Animal Engraving On a Double Rifle

Obviously, a sidelock offers the sort of canvas for truly magnificent work. But a gifted artist can do remarkable things in a very small space. This lovely deep relief red stag with the bit of gold accent was created by unknown artist when this 9.3x74R was built around WWI.

Iv not seen much gold accents so superbly executed. Very tasteful.

Can you tell a bit more about the action? I do not think I’ve ever seen one like it

Is that a clamshell action?

It is a unique one in my experience. When the top lever is turned to the right two side plates extend left and right of the action. They are like large, lockable side clips. Upon closure they fit over the round trunnions and into the circular recess in the barrels. If you look closely, it also has double under lugs and hidden bite as well. I don't think it could be made any stronger.

Below is a clam shell double rifle drilling. The sides of the action remain fixed and wrap partially around the chambers.

Here they both are closed

Didn’t pay attention to the earlier photo of it. That is really really neat

Once the action is open, does the lever need to be operated to allow you to close it again? Or the side clips are kept open and out of the way to allow a snap close?

Seems like a very intricate and complicated system, but indeed very durable. I’ll keep an eye out if I ever see something like this again. Very interesting action.

Thanks for the identification @Moosmind, very much appreciated !

@Red Leg could this be yours (or at least very similar):
Yes, that is the same action, and @Moosemind is correct. It was called a Hercules action. Interesting to see it OU configuration.
