Allure of the Ruger No1

Thinking about calibres not available like 318 Westley Richards or 333 Jeffery ....or the last sanctuary of a rogue the 303Brit ..... Decisions Decisions ...but thank you for the advice very useful

Of those three choices:
- The 318 would likely not need extractor modification.
- The 333 Jeffery would ne a dimension change. Some cost
- The 303 would need to have the ejector re shaped. More cost, and you need a good smith.

If you want what I consider to be in you category of "not available"... Then I would unashamedly go for the 350 rigby. A true classic, that is a very well designed case. Loads up to 270gr, which in a Ruger no.1 would have the energy and penetration to take a buff. Loaded with 200-225gr bullets is flat and fast for NA sized game. Has that sexy Rigby name. Your extractor would take a little dimension change (less than 40 thou). But you would have a true medium bore.

@Just a dude in BC
As grand as the 350 Rigby is why go to that trouble and expense.
The 35 Whelen will do all the Rigby will with the same amount of class.
Loads up to 310gn at over 2,400fps for the big stuff
And
225s at 2,900fps for the longer range thump on not so big stuff but still big.

A friend has a 9.3x74. Interesting rifle. Has light contour 24”. Have shot a 1A in a 35 whelen. Recoil was interesting. A 350 rigby just has a marriage of Ruger and Rigby that’s intriguing. Would be fun in the 1s with a 26”.

I know it can be annoying, but in an effort to keep this thread on track... Experts suggest there is no point in getting a barrel to do a No.1 unless you have two actions, or are possibly planing a pistol in the same caliber.

What a great way to kick off our 2025 hunting season in South Africa.

This beautiful Impala ram was taken at just over 300 yards, took a few steps and toppled over.

We are looking forward to the next week and a half of hunting with our first client of the year.

Do you have any more copies of African Dangerous Game Cartridges, Author: Pierre van der Walt ? I'm looking for one. Thanks for any information, John [redacted]
