I’m not from B.C. but Saskatchewan is still in western Canada!

Thank fellas, I am in Telkwa BC. I was hoping to pick your brains in the future regarding the nuances of taxidermy and shipping of trophy’s back to Canada as well as insurance stuff etc. Your experience and recommendations would be of great help.

From Alberta. I've had 16 safaris in RSA, Tanzania, Mozambique and Namibia in which brought back trophies and in some cases, transported firearms. Hope I can be of some help with those nuances.

Edmonton, AB. Just did my first safari in September and awaiting taxidermy. Will let you know how the importing process goes.

I’ve been twice. The taxidermist in Moose Jaw where I live does a LOT of African animals and he also imports the trophies. He is very well known and does extremely excellent work. Quite a few well known people in the hunting community…even the Landy’s from Swamp People! Not as close as Alberta I know but couldn’t hurt to talk to them and pick his brain.

Done 5 so far, hoping for a return in 26. I am always available to help a fellow hunter. I am a do myself kind of guy. Import all my own trophies so have some knowledge with that. Take my own guns and also do my own paperwork.

There may be a slight chance we met last fall. Were you in the Hudson Hope area hunting? I spoke with a guy from Telkwa who was interested in Africa and said he was planning a 2026 hunt? You?? We BS's for some time.

Open for a chat.

Would not recommend getting taxidermy done in Africa for two reasons: lower quality & significantly increase your shipping cost. Cargo is generally handled roughly - would never ship a finished prized / breakable piece.
The trade off isn’t worth it IMO.

For importation of trophies hire a company / taxidermist that knows the ropes. They do it faster and more efficient (saves the headaches too). Speaking from experience, having multiple shipments a year in Canada.

Check out Orion Taxidermy in Moose Jaw. A little far from you but he’s won international awards and does lots of Africa work. He also has an import/export company called Rigel Logistics. He received my shipments from both of my Africa hunts.

Calgary.

I have had only one head mounted in Africa, my Cape Mountain zebra.

All the other heads have been Euros. (rather spend less on taxidermy and more on hunting) ( now if I could just stop buying and selling guns etc)

I've had a few rugs done.

Rigel Logistics imported my trophies from my 2014 RSA hunt.

I imported my trophies from my 2019 RSA hunt to the Calgary airport. Easy-peasy.

I am rather pissed that the Federal government only allowed import of my trophies through Toronto or Vancouver for my 2023 RSA hunt. This required an agent in Vancouver who I feel somewhat raped by (fees excessively high).

I'm not sure if I will bring back anymore trophies if I get to hunt Africa again. The taxidermy and shipping fees have become prohibitively high IMO.

Not sure why you were not allowed to import from any International Port, Calgary being one. Maybe had something to do with shortage of staff? CFIA?

I am lucky, only used Vancouver as my Port of Entry for every hunt. Cleared all my own shipments without issue, one must be fully versed in all import rules with printed emails and regs but it has only ever been 10 mins at CBSA and off I go to get crates.

I bet I know the company who screwed you over in Van, don't feel bad, they do that to all customers. They are well known here in BC by taxidermists and fellow hunters NOT to use that name when mentioned.

I called your mentioned company in 2022 for info on importation and asking about their fees. Man was I scared at the price response. Verified and enforced do it myself.

Glad I did. Now 3-4 more forum members also had no issues doing their own.

Morning Rob, Any feeling for how the 300 H&H shoots? How's the barrel condition?

Hello. I see you hunted with Sampie recently. If you don't mind me asking, where did you hunt with him? Zim or SA? And was it with a bow? What did you hunt?

I am possibly going to book with him soon.
Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
