Anyone here have experience hunting in Chad?

Many thanks to all for the candid input. I have done research on where conflicts have been recently and visited with the outfitter. He has had no security issues whatsoever with his clients in recent years. Charter flight seems to be a valid option to avoid the 7 hour drive from N'djamena to the camp.

When new country is discussed, or I need to travel somewhere, I find that uk govt foreign office informations are very good and updated.
Indeed, Chad does not look safe.
All thise reports must be taken with a grain if salt. The real valuable information is from people on the ground.

I recommend The Hunting Consortium for these type of hunts. Dont worry about the scaredie cats on here. Rely on current information from the outfitter. I plan to go hunt ibex in Pakistan in the coming years. Everyone will say I am crazy. Well....Maybe so!

Pakistan isnt all that bad honestly as long as you stay out of certain areas (which are well known and easy enough to avoid)... Unlike several central and west Africa locations, Pakistan is reasonably predictable.. If you go with a reputable outfitter, I wouldn't anticipate any problems.. other than potentially getting a severe case of the shits... the food and water is notoriously tough for an American stomach to deal with.. but nothing that a little cipro wont take of for you :)

Pakistan is on my bucket list as well Phillip so we need to make a plan!

I find it odd that you call everyone who might have reservations about hunting in Chad scaredy-cats and then you discourage folks from hunting leopard with hounds due to how dangerous it can be.

It’s a DG hunt. Stuff can go wrong.

For the record I would do either if I was able.

The problem is that the media hardly reports on the problems in these regions. There is also no longer any report about the hostages, from which one has had no signs of life for years. Sure, it's often quiet in these regions for a long time, but everyone has to be aware that he can be the first in a series again. In addition, US citizens in particular are very endangered as hostages because often no one pays the ransom or the requirements cannot be satisfied.

The local outfitters are imho not a reliable source of information as they see the business first and do not take any responsibility for what should happen.

I am also well placed to have some information as I own a house in Ouagadougou/Burkina Faso and have lived there a number of times. At this time it became dangerous also for us in the capital of this country.

We are not scaredy-cats, we only warn.

I just don’t like it when people who have never been somewhere are telling someone not to go hunt where he wishes to hunt. I just want John Ed @JES Adventures to go have an awesome adventure. Did you know a few years ago I had people tell me I was crazy for going to South Africa because of Ebola!
I relate my experience in the leopard as advice from an on the ground experience. It can go sideways very easily and it did for me. That is all I am saying. Be aware and go hunt!

I was wondering if there would be a reaction to your comment. I think it needs stated occasionally. Earlier this year people were acting like it was too dangerous to even consider hunting in Poland or Romania let alone a place like Chad. Some people give good advice, others just don’t know better and side with extreme caution. Anyone considering this hunt I would think would fully understand risks before choosing to go.

I think a blanket characterization of those advising caution as Ill informed and ‘scardie-cats’ is unfair. If you read the comments you will see that some have significant on the ground experience. I don’t want to see anyone warned off a hunt unnecessarily, however, as a group, I think we are a little above discounting informed advice freely offered.

You are right. The people that replied back actually gave meaningful insight to the country. However, I think the trend is overly negative sometimes on AH. I posted a YouTube video of people hunting Barbary sheep in Sudan last year. I thought was a positive step to see organized hunting in region. The comments generally consisted of what a terrible idea it was rather than seeing it as a positive for hunting in general. There are a lot of places I’d go to hunt with a guide but wouldn’t consider as a tourist, Johannesburg being one of those places.

This is not about general crime such as theft or robbery, but about a very special risk to which we, as europeans and in general also many people of non-muslim religion, are exposed.

Besides the danger that some fanatic has chosen you as a victim, there is still the risk of abduction which can develop, as everyones knows, into a horror scenario. Such actions are rarely planned in the country itself so that the risk is difficult to estimate and, because the hunting areas often lie in country borders, very high. The different countries, which often do not cooperate with each other, make any form of rescue extremely difficult.

Wow, this is excellent news indeed really hope it all comes together and we can read a future hunt report on a super hunting adventure.

What would you hunt in joburg?.... :E Shrug: :E Rofl:

A certain fellow in red overalls and a beret perhaps. Although that would be varminting and nut hunting…

I waited to reply on this one for a bit. While I never worked in Chad I have recently returned from working in Nigeria. The threat on the Nigerian / Chad border is real. A scaredie cat impacts fewer people than a stupid cat. Being a victim of local crime is on you. When you are rolled by a terrorist organization then you become a problem for others to deal with. Your name is added to the list of people tracked by the US Embassy. The Human Intelligence network begins to look for you and some analyst begins to figure out some things. Depending on whats happening at the time and who took you there may be strategic level collection assets re-tasked or staging of a rescue force. It would be a shame for someone to get killed or injured because someone who wasnt a scaredie cat went hunting.

I think before traveling we all have a responsibility to dissect the threat and how it impacts others. If it just impacts you then go ahead. If others can be impacted then maybe you re-look the "can I vs Should I" line of reasoning.

I have been called a few things, but "scaredie cat" hah, this is a new one !

Having lived in Algeria during the indepence war, or in Lebanon when different militias were shooting at each other probably qualifies me as a "scaredie cat".

I am not "on the ground" in Chad, but the reports we are getting through military channels are that the sitiation is "unstable", so anybody who feels like going to hunt there, go ahead and good luck !

Pakistan, now, is a totally different story, that woud be my dream hunt, a good outfitter will certainly avoid some unsecure areas, and then you have the choice of 16 different species to hunt.

The food is great, at least to my taste, just avoid tap water, and you´ll be fine. And yes, I have been on the ground, lived there during three years.

I watched a Jim Shockey episode about him hunting in chad for kudu a few years back. So I am pretty much an expert. (just joking)

Though chad is an unstable country if you can find a good connection and someone who knows what is going on, on the ground I see no reason to not give it a shot. If you feel adventurous then I wish you the best.

I remember when there was a war in my Country, some parts of country were perfectly safe, far away from any warlike activities which included crime activities, and similar - in other parts of country.

So, for sure, safe travel in some areas in some African troubled countries is possible, but how, when, where, is very hard to get information to rely upon? Which source to trust? Which source is detailed enough?

in this case, I wish good and safe hunting, looking fwd to hunt report. (and I am a bit envious as well)

I do want to hunt in Pakistan as well! I will go there someday to hunt Ibex.
Many say I am crazy to even contemplate it. I think you can sympathise with this? Hence my reaction to this post. Chad, Pakistan, Cameroon, Kyrgyzstan the reaction is all the same from the armchair experts. You should have seen the jaws drop in Texas when I told people I was going to Kyrgyzstan by myself a few years back! If I had listened to anyone I would never have gone.
I do appreciate your life experience for sure.
My point is everywhere has risks and we should all do our due diligence. Hunting AK is far more dangerous than most any hunt in Africa.

Regards,
Philip
