AfricanSky vs Afton Safari Lodge

@Kevin Peacocke has an excellent post under A day in JNB. In particular visiting curio shops, Africa furniture with paintings and dining. Sorry I don’t remember exact posting name but should be easy to find
The OP was inquiring about which accommodation to stay at for two days in JNB to acclimate and reset for jet lag after arriving. Not my question ;)

A couple of days early? Are you renting a car or relying on lodge/hotel shuttle? Is your PH/outfitter picking you up to hunt or are you flying out of OR Tambo to final destination? Reason I ask is wandering around town on foot is not recommended so one day may be plenty hanging around lodge security grounds. Might ask your outfitter for recommendation.
We are flying in on late on Wednesday and our ph will pick us up on Friday. So I guess it's a couple nights and really one day.

Has anyone stayed at both or either one. My wife and I are going in June and are thinking about flying in a couple days before our hunt. Just to get use to the time change and incase of flight delays. Thank you all for all of the information.
Stayed at Africa Sky on my 3rd Safari. Great service and they also will do your rifle paperwork and have a guy meet you and walk it through. My flight was delayed out of Newark several hours, they met me and still had dinner waiting for my son and I even with late arrival.
Could not recommend more, great service.

Definitely would recommended Africa Sky. Have stayed there for the last 4 years, the food and wine are very good. This past June my rifle was left at Joburg airport when I arrived in Atlanta. I sent Gilbert a pic of my baggage claim and he tracked it down at the airport and had it on the next flight. I can’t say enough about there people!

Word of advice. If you are using Booking dot com or similar to make your reservation, there is another place called African Sky Guest House in JoBurg. It is not this place. You want AfricaSky Boutique Hotel

agree but also he is coming in “a couple of days early”. Don’t relish just sitting in a hotel for two days

We overnighted @africa Sky and used Gilbert to assist with guns. Good food, they had chef and dining room staff stay late as our flight from ATL delayed over 2 hours, other hunters on board also. Clean room, friendly staff. Gilbert very helpful.

My wife and I stayed at Africa Sky in 2022. They came, took charge of my rifles, transported us the hotel, and kept the guns safe while we went up to Victoria Falls and Chobe National Park for a couple of days before the safari. My wife hadn't been to Africa before and I wanted to show her the falls and some of the animals outside of a hunting area. It also gave us a chance to get used to the the change. We met some other hunters that were coming or going, and had a good time.

Jennifer at Travel Express recommended them and made the arrangements. I can't tell you anything about Afton House, but I can say that I would stay at Africa Sky again.

Stayed at Afton earlier this year. Overnight, went great for us. Had them do my rifle permit, airport pickup etc. Went great. The place was nice, slept well, great food. No complaints. Will try African Sky eventually.

I've stayed at the airport hotel, Africa Sky and Afton numerous times. All have positives to offer. Africa Sky and Afton will both help you clear guns and the food is good at both. Gilbert is one of the most helpful, polite, interesting people in the hospitality business I have met in Africa. I have spent the most time with Africa Sky because of Gilbert. He's a great guy and knows everyone at JNB.

I've stayed at both as well and echo what @WAB stated - Africa Sky is really hard to beat and you won't be disappointed. If you are traveling with weapons and are fortunate enough to have Gilbert by your side shepherding you through O.R. Tambo, you will know exactly what I'm talking about when it is all said and done. Good luck!
Gilbert for the win !

We recommend Africa Sky to all our clients.

I've stayed at Afton with family and friends. They helped out with the rifle transfers, and made us a late dinner when our flight was delayed out of Atlanta. Great time. Never stayed at Africa Sky (yet).
