B&C Limits tech use

On our farms in PA, if we received a text or e-mail photo (via realtime cam) the instant a big buck (or 850 lb bear) showed up at location x, we could get to that location (or a shooting position to cover that location) within 1-5 min of receipt. It "ain't" right. ;) But, for all the young, potential big bucks (and does carrying same) that get whacked via the same means, it's "ok." LOL "Why they call it Hunting, NOT Shooting. -Unk.
Can you teach me your ways? I think you are being sarcastic. I live in NW PA. I wouldn’t know how to use a cell phone trail camera to get into position on a whitetail buck. I’m glad we don’t have the ability. The option would have been quite tempting on this buck though (time is actually just before 7 am)

So I'm good with my swaro range finding binos and dial scope. Put those two together and then they are upset about it. To each his own. Lots of posturing here.

Looks like a decoy deer to me? LOL

I just read the Colorado DOW rules on game cameras. "Live action" game cameras are banned, but cameras that "record" visual data and store data for later use are legal.

kinda hard to see in this pic, but this fella has split G2s. we've been hunting him for 2 years. and by the looks of things, he has progeny.

Sorry for being too subtle.

I meant the members that thrive on the attention they get for shooting the biggest or best, or most, or most dangerous, etc. animal .

I keep some of my "trophies" for the memories. Not to win a prize.

I know a few people that are quite excited about shooting every type of wild turkey, pig, duck, goose, bison/buffalo, elk, deer, sheep, etc.

To each his own, I reckon.
I agree that hunting is or should not be a competition where you win a prize for killing a big one.
But, if you did, or have already, manage to put a monster of a trophy on the deck….would you not get it scored and entered the head into the trophy book?

You can use your Swaro range finder on the golf course to get the distance and pick the right club for the distance. Ban that technology in a Major Championship event (and maybe all of Pro Tour golf?) and make golfers/caddies use charted information separately gathered instead, just like a hunter has to use a separate range finder from scope. No one is upset by having rules for top tier golf, but there's a problem with setting rules for top level hunting?

I have and did not score it or turn it in to B&C. One time a guide reported my pronghorn head (with Pix) to TPWD and that put me on a list for that year and they sent me a certificate. I do have a shoulder mount of that buck in my living room and it is a beauty.

I hunted with an outfitter in Limpopo who had more than one really high score head on his wall, but none of them had been scored by anyone but himself. They were there for his pleasure and the pleasure of his guests and clients. Just a matter of perspective.

R8, I just remembered that many years ago a local Dallas sporting goods store ran a big buck contest with rifles as prizes. I won first prize that year which was a Winchester 3030. Since I hunted with a 1953 M70 in .308 , I swapped the 3030 for a Ruger 77 .243 for my wife and kids to shoot. That was before I began shooting lever guns.

Fair enough (y) I've only ever had one trophy scored and that is the BG caribou in my avatar. He made the B&C all time record book. None of my other heads, including a Dall ram, have ever been scored. Couldn't care less.... but I will admit that I have run a tape over some of my thar and chamois heads just to get an idea.

And...even though I don't consider myself a trophy hunter ... I do get sort of a kick out of seeing my name and head in the B&C record book.

“But Spring, at the Boone and Crockett Club, says that many of the club’s stances on ethical behavior have less to do with getting a shot at an animal than they do with ensuring that the non-hunting public doesn’t sour on hunting.”

I don’t have a problem with hunters discussing what is ethical to the sport as a community but I believe catering to those who don’t hunt is a losing strategy. There are a lot of people who are opposed to any kind of hunting, for any reason.

Let's see a photo of your pronghorn. I've yet to shoot a really nice one, but I did miss one once that would have been a nice trophy. I keep on truckin though.

Not a chance. IMO the record books and award systems incent poor behavior in our sport. I will not participate.

Saw a program just last night where a hunter put up real time trail cams on six guzzlers or man-made water holes on national parklands to monitor bighorn sheep. On the day of his hunt he was alerted to a big one at a particular guzzler so he walked there and shot it. Do you think he might have had an unfair advantage over those that truly hunted using spot and stalk methods? Knowing every square inch of thousands of PA acres (ancestral farm properties and lifelong friend neighbors) I could fairly easily do the same thing knowing the topography distances involved cover to sneak through wind direction etc. Just find a good rest a shooting Lane absent branches and I'll more likely than not take that deer from whatever reasonable distance necessary. And pertaining to other comments elsewhere, I've not seen many golf matches that result in The taking of a life, though I'm quite sure there are other fine websites for that sort of thing. The closest we could get to that is having access to tiger woods' dash cam and waiting to be alerted to the inevitable!

Remember the rifles set up on lead sleds in blinds or facing a trail awhile back, and the "hunter" would fire them at game remotely from the comfort of his living room via a cell phone or computer? I think every state has since banned that practice. How damn lazy have some people gotten!
Yes that's exactly what came to mind but I thought it was okay for people that were handicapped severely handicapped and that's the example they made of why it should be allowed as weird as it was!

CEH,
Shot this one 2 years ago and he was about the same size as my first on at 14+ inches. with added extra forks that ran up the score. I have a couple other ones with horns on boards and all the others are in a 5 gallon bucket with deer antlers.(which I no longer mount either) . All my Pronghorns have been shot in the Texas Panhandle or NE New Mexico, or SE Colorado. That hunk of prairie is filled with Pronghorn. The only truly "big "ones were one in Texas and another in New Mexico and I missed one running for a canyon and was not able to get a shot at the other. I have shot them as close as 10 yards (good campfire story) and as far away as 235 yards.

Nice pronghorn crs! Congrats!

Personally, I agree with their decision, and think it could have come sooner and possibly even included more.

Support this or not, I can’t see a way where it is remotely enforceable. All one has to do is sign the waiver.

I can bet that plenty of animals have been entered in the past that have violated the clubs policies as they were.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
