Just seeing if anyone is traveling to Alaska by way of Anchorage anytime soon, and would be willing to pick up some ammo at a local gun shop for me and bring it back to the lower 48? I know it's a long shot, but I figure I'd ask anyways.

It never hurts to ask.

We have two grandchildren in Alaska and every once in awhile my wife just goes. I don't believe there is anything coming up.

I will be through on the 28th - 29th. PM me if I can help

This is worded a bit confusing. Do you want the ammo going up to Anchorage AK or coming back down from Anchorage? I am currently in Michigan and head back up to Anchorage as my final destination the 30th.

I do not understand how a gunshop in Alaska would have something that isn't available in the lower 48?

Gun shops in Alaska often borderline on amazing, but I can't see this being a thing.

Looks like bringing it BACK from Anchorage AK to me.

You would most certainly be surprised, with the amount of big game they have as well as people with money who collect guns; I've seen all sorts of odd/rare ammo and guns advertised in Alaska from both this forum and gunbroker.

I lived in Alaska for a long time. I know there are a ton of great guns up there, but nothing that can't be had in the lower 48.

You can only bring 11 pounds of ammo and only 2 pieces of luggage .I was just there 5 months and alaska airlines sucks .The guys by me on the plane had their moose meat taken they took on hunt except 100 pounds .They limit bags to 50 pounds also so that limits your stuff how well i know.

The ammo is near Anchorage, was looking for transport from AK to the lower 48.

The gun shop has 450 Dakota ammo for a good price. Not something you see very often, and when I have, its $$$$.

I looked and I think its 50 lbs if you fly within the state of AK, but 11 lbs if you fly outside of the state on Alaska Air.
50lbs domestic. 11 international

If flying Alaska Air, each passenger is allowed 50lbs of ammunition in factory boxes or non-crushable plastic type boxes in their checked bags. And kiddo traveling with you can take 50lbs as well.

I normally fly back home to
Alaska with what I need and Muskox is totally correct, typically our selection of ammo in AK is meager at best…in this situation there are several boxes of something not sold all that often and the store has them at discount price…basically retail price decade or two ago.

Sorry Big_Easy that I couldn’t help more, mid-flight to Zimbabwe and flew from Kenai so wasn’t even able to go pick it up. Hopefully you called and got it set aside. I’ve had them set ammo aside and mailed them a check… old school place that will take a check but no cards.

Gotcha. Sadly you missed me heading out by about a week.
Alaska is funny with ammo, which is why I started handloading. Though certain powders can be very tough to find sometimes. Obviously you were lucky to find a less common caliber still on the shelf.

Stand by for soap box:

I am of the theory that people that do not live in Alaska should not take advantage of these kinds of situations.

Ammunition is a challenge to ship anywhere, in Alaska it must be trucked from the lower 48 or take on a ship.

If you are in town and you buy a rifle, then go hard.

I personally think it is bad form.

I have lived in Barrow, Sitka, Fairbanks and Anchorage.

Every gun shop has treasures, but the challenge in getting them there to me, means they should be reserved for those that need them.

450 Dakota is probably a rare enough cat that there are not more than a few rifles in Alaska so chambered. But still.
