Is there someone else who likes to hunt baboons ?
It might be a tricky subject because I met people who refused to shoot them, because they look like to humans, while I met others who absolutely hate them, and even more some farmers living close by. Baboons are crop raiders, goat killers and destroy everything in farms if they have the opportunity, so they don't have a lot of friends in Africa.

I don't like the animal itself but they are great fun to hunt for sure.

In private properties where this no quota, and with farmers shooting them when the opportunity arise, it might be a real big challenge to bag a baboon. I keep in mind the famous Alexander Lake's quote about them :
"If a man wants to test his hunting ability I suggest that he tries chacma baboons. No animal, not even the African buffalo, ever led me such a futile chase as did those grey rascals. To this day I'm not sure that I have more brains than a baboon."

A long time ago, I walked more than 15 km during a day in the thick bush with two incredible trackers behind a group of baboons. These animals were incredible smart and had an awesome eyesight. Everytime my tracker spotted them, they ran away but at the end of the day, the group finished to split and the baboons were as tired as we were because of the heat. At the end, I had the opportunity to shoot a big male in a tree pretty far, and this was definitely a great memory for my first baboon.

Later, I chased them again and I also shot baboons when the opportunity arise, sometimes very far.
A big baboon is an impressive trophy and usually the shooting fee is very small, and it's even free with some outfitters if you don't keep the trophy.

So far, I had the opportunity to shoot a good number of north-western chacma baboons across Namibia, but also 2 grey-footed chacma baboon in the Caprivi strip. In that place, because there is a small quota, they are not as wary as their cousins from the south, but they are definitely not stupid.

I don't know if it's common, but I saw several workers/trackers who absolutely loved to see a dead baboon, more than any other animals. They gave me their cell phone, and asked me to take pictures of them posing with baboons. I used to give them my rifle for the photo and they were extremely happy to hold it for such memory. I'm sure some bragged that they had killed the baboons themselves.

I have killed most of my baboons with my .300 Winchester magnum but I also killed a couple of them with the .30-06, the .338 Lapua magnum and the 6.5 Creedmoor.
They can be extremely tough, and I saw a crossed Labrador wounded to the leg by a baboon that was wounded just before. But fortunately the dog survived.

One of my PH had a crossed boerbull who killed several wounded baboons, but it also carried a lot of scars from its altercations with them. However, I didn't have the opportunity to see that dog in action.

Here are some photos :

My lone baboon if part of this hunt:

Excerp from the report;

We loaded the impala (from the monring) and took them to the @Tally-Ho HUNTING SAFARIS main camp to the skinner. There, we saw a large baboon sneaking from water to a hiding spot and back again. Rudi informed me that he had shot at this one several times, which continued to elude his rifle. Rudi, my brother in law "M", and me snuck up to a complicated shooting position about 60 meters from old big and ugly. I had to stand on my tip toes resting my elbows on the floor of the veranda normally used to view the game. Okay, they don’t usually shoot game in from the veranda, but big and ugly was not game, just vermin.

Lining up a shot through the vertical railing on the other side of the veranda, and through a game wire fence about halfway there, with 4” by 6” openings, I waited for exposed baboon. Big and ugly kept his body behind the water container. He did however make the mistake of raising his head. Boom! My first baboon! Guess who also wanted a photo of himself with this trophy? Someday, M will be a hunter…

I shot the baboon with my custom Pre-64 Model 70 by Jim Kobe in .375 H&H.

4 safaris I am trying to get them without success!
I always have priorities. Kudu, zebra, etc Baboons are around. And when I complete priorities, then I have a day or two to chase baboons, I have no luck!

But baboon is getting higher and higher on my priorities list. Next time, maybe!

Yes I do to, would like to collect the lot but it would be out of my price range.

Hope to add the Guinea Baboon soon but when I read up on them they are one of the nice guys of the Baboon clan, so I will only be shooting the one if I get a chance.

My little hunting Dachshund (I know just how it worked out) was bitten almost into by a Big Dog Baboon, when he recovered we went out & shot a LOT of Baboon together, great little dog- gone now !

I have never killed a baboon but I hear they are a nasty animal. Most farmer sure like you kill them. My son killed 3 baboons one time with his bow. They came into his bush pig bait at sunrise, he killed one and the two other ran off, then came back as there was no "bang" from the bow, he killed the other two as well. They are an ugly animal as far as I am concerned. The blacks have strong feelings about them too.

I hear you. It took me a few tries to have the right opportunity. I have taken them in Namibia, Zimbabwe, and RSA. Recently Fred Burchell and I sat in a blind over oranges and lemons to wait them out. What fun that was! I especially liked watching a Kudu cow eat oranges. That is a sight!

I have never taken one properly in the field. They are really observant and hard to trick unless you are in a blind and not moving. I believe they can see camo patterns and you don't have to be moving for them to pick you out. I have sniped them from a distance but never gotten a 2nd shot, even with a suppressor. They do know what a rifle is and will scatter if you pick one up.

It is interesting to feed them to the crocs...

last hunt the PH showed me the damage they can do and he had to wrap his game cameras with barbed wire to protect them. had no luck last time so will try again in 38 days but wife said do not have one sent home! would be a cool euro and I have one spot on the wall for him

Thinned 2 troops in Namibia, a dozen including a big male. Had a good elevated set ups with the terrain near water holes both times and I set extra rounds out so I could single reload pretty fast. 30 to 200yds or so, some would tree at the first shot but had to be quick at finding a target. Got a double with one shot when 2 were together. PH took a few also; they had crops there and heavily discouraged having baboons around. No fees, and instructed to shoot as many as I could. One troop was pretty big 40+ animals and they spread out making enough chaos to shoot several at one go.

Earlier in that trip took another male in South Africa, but had to take a head shot and only have the canine teeth. The skulls make for impressive displays and more folks comment on them then anything else I have except maybe the warthog euros.

One morning in Zimbabwe I shot 3 males out of 3 troops and another guy in camp came along and he took a big male out of a fourth group. By 10 am we were all done.

The PH at one point turned to me and said, “I dont get it? It’s like they want to die.” That safari was magic; every time the PH made a plan on what to hunt; by the end of that day we were done.

I saw you were looking for some Swift A-Frames for your 9.3. I just bought a bulk supply of them in the 285g. version. If Toby's are gone, I could let 100 go for $200 shipped you are interested.
Thanks,
Gary
