Another Clothing Question

In my experience although expensive the thick cotton Westley Richards shirts and pants have been the best keeping Tetsee flies from biting through
Fortunately tetse flies don’t like the way I taste! In Mozambique they drove my PH crazy and pretty much left me alone. Thankful that they did, one bit me on the hand and I thought someone put a cigarette out on my hand.

You can swish all you want with a gnu tail, but they will find a spot, like the edge of your back that does NOT rest against the seat cushion and nail you. The PH would usually not kill them, but once and a while he would catch one and pull its wings off for spite.

I picked up an all-cotton shirt at the Safari Outdoor store in Pretoria last year which I particularly like. It is the Serengeti shirt by Ruggedwear. It gets softer every time I wash it but still has enough heft to drape well. More importantly, it is roomy in the belly area so the shirt isn't tight across my midriff.

I was in Safari Outdoor a couple of weeks ago, I should’ve looked for shirts especially ones with plenty of room in the belly!

Nice! I have given away all my safari hunting shirts without a vent. Cotton with a vent in the back has proven to be the best for me in both short and long sleeves.

If you spending any time in South Africa go to a Jonssons Workwear outlet. Most farmers/hunters in SA would shop there.

They stock stretch cotton long sleeve and short sleeve, long cotton pants in olive, dark brown, and khaki and if desirous, those very short hunting shorts that your ph wears !

Great business and good service.

If any of you have a Columbia outlet store nearby, they’re have g a pretty incredible sale right now… about 25% of the store is on 75% off clearance… everything else remaining in the store is buy one, get a second item 50% off..

If you like the pfg clothing line.. I picked up a khaki/olive drab/brown patterned shirt for $14 tonight as well as a pair of long, ripstop, khaki pfg shorts for $16… either would (will) make good warm weather Southern Africa hunting wear…

I probably saw a half dozen different short and long sleeve pfg shirts in typical “hunt” colors (various shades of brown, green, tan) all for $19 or less… as well as a similar number of pants in the same colors all for $19-$25…

If my closet wasn’t already full of “Africa” hunting clothes, I would have grabbed a lot more than the single shirt and shorts that I grabbed tonight, and I even thought about checking the Disney Store phone number for a quick order.
Yes, synthetic, quick-dry shirts are fine to take. They don’t need ironing, and laundry services won’t damage them.

@jpr9954 - looks like a good sturdy canvas cotton shirt? Now, just replace the cheap & noisy “Velcro” on the pocket flaps with real ‘buttons’ and you’ll have form AND function

I like to wear the Jonsson shirts they provide. They are very similar in weight to the PFG fishing shirts that I also have. I always ask for long sleeve, because they normally provide them in short if not specified.

We even stopped at the Jonsson store in Pretoria on our way out so we could grab a few more.

Nice old saga boy! The shirt is not bad either.

I was told the same years ago, and still take some of the same clothes I’ve had for 20+ years. All cotton mostly Cabelas. I also wear Tag. I miss the old Cabelas catalog.
I miss the Cabela’s quality most. I still own a lot of Cabela’s sweaters and hunting clothing. Now it is all junk made in China.

I think you could benefit greatly from a pair of Filson hunting chaps.

@MS 9x56 - I like Filson “Chaps” especially for rabbit hunting in briars, but they don’t call it “Tin Cloth” because it’s quiet….like dragging a garbage can thru the woods

Can’t argue with that. But I have never had a thorn penetrate them.

I mused for a moment , worsted wool jocks, mmm . A bit scratchy I’d imagine. Better to settle for wearing merino wool I think.
Yes everything cotton except Merino wool socks with a liner. And my experience in Africa is everything comes back ironed.
In the cold where I live and the Rocky Mountains where I hunt up to 100d per year as well as Alaska and
Northern Canada, Cotton kills as do most synthetics.... Wool is King!

@Surgeon1 - AGREE, for cold to Extremely Cold weather = wool is warm, ‘retains heat’, durable, tolerates some light rain and still Warm (but gets Heavy). For long johns, shirts, pants, vest, hat - I prefer Wool and especially for Stand Hunting. However, “packing” wool jackets for air travel takes up a lot of room - some of my K.O.M. And Sleeping Indian does Not make the long trips. Seems most of the guys that wear Wool today are “Old” — synthetics rules as do the latest “Fashion-Camo-patterns”…wool might be going the way of wood stocks & revolvers??

For pants I wear the Kuiu Tiberon shorts as they allow a lot of airflow. For shirts I wear Tag Safari cotton shirts that my tailor has altered to allow more airflow while keeping out bugs. Professional dancers use a very fine mesh cloth that is super-stretchy. This cloth can be purchased at just about any fabric store. The tailor cut a long horizontal slit in the back of the shirt and a vertical slit under each armpit and sewed in the mesh cloth. This modification gives more movement and stretch and allows quite a lot of air through the shirt while keeping out all the creepy-crawlies and no-see-ums.

I also wear the nylon boxer-briefs. On one buff hunt in Zimbabwe, the female camp manager met me right as we pulled in from a long day and she was profusely apologizing in broken english. I finally understood her to say that the laundry staff had melted my nylon underwear with a hot iron.....we laughed about that the rest of the hunt.

@JD Noblin - that is a GREAT Photo !! Everything about it - starting with your Big Smile, the ‘bloody legs’, rifle displayed, nice leather cartridge belt, and a quality shirt! (The Buff looks good too). Everything looks “Perfect”! Congratulations..
