Dear Fellow Hunters,
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) is asking for comments regarding the release of potentially personal and confidential information in records under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) related to the import and export of wildlife specimens, including hunting trophies. According to the Notice published in the Federal Register on November 1, 2016, the USFWS is currently in litigation with Humane Society International (HSI), which is challenging the agency’s decision to withhold personal and trade secret information contained in the agency’s Law Enforcement Management Information System (“LEMIS”) and requested by HSI under FOIA for the years 2002-2010, 2013, and 2014. LEMIS contains information submitted by importers and exporters and compiled by the agency, including personal information.
The USFWS is requiring anyone who wishes to object to the release of their information to submit comments by
November 22, 2016. The Notice, which includes instruction for submitting comments, can be found here:
https://www.fws.gov/le/businesses.html If you do not submit comments, the USFWS will assume you do not object to the release of your information.
