Well, my Ruger N°1 in 270WIN is with the gunsmith, to "Anglicize" it a bit. When the results are in, I'll make sure to post a couple of pictures.
Bedding the barrel, shortening the fore-end, slimming down the buttstock, a better trigger potentially and then whatever he can come up with. This will make a very fine first rifle for my daughters when they grow up. (and in the mean time I'll be able to enjoy it too)
Question in reference to the aforementioned Jard trigger. More suited for a varmint style or is it suitable for any and all? Addressing eye relief I’ve gotten along well with either a single offset, occasionally needed double offset. Do wish Ruger would recognize that 30mm optics need the offset love as well!
I have one of the 9.3x74r, and honestly found the gun was a bit light for the caliber, I looked around and could not find any in a heavier barrel. There have been tons of different variations made of the ruger no.1, but to my knowledge none of the 9.3s were ever done in the tropical weight barrel. Even the 450/400's did not get the Tropic barrel (except for a small limited run of about 100).Really want a No 1 in 9.3x57 because I have so much brass, dies, etc. Anyone out there know if the 9.3x62 or the 9.3x74R comes with a tropical weight barrel or standard weight?
You might try 275 Rigby or 7mm Mauser.Just picked up a Ruger No.1 in 7x57 in poor condition - any thoughts on calibre changes ?
If he uses 275 Rigby ammo he’ll have to shoot it with his pinky out…You might try 275 Rigby or 7mm Mauser.![]()
Was toying with 318WR - as I don't believe it was ever offered in that calibre ! But will see it is three months before it gets to me - just trying to get ahead of the curve and get a barrel ordered etcYou might try 275 Rigby or 7mm Mauser.![]()

I caliber changed a Ruger last year, so I can offer some advice. Which goes for anyone caliber changing a No.1Just picked up a Ruger No.1 in 7x57 in poor condition - any thoughts on calibre changes ?
Thinking about calibres not available like 318 Westley Richards or 333 Jeffery ....or the last sanctuary of a rogue the 303Brit ..... Decisions Decisions ...but thank you for the advice very usefulI caliber changed a Ruger last year, so I can offer some advice. Which goes for anyone caliber changing a No.1
Firstly: No caliber is really off the table. The #1 is a one sized fits all action. Be it a 7x57 or a 458 win mag, they are all the same action size. Since the sky is the limit, really think about what game you are going to hunt with it (how big is it), and what the geography looks like where you expect to hunt for that game (How far are you shooting).
Secondly: While the action is the same, the extractor is not. There are slight differences in shape to the extractors for rimmed and rimless. And while the shape is the same for the different rimless sizes, the dimensions are different between rimless for 7x57 that you have, and something with a fatter case like a 300h&h.
What those two points mean, is that while you CAN swap to virtually anything (within reason) it is more costly to swap from what you have, to a cal that has a magnum sized width, and there is another step up in cost from that, to go to something rimmed. Personally I would not go from rimless to rimmed unless you knew your smith had worked on a fair few falling blocks before.
So, my recommendation would be to stay in the lane of what you extractor is designed for, which is rimless designs for carts in the width range of 7x57. Which is quite a few things! Roughly speaking it is:
-Anything based off a 308
-Anything based off a 30-06
-A pile of cool euro stuff like 7x57, 7x64, 9.3x62
You can google for cals with a .470+- bolt face and find there are a tons of options. If you wanted to keep it classy for hunting in Africa, another 7x57 would be a great choice, unless you wanted it for taking plains game on the larger side (zeb, kudu, eland) in which case 9.3x62 would likely be a better choice. If you are just poking around for deer and such here in North America, or want it for someone a little recoil sensitive, you could even step down to a 6.5x55 (A cal which I love).
That being said I am a bit of an idiot, and have a great smith, so I converted mine from a 458 win mag to a 500 nitro with a custom chamber reamer to give me a ruger no.1 that is on par with a 505 gibbs in terms of power. Nothing is more hilarious than a single shot flinging 600gr bullets at 2250!
