I've been debating on adding a caliber to the stable. After much deliberation I decided to pull the trigger on a wrong handed ;-) new Winchester mod. 70 in .416 Rem. The cost of components vs the Rigby tipped the scales to the Remmy.

CDNN looked to be about $100-200 cheaper than anywhere else I looked.

In case anyone else is looking for an itch to scratch.

Thanks Matt. Looking forward to load development.

Very good price

my absolute favorite load is a 300gr Barnes TSX over 81.5gr of H4895. I use this with Hornady brass and Federal 215 primers. the average muzzle velocity is 2700fps and accuracy is 1 MOA from my Win M70. this load is suitable for animals ranging from medium PG up to and including cape buffalo.

the warthog in my avatar was killed with this load and that's a 416 RM on his nose. at 140 yards it dropped him like a bad habit leaving a red mist covering the grass behind him.

Awesome that's a lot of whoop ass moving fast! Thanks. Any pet loads for the 400gr pills? Planning on using Varget or H4350 as I have 8lb jugs of those that I use for .460wby and .260rem.

That is a REALLY good price.
Congrats on the rifle and let us know how it shoots.

A new addition to test on the piggies...cool.

My thoughts exactly. I, almost, feel sorry for them.

Great buy! Love my M70 416 as well.

Waiting for mine.

I have a load for 400gr A-frames using IMR 4064 but I cant remember exactly what the grain weight was. if you want it Ill see about digging it up.

but ive yet to see a 350gr or 400gr load that beats my 300gr TSX load. the 300gr TSX load shoots flat, drives deep, and causes some pretty extreme damage! the only time I would use a different load would be solids for hippo/elephant/rhino. if I was going to use solids id probably use the new 400gr Swift solid... that thing looks mean! another member here @ActionBob used Woodleigh hydro solids in his 416 RM for elephant and I believe he was pleased with the results.

Sounds good. I work some up and see how they do. I grabbed 50pc of Hornady brass, Norma brass in .416 was higher than .460! Crazy!

Good deal on a real good rifle;) I'm sure it will serve you well. I find it tough to beat the Modern M70's for out of the box accuracy and proper feeding/function in 375 H&H and 416 Rem Mag type calibers.

I hope so, I handled a new mod 70 in 30.06 before buying this one. It was very smooth cycling, I wasn't expecting that in a factory CRF action.

Any scope suggestions? Leaning toward Swaro Z8i 1x8x24 with some Talley QD rings.

Have you ever shot a Cape Buffalo with the 300 grain TSX?

I have a Winny 416 Rem as well. Very nice rifle! Feeds very smoothly and is as accurate as ANY rifle I own, and more so than even some small caliber rifles in my collection. All you have to do it hang on!
I used 400 Gr Swift A Frame bullets loaded to 2325 FPS for my Cape Buffalo, and it did a perfect job. Load was 77gr of Varget. Recoil is manageable, and accuracy is excellent with this load.

I have a custom pre 64 Model 70 in 416 Rem that I plan to use in July for a Cape Buffalo in the Bubye. I have a lot of 350 TSX's and Solids, 400 gr TSX's and Solids. I am thinking of running the 400 gr bullet's up to 2350 and seeing if they print close enough together. It shoots Northfork's like a laser so I am hoping the Barnes work as well. Rl-15 and H4895 abound in the reloading room, any other powders to try?

Congrats on the 416 Rem, it will serve you well

i use a Leupold VX 6 1-6x24 with an illuminated reticle. what ever you go with, make sure it has a minimum power of 1 and i would strongly suggest a scope that has an optional illuminated reticle.

Have you ever shot a Cape Buffalo with the 300 grain TSX?

not yet, but ive had this bullet pass length wise (chest to tail) through a blue wildebeest so its got more then enough penetration.

Hello Doug,
I am Philippe from France and plan to go hunting Caprivi in 2026, Oct.
I have read on AH you had some time in Vic Falls after hunting. May I ask you with whom you have planned / organized the Chobe NP tour and the different visits. (with my GF we will have 4 days and 3 nights there)
Thank in advance, I will appreciate your response.
Merci
Philippe

Hi Walden. Good morning from England, Chris here (The Englishman!) from Croatia. Firstly it was a pleasure to meet you and Michelle - a fellow Sanderson! I have finally joined AH as I enjoy it very much. Glad you enjoyed the hunt and your write up which I read on AR was very good indeed. I am sending on WhatsApp pics from Bojan of some of the animals hunted recently. Take care and best regards. CS.
