Any Black Professional Hunters I Should Know Of?

Johnny Hochobeb was the long time tracker for Joof Lamprecht and became a Namibian PH. My daughter and I hunted with Johnny a few years ago at Hunters Namibian Safari.

But which two are the PH's?

My first guess, easy, the one with the big stick ;) and the second, the one with the sand/beige camo :).

I hunted with Isaak at Khomas Highland last year and enjoyed every minute.
Great guy, knowledgeable, friendly and a brilliant guide.

The one with the big stick and the one carrying the pointy stick.

(If Moosa spoke English proficiently he would be a PH in a heartbeat.)

:E Doh: was focused on everyone except the one with the pointy stick... :A Skull:

Just for giggles: At what point does one become "native"?

Good question Wayne, I was born in Africa, same as my mother and my grandmother. All of us very much white, do I qualify for "native" :E Head Scratch:

Native
A person born in a specified place or associated with a place by birth, whether subsequently resident there or not.

I've only been on one African hunt. That hunt was booked with Cruiser Safaris before I became an AH member. A previous hunter wrote a book titled Safari Wind that chronicled his hunt with Cruisers from the planning stages through the return flight to the States. I read the book and gleaned everything I could from it. The author's PH was Hans Moatshe. My hunt was booked 6 years after the book was written. I requested Hans because I felt like I knew him. I hunted with Hans for 10 days. His knowledge of animals and their habits never ceased to amaze me. Hans had been a PH for 16 years, so I should not have been surprised. The first shot he had me take was on a Blesbok at 220 yards. Hans told me, "he was a good one." Hans was correct, back at the skinning shed the animal rated SCI Gold. My respect for the man and his abilities increased on a daily basis. Most of my working life has been spent on a construction site where Journeymen of the various trades performed their work. You soon learn to tell the good ones from the guys just trying to make a living. My grandfather a Master Carpenter and oft times Superintendent told me "that all a Journeyman needs is a clear understanding of what the "owner" wants, and sufficient materials to do the job, how he does the work is up to him." I will forever consider Hans to be a Master at his craft.

I believe @Kowas Hunting Safaris has a black PH on staff.
We are proud to have Matheus Theofelus on the Kowas Hunting Safaris team while he is qualified since 2003. You can ask our references about their experience with Matheus Theofelus: ethical, knowledgeable, patient, considerate, a mentor for others in our community. He has tracking skills no comparison. Not even to mention his great eyesight! We are priviledged to have Matheus as a family member with Kowas.

All of AGAGIA PH are black, they are located in Namibia . Forrest

Hans Moatshe is a fantastic PH.

I do not believe it is a "racism" issue within the hunting community. I think the biggest obstacle for Black PHs in Africa is their command of foreign languages, including English. Many white African PHs have a good grasp on English, German, AND the local dialects. This allows them to communicate well with clients, trackers, drivers, local tribesmen, AND booking agents that will send clients their way. IMO, a PH's communication skills are just as much a factor in their success as their hunting skills. Unfortunately, many black African hunters can not break the communication barrier.

Desert Dog, I have a similar photo of Hans and Frekki and me with a BWB and other game as well. I agree with your assessment of the importance of communication skills. Hans without a doubt spoke better English than many of the people I come in contact with on a daily basis in the U.S.

Not historical.....but there is a man named Nixon I think that seems to be a very good PH. I thinks he guides mostly in Zimbabwe. He is the man who guided the hunter a couple of years ago that got the elephant with 120 pound tusks.
ABSOLUTELY... and I have also hunted with Nixon's son, Simon, in Zim. Gonarezhou areas. Both excellent PH's.
Tanzania also has black PHs..hunted with Patrick in the Selous years ago.
The list is actually huge and there are many..also plenty in Zim currently doing their PH course.

Thank you Bruce

Hi tigris115,

At "Khomas Highland Hunting Safaris" in Namibia, my excellent PH was an ethnic black man (Damara language group), who's name is "Adab".
He's not only an incredible hunter and very personable but, his wife is always jolly (head Chef at the camp), his children are all very well behaved and Adab speaks at least 3 languages fluently.
If you ever visit Anchorage and have time to pop over to my place, you will see that, there's more than one or two framed pictures, on the wall in my bar, featuring Adab (without me in there to clutter up the scene).

There is another excellent PH there who also happens to be a black man, named Isaak.
He PH'd for my friend Dale, during our Aug-Sept safari.
Dale is still singing happy songs about hunting with Isaac.
Likewise, the times I was around Isaac in camp, I noticed he was a perfectly gracious fellow who spoke multiple languages as well.

Cheers,
Velo Dog.
