AH Get Together In Dallas During Dallas Safari Club (DSC) Convention 2018

Keep in mind, the dinner doesn't have to be BBQ. As I recall a TexMex dinner menu was available and probably more. I'm personally swamped at work and with other things for the next few weeks. Once my project at work is completed which will be soon, I can more easily look into it and get back on this.

@BWH, you know how to reach me directly, please feel free to do so with any ideas you may have for other venues.

The location of the first two AH dinners was close. 1/2 mile walk. It only accommodated 35-50.

The location for the next two dinners was a ten minute drive. Not easy to get to if you don't know the area and hard for people who have flown in for the show.

The location for the last two, Gilleys is good. 1/2 mile walk. This year we asked for more time at the venue. They were more than accommodating with the manager hanging around until we left around 1am, I believe. The food was average, but acceptable.

Phil has worked his butt off over the last few years to make this the event it has become. Jerome as well. Phil has done a great job in providing us an appropriate venue for our size that is close with acceptable food.

Phil, as far as I am concerned, do whatever is easiest for you. I will be there.

I absolutely appreciate all Phil and Jerome do and agree that it's a good deal for the price.
I will show up every time I can regardless as others have expressed.

Phil- just one question. Does Gilley's require we use their caterer ? In other words it is all or nothing from them or could we still rent venue and outsource food ?

Brother I'm with you I like that it's convenient and I like the feel but the BBQ is a disgrace to call Texas BBQ. In their defense I am a BBQ snob. Regardless I will be there no matter where it is.

Ha ha- I have also become a bit of a BBQ snob. With 5-6 Texas Top 50 places within 20 minutes of me, I take advantage every time I can. I have hit about 12 of the top 50 since the new list came out.

Never asked. But if they do, maybe we can have Memphis BBQ brought in, it's much better.....:A Stirring::A Outta:

Railhead in Ft Worth

I agree with @Royal27 .
I’m a bit of a BBQ snob as well, but this was my first AH dinner and all I really remember is the conversation and meeting great people I have followed on the site.
I went to Tejas de Brazil the next night and got my ribeye. Food was great but conversation was geared towards my wife’s day of shopping instead Africa. I would have rather been back at Gilleys talking to @Wheels or @jasyblood or discussing Namibia in 2019 with Jacques from @Kowas Hunting Safaris.
Just my 2€.

Not exactly "in close proximity to the convention center."
Right, I meant if they’ll let them cater.
Long short is I’m not really griping. I really like the convenience of Gilly’s, the atmosphere, I with y’all 100% in that the food is the least important part.

Gotcha, gimme 3-4 weeks and I'll have more time to explore the options.

I don't believe that Gilley's is going to allow outside catering. If they did Pecan Lodge is in Deep Ellum not far way and a top 50. Railhead in Ft. Worth will good is not a top 50. And quite frankly Mexican Food north of San Antonio is well, just not very good.

G'day folks, I just saw a farcebook post to the effect that Dallas no longer wants the NRA convention business. Can one of you eminent gentlemen check this out, and its possible ramifications for future AH conventions please?
If true, I'm sure I will not be the only person interested ...

Hi Geoff, the acting Dallas mayor made the request this morning. The NRA said no. They have had the contract for the convention for a very long time. As far as it affecting DSC next year. No information on that yet that I am aware of. The pencil pushers said that even they could legally cancel it, it would cost Dallas around $40,000,000. NRA is expecting 80,000 people. (most are from Texas I am sure) What ever happens it's going to be interesting!

G'day mate; interesting indeed! I'm working my brain overtime figuring out how I can get there. I'd like to combine the attendance with some train travel (a great way to meet folks) to visit places I missed last time (1980, WAY overdue!!!) Wishing you and yours a brilliant 2018.

Plan it, DSC is contracted with the convention center there for quite a few years out.

Wouldn't hardly be right to have DSC in San Antonio, El Paso or Amarillo!!!!!

Already been in touch with my travel agent, and will "hit up" one of my favourite nieces, who is a Virgin Airlines tour booking specialist. The second option gives me the chance to talk about her gorgeous little one-year-old daughter. Am I right in thinking late January?

For 2019 it is 17, 18, 19 and 20 January for DSC.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
