfortable at that range, I will post this years Whitetail (hopefully) with one or the other....

That's great, truly enjoy hunting with the trad bow. It definitely takes more commitment than a compound. Be sure to tune your arrows to the bow. Play with some heavy broadheads. I was shooting 300 grains on a 55/75 goldtip and 200 grain from a 35/55 . I had great penetration from that combo from a 55 lbs bow. good luck

I am taking the Bear Montana out tomorrow morning, heads are sharpened and I feel more comfortable with the long bow than the recurve (would have thought just the opposite). Anyway, been practicing a lot a 20 yards and now even my "off" shots are still within the 6inches of center, so I bought my tags today (wasn't going to buy archery tags until I was ready/comfortable), (so now I'm ready) and headed out in the morn. I wish all of guys a great season.

Go get em' buddy. Have fun with your new toy.

Quick update,,, I wasn't going to post this until it happened/shipped. I made the plunge, and saved for a Black widow. It's a recurve at 57# @30inches. The SA2 model in grey bark. Although I haven't had much luck deer hunting (in deer huntings defense, we were busy working the last 2 years) but will be taking it with me this deer season, and then again to Zambia to hunt with Mikey....Bow arrives (scheduled to arrive) next week....

Congrats on the purchase!

Congrats with a great bow.
I am seriously thinking about starting to shoot a recurve again myself and I have been looking at a Black Widow take-down.
If I decide to order one, I need to talk with them about my draw length as I really need a 31.5 -32" draw recurve.

Traditional bows are effective hunting weapons. I took my recurve to Africa and harvested kudu, waterbuck, blue wildabeest, blesbok and warthog and am hoping to add a couple more animals on my trip to Limpopo this Aug.with it.

2,822fps, ES 8.2
This compares favorably to 7 Rem Mag. with less powder & recoil.
