Afton Guest House

Good to see them stepping up and fixing the problems. Those things mean a lot.

I just wanted to follow up with the community that I am at the Afton house right now and things went flawless with pick up, SAPs permit, the room and just finished a heck of a great steak dinner. I would highly recommend them and will be staying again next time I need to overnight in Joberg.

Great to here, only stayed their 2 time ,but it was great. Forrest

Definitely new management and not the old Afton House atmosphere. Mr X is by far the best!

Any more update and feedback regarding Afton House would be appreciated.
Any alternative suggestions?

Our Cape Town based travel agent recommended African Rock Hotel (http://www.africanrockhotels.com/) and it's become our go-to place when over-nighting in Joburg. We've stayed there several times and Calvin is always waiting in the airport lobby to pick us up.

Stayed with Afton a couple of years back; would do it again in an instant. As for Mr X, smooth does not do him justice.

Can't speak for recent times but we stayed there in early '13. Compared to the Citi Hotel, it was too much of a hassle. Me and my buddy were packed in to a van with many other hunters, charged 25 for dinner that wasn't that good. Been to SA three times since and am a proponent of staying at the hotel, no van ride, walk across the street, great breakfast, guns stay in the room with you. My opinion: less hassle and moving around.

Thank you very much for your positive feedback. We appreciate you all keeping us updated. It is valuable.

I've done both routes. I do like the ease a pushing my own cart to the hotel. However, If you are feeling social, nothing like a room full of hunters to chat with though.

We do the meet and greet with Gracy Travel. They have permanent employees working at the airport to assist with firearms and when it comes to going across the street to the hotel, all one needs to do is follow them. They push the carts with all your gear on them. Same deal in the morning on the flight out. Right there with you checking your rifles out of Joburg and escort you to security for your next flight. Return gets the same service, don't leave you until you're ready for security check. Treat you like a rock star.:D

I've done the City Lodge/Gracy deal and it went very well. I've also done Africa Sky Guest House 3 times. Obviously City Lodge is more convenient, but after the very long flight I like being able to walk around the nice grounds at AS,. With a filet mignon steak, great breakfast, and a few cold brews all included in the competitive price, It makes it a real bargain IMO.

I've stayed there twice- most recently in March and couldn't speak more highly of them! Mr X does a phenomenal job- he still messages me occasionally on FB to keep in touch . Engee was always very timely on both trips. I look forward to staying there again the next time over!

I will concur regarding Mr.X. He does a great job. I will use his services again for my next safari.

I agree

I booked a meet and greet for June 25 th, same thing no replies and a no show for the meet and greet. Because I already had a permit SAPs wouldn't give me another. After me and SAPs phoning I waited over an hour for Mister X to show up with my permit. The new owner is not listening to his staff, they where telling me they where given wrong dates and stuff.

I've always used Gracy Travel for booking flights, SAPS permits, hotel reservations (City Lodge in the airport) and meet & greet services for every trip to Africa. The only exceptions for staying anywhere other than City Lodge in the airport were when PH and tracker have picked me up at airport and we've stayed at a separate location of PH's choosing away from airport. NEVER an issue and always a relaxed /no stress experience.

afton house twice and city hotel once, both good, afton the best, will try africa sky next on recommendation of my ph.

We stayed at Afton house on 19th of July this year. The driver Marius picked us up at the airport and delivered us there. He was great. From there it was down hill. Without going into the details, it was not a good experience. We will not stay there ever again, and I can not recommend it.

PLM please what happened as I just stayed there a few weeks ago?

By the time you guys get to the Afton House or African Sky, I'm out of the shower and snoozing at Citi Lodge. :p:D

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
Found out the trigger word in the end... It was muzzle or velocity. dropped them and it posted.:)

2,822fps, ES 8.2
This compares favorably to 7 Rem Mag. with less powder & recoil.

I know that this thread is more than a year old but as a new member I thought I would pass along my .280AI loading.
I am shooting F Open long range rather than hunting but here is what is working for me and I have managed a 198.14 at 800 meters.
That is for 20 shots. The 14 are X's which is a 5" circle.
