AUSTRIA: Fallow Stags, Wild Boar, & A Touch Of Mozart In Austria

If you look closely at the first and second pictures I am wearing my "Jagd Stiefelhose aus Leder" (leather hunting boot trousers) by Meindl that I have often hunted in over the last decade. Of course, I am mixing my metaphors a bit by wearing Irish boots (Dubarry), but what the heck, it's an EU thing.

Yes indeed, stiefelhose aus leder are very appropriate! They are also so comfortable! I still wear a pair I bought over 35 years ago when garrisoned in Wittlich in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Mine are in red stag (elk) leather, and they are so soft and they fitted themselves so well to my body that it is like wearing a tailored pair of pants.

Congratulations on also carrying the rifle the korrekt German/Austrian way. Do not know if you do it all the time of just because you were in Austria, but I find it by far the most practical...

Ah but the boots! LOL. Can't recommend enough the Meindl Bordeaux GTX...

Congratulations on a great hunt and pleasing writing.

Lol. Thanks. The rifle is a loaner with the longer carrying strap. At home and in Africa I normally carry muzzle down over the left shoulder.

These are real boot pants. They go to just below the calf with zippers to snug them tight. My tall Teutonic boots are all winter boots - too hot for this hunt. And most of it took place in Eastern Austria in rolling hills with damp morning and evening meadows. Talk gortex was a good thing.

I did invest in a second long pair this trip. They’ll both last decades longer than me!

Couple of nice ones (trophies and the other pic under discussion )!! Congrats on the hunt!

Great report and congrats on your trophies- both are impressive.

My wife and I both love Austria. A trip to Vienna was our first international trip together while we were dating and when I first introduced her to my family.

We really should add some hunting onto our next visit!

A great report on this hunt.
Waidmannsheil my friend.

Waidmannsdank. Now I am waiting to hear about an ancient, huge kudu bull!

Thanks for taking us along, really enjoyed it. My grandfather was a market hunter in Austria from approximately 1890 to 1903

Great write-up on your hunting trip. The photos of you wearing your traditional hunting garments brings back good memories of those days. Many years ago, I hunted for Rothirsch in the forests of Germany. Although it was only a cull hunt, I found the customs and hunting traditions quite intriguing. In my case, we were required to wear the full outfit including a four-in-hand necktie. Nice to see that they have eased up a bit on that particular detail.

High tech materials have also replaced a lot of the loden and leather.

I was told by an old-timer that it was considered rude to look directly into the camera during that timeframe.

p.s. Foxi, is that you on the left with your dog?

I've noticed that as well. Tried looking online for some loden and there is little to be seen. Not even on the Frankonia Jagd website. I do hope that they don't go full-camo like here in the States. The old-timey feel was one of the things that added to the European hunting experience.

oh goodness,no (pic from 1910)
I'm the dog :)

I still have my old green loden hunting coat and hat, of course.

Nowadays I have modernized and wear Barbour ;)

Congrats on the boar and one cracker of a Fallow deer. That is a wonderful animal. I wish I could get one as nice as that. Thank you for sharing your report. Congrats again on a fantastic Fallow Buck.

Hi Lance, Hope you well. I collect Mauser rifles and they are very much part of my cultural history in Africa. Would you consider selling the rifle now a year on ? I'd like to place it in my collection of Mauser rifles. Many thx

I saw where you hunted elephant with backcountry safaris in Zimbabwe.
Was looking to book an elephant hunt and wanted to know how your hunt went
and if you would recommend them.

Thanks
Mike
hi, do you know about lions hunters, leopard hunters, and crocodiles hunters of years 1930s-1950s
I'm new to Africa Hunting. I would like to purchase a Heym 450-400 double rifle. I'm left-handed but would prefer a non-canted gun. Is anyone in the community considering parting with theirs?
