Anyone else having problems with CCI primers?

I was able to get 173 rounds of 22 Hornet reloaded last night for todays range day. I couldn't purchase any Winchester Small Rifle Primers locally so I went with Federal Small Rifle Match Primers i have on hand. Of the 173 reloads i shot up 126 at the Range without a misfire, or any other problem.

My recipe is:
Powder: 10.6gr LILGUN,
Bullets: Hornady 55gr FMJ-BT and BTSP,
Primers: FEDERAL PREMIUM SMALL RIFLE MATCH Primers.
C.O.A.L is: 1.774 - 1.778 inches

With the CCI #400 Small Rifle Primers the load gave me an Average Velocity, shooting 20 rounds, using the Garmin Pro Chronograph, of 2310 fps.

I haven't chronographed the velocity using the Federals yet. If I can get another range day in between rain showers. I'll check the velocity and average velocity.

The DNT TNC335R sits high at 2.75 inches on my Ruger 77/22. With Digital and Thermal at 50 yds 4 shots 2 are touching on the X, 1 wide right, 1 wide left making a 1 inch group. The wide shots are shooter error, not mounting the rifle to should consistently.

I think that the 22 Hornet (somewhat like the 375 H&H) benefits from only resizing the neck while still using full length dies. You just back off the sizing die a bit so you don't push back the shoulder. This will effectively tighten the headspace and should improve ignition. It also improves brass life.

I did a quick look up on differences between the Hornet and K Hornet. The K Hornet has a more profile shoulder, which ultimately gives the K Hornet more velocity and longer case life. According to what I read: The standard Hornet case can be shot in the K Hornet and the standard brass will form to the K Hornet. However the K Hornet cannot be used in the standard Hornet.

I'll have to look at my notes on what I chronographed the 45 grain V Max. It was devastating on water filled gallon tea jugs as you say in my previous OP regarding the 22 Hornet. And I think I sent you a photo of the devasting results on a particular critter.

Over the past 15 years or so I have fired more than 25,000 CCI BR4's. While there have been a few FTF in all that they have ALL been due to either headspace issues or weak firing pin springs. Not saying that it can't happen, but IME it ain't fookin' likely.

It’s not a FN Winchester M70 by chance is it?

have a couple of FN Winchester M70 the one I was shooting the most was experiencing light primer strikes after about 300 rounds replaced all of my FN Winchester M70 springs with a heavier Wolf Spring you can certainly feel the difference of the heavier spring solved my light primer strike

Yep. Just like scopes and mounts. Human nature, for whatever reason, tends to ignore the obvious. Many things can cause FTF. Check each one independently and check off the list if ok.

These threads beg for anecdotes and usually don’t disappoint So, BTW, just remembered one. Was hunting with a friend some years ago… opening day deer season. We went separate ways to meet back up around noon. At noon, he related his experience of getting up to a buck at 50 yards. Click kachink, click kachink, click kachink. He was shooting a Springfield 03-A3, a rifle not exactly known for a weak striker fall! We took the bolt apart and sure enough- it was loaded with old, dirty, congealed grease. He hadn’t shot it in years so experienced the consequences. “Someone” had overdone the lube thing inside the bolt body! One of the first things I do with any bolt gun. Take the bolt apart, inspect and flush with solvent. Lightly grease the lugs’ rear contact surfaces and use only graphite inside.

Graphite gums up over time and hardens, which can be even worse than old grease. It had to go in the ultrasonic cleaner to remove all of the hardened graphite. Learned that lesson that hard way.

A very light application, 4 - 5 drops, of light weight oil such as 0 - 20w motor oil or sewing machine oil works well. In extreme cold, degrease and run the firing pin spring dry.

Ok I have an issue with some no.200 CCi primers, I’m trying work up a load in my 7x57 Ai. I had 3 rounds go bang per usual however I could not get the rest to go. Went home and primed 6 empty cases and tried those could not light them. I punched those primers out seated primers from a different box of CCi 200 primers, same lot those went bang. I’ve never had this problem before. I also measured and confirmed that both sets were seated to the same depth. The first picture is of the ones that I couldn’t light, the second is once fired brass from PPU factory 7x57 ammo I use as fire form loads. I’ve shot 200 rounds of this with no problems. I should also mention this is a Mauser 98 action with new wolf extra power firing pin spring and the firing pin is clean.

Whilst not cci, I reload for a few people and they have been having issues with white river (usa) primers. One in fifty won’t fire , one of the primers I removed didn’t appear to have any priming compound in it

Ya, that’s what I’ve got to do. I’ll probably never trust CCi again anyhow.
