Anti Malaria before Zimbabwe in June?

Just get something that is close to 100% deet. I send all my hunting clothing I use for Africa to insectshield for them to commercially apply the permethrin to. It's super easy and relatively inexpensive. The Sawyers stuff works great too but it doesn't last long through washes, while the commercially applied stuff can last a very long time. I've used both options over the years and I have yet to get any tick bites on me while hunting Africa. I treat my socks, pants, shirts and jackets and I only wear pants. No shorts so my legs don't get torn apart.

I jave never heard of insectashield. I will definitely check into that. It may be too late for this trip. I am bringing shorts, but I think I'm honna bring a couple pants for back up in case the shorts thing doesn't agree with me.

Have you seen ticks outside South Africa to really justify this? I’ve seen ticks attached to animals in every African country I’ve hunted, but I’ve only seen them on me from brush in South Africa. It seems reclaimed cattle land where no burning takes place is worst.

The Travel Health nurse told me that 100% Deet was toxic. IIRC, 50% is the strongest you should use.

Honestly, I have not seen many ticks in general but I am not purposely looking for them either. I don't worry about it knowing my clothes are protected. This is my experience from hunting South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe. I do not use deet or any other product on my arms and face while actually hunting to try and repel ticks, never seen the need. I just go off the assumption that any tick is going to come in contact with my clothing that is treated with permethrin. That is my hope, but we all know that nothing will work perfectly every time.

As for Deet, I am not an expert on this by any means. If you do enough research, you will find that Deet should be fine if used properly and not ingested or exposure to your eyes regardless of the concentration. Does it cause toxicity in some people? Yes there are reports of that, but the numbers are super low and since people eat Tide pods, it makes you wonder how this product is being used. The higher concentrations allow it to work longer, not better. It doesn't kill insects like permethrin can, it just repels and keeps things from biting. Most places I have seen recommend 100% deet only when going to a place that has insect borne diseases such as malaria. 50% would be the minimum I would use but you might have to apply it more often.

I've been to Zimbabwe several times. Back in the 80's and 90's I took Mefloquine. Years later my dad went color blind. The doctor asked Dad if he had ever been to Africa, and if so, had he taken Mefloquine. My dad told the doctor he had, the doctor told him the Mefloquine caused him to go color blind. Since that day I take Malerone with me on a hunt, if I get malaria symptoms I take the Malerone, otherwise, I stopped taking any malaria medicine regardless of where I hunt.

Roger that! I wondered about the permetherin. We used that in the army, of course we also put flea and tick collars around our ankles too :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: so not everything we did was a good idea! What do y'all recommend for actual bug spray? That Bens 100 looks pretty good or does it not really matter as long as it has a high percentage of Deet.
I'll have Avon Skin So Soft Bug Guard plus an Off deet type spray. I don't anticipate too many bugs in August but you never know.

About twenty years ago, I toured the Auschwitz labour and death camp (together with my wife's idiot Australian cousin, who slouched around bored with his hands in his pockets, and later bought a 'really cool' silver ring in Krakow, moulded in the form of a human skull, which reminded him of the SS logo).

In the same way that schoolchildren are bussed to Auschwitz to consider the end point of high socialism, so they ought to be taken to South Africa and Zimbabwe so that they can appreciate the effects of black majority rule.

I have a cancellation hunt I just signed up for in Zim on somewhat short notice. Any suggestions on how to get a script for doxycycline without lengthy doctor processes? I'm not looking for a full workup, scheduling 3 months out, etc. I know it's not over the counter in the US but I'm looking for faster options.

@Green Chile
I messaged my care provider through their online portal on what i needed and why. That afternnoon the script was sent to the pharmacy for pickup. Was very easy and convenient. Might look into that option if available?

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
