Another tire kicking thread. See below for specs

Backyardsniper, if you are really interested in getting a "nice" gun for your wife, I'd strongly suggest a 6.5 X 55 Sporterized Swedish Mauser. You can generally buy them for a "song." There just isn't a milder recoiling rifle that performs well on game anywhere in its' class.

I would

That is a sweet rig right there. I really like that stock! That's the real deal too! Got that switch!!!
Alas the switch is a fake, just screwed into the stock. The receiver is a semi-only from Fulton Armory, but everything else is OG Vietnam-era USGI.

I've never seen one in a stock like that! Unless otherwise has the EBR stock..
In the early part of Vietnam, they still used the Browning Automatic Rifle as a squad-support gun. But it was too big and heavy for the ARVN plus it needed its own cartridge, magazines, parts, and so on. The M14 was intended to replace it AND the M1 Garand, after all, but it had trouble with full-auto.

So in 1963 they designed a new stock with a pistol grip for better recoil control, a folding front grip (absent on mine), and a different buttplate with a more secure shoulder lockup. Add a slip-over moderator to the flash hider and a bipod setup and you had the M14E2 (redesignated M14A1 in '66) automatic rifle. Which worked... okay. The modifications helped but not really enough. The fire rate was still too high and the recoil too heavy, and the magazine capacity wasn't enough for suppressive fire.

But the stock itself is very comfortable and they were coveted by those who could get them. Much later the USMC had a fiberglass version with an adjustable cheekrest on their DMRs . McMillan sold them until a few years ago, in fact. Now the original E2 stocks are very hard to find and the seller I got mine from sold out long ago. But there are rifles with them on Gunsinternational right now and you can still find the stocks now and then.

I've seen photos of US soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan still rocking wood stocks in the early days of GWOT, and one recent one of Ukrainian troops with a scoped wood-stocked M14 next to a HK G36 if I remember.

Here's one of my favorites of a SEAL during Desert Storm:

That's awesome!! Thanks for sharing that information.

Mine had a wood stock. I was lucky to get access to a lot of different weapons while we were over there. I had a integrally suppressed Sten at one time, it was too much fun. We found a PPSH41 with a bunch of ammo in a cache, we used to play with it just for fun. We borrowed a Dragonov from a guy that didn't need it anymore and we also had an Iranian copy of a GS36. It was a real handful on full auto.

But, but, 6.5 Creedmoor!!

OP,

take a look at the new Montana Rifle Company 2022. They offer a wood and blue version.

A .308 Win with a Barnes TTSX 150 - not the TSX - will be comfortable for your wife to shoot and effective on critters.

Adding an APA muzzle brake will bring recoil to near zero. They make some that are easily removed in the field.

In that price range, I know youre tire kicking... but I'd go with a Christensen Mesa in 308 and top it with a Zeiss V4 Conquest 3-12x... you'd be in for right about $2K if you found the mesa on a typical "sale" and if you bought the Conquest on Guidefitter with tax and shipping included.. and be ready to take on anything a 308 can tackle at any range the 308 is capable of engaging at...

My Mesa (titanium) in 300 PRC is stupid accurate, to the point of boring with almost anything I feed it.. (at least as accurate as my old "sniper" rifle from back in the day).. and was smooth as a babys butt from the factory the day I got it..

Its been such a good rifle I am seriously contemplating picking up a 308 Mesa now to sit in the safe next to the 300... Its not like I need another 308 (Ive already got 4 in the safe)... but I have honestly been just amazed at how good the rifle really is at the price point..

I was checking out the Christensens on euro optics the other day. I have had a couple of the ridgelines and they were great shooters, I have not owned a Messa yet. That may be the way to go, as soon as I recover from the $1800 worth of primers that the Vodka convinced me I needed last night :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: i'm gonna have to put a breathalyzer on my phone. The bank even texted me and asked if it was a fraudulent purchase, that's only happened once before and that involved a strip club in Chicago.

Possibly in the market for a 308 or 30/06, or similar. I just happen to have a lot of reloading components for those two. The wife has taken a greater interest in shooting recently and we have a trip to Zim in 2026. I'm hoping she may become interested enough to want to shoot the bait animals for my leopard. Also, I wouldn't mind having a pleasant to shoot off the sticks practice/plains game rifle for myself. Preferably wood and blued. Would love to have a CZ 550 Varmint in 308. Open to ideas though, so dig through your safes and see what you have sitting in there that you may want to part with.
Yes, I know I can just go to the LGS and pick one out but, I have always had great luck finding interesting rifles and meeting new friends purchasing rifles on here like this. I am not opposed to other calibers, except 6.5 manbuns, don't even bother with that, not interested. Other than that, let me know what y'all have.
I have one of these coming in next week if you are interested.

Christensen Arms Model 14 Mesa Ducks Unlimited Edition is a right hand bolt action rifle in .308 Win. Cal. It has a 23 inch ported barrel with a 1:10 twist. It is outfitted with Leupold VX-Freedom 3-9x50 Scope. The butt stock is a dark brown polymer pistol grip with black webbing. The forearm is a dark brown polymer with black webbing. The bolt is spiral fluted. .308 Winchester

I agree with the Swede suggestion. Get one of those donors and really doll it up for her. No need to change calibers and as mentioned those Swedish Mausers are still fairly easily and economically acquired. If I had a spouse, that's what I'd do for her. We'd have our own battery of African war horse veteran rifles. It would be a nice trio: her Swedish 6.5, my 98 Mauser 404 Jeffery, and my 03A3 Springfield 30-06. Oh my ... I think I may have to start dating again! Nuts ... I see my Viagra prescription ran out ... fourteen years ago. Sigh.

It’s a very good idea. Or you could do what I did, have a custom M70 made in 7x57, everything exactly as you want it, and
then have your wife claim it as her rifle.

@Mac Baren, I live central to city of Cincinnati. I have work travel early this week but could hopefully meet later this week (with no schedule changes). What area of town are you working/staying in?
Kind regards
Ron
