African Hunting Targets

I decided that shooting plain targets was getting a bit boring, so I got out the paint brushes and made some targets of some african animals.
I am not an artist, but found some pics on the internet, drew a grid over them, drew the grid on some sheets of MDF and then drew the animals. I got some small test pots of paint and got stuck in. Each target is probably 1-2 hours of work. It will be a bit of a shame to shoot them though.
For some scale, the zebra target board is 1.2 m tall

Yep 10-11 March in Kurow again. Stepping it up a bit this year, going to have a moving target and will set some animal targets up in a jungle lane style course. Will have my painted targets and another guy has sourced some animal targets from South Africa. Will be a few wallabies bite the dust as well.

I'd say you are a better artist than you think. I'd have a hard time hitting the stick figures in can't draw straight.

Here, at Kowas Hunting Safaris in Namibia, we take the clients to the shooting range to make sure that the rifles are sighted in and on target from a solid bench. Then, we take each client on a 1 mile long walking course, where they shoot 5 2D targets from the shooting sticks (uphill, downhill, crouched, etc. and with different distances). It gives them great experience and practice on where to shoot and what works best for them from the shooting sticks. After each target, we discuss shot placement on the target.

The 2D Target Examples are below.... I usually print them life size. It's not that expensive, and it lasts quite a long time since we cover the holes, but no matter what, its worth it.... A lot less wounded animals!

This I like !! You practice quite a few quartering to shots. Is that because the majority of your shots are from that angle ?

Not really buck wild.....

Why we do a lot of quartering to shots, is because it is a difficult shot and quite a few animals has been wounded with shots like that. So practicing it helps a bit! Besides, we practice the "hard" shots, then the broad-side shot seems easier!

Well we got to use the targets this weekend. Was great fun, and the animal targets made a big difference to the enjoyment of the weekend.

Stug that looks like a great practice course. Was your charging lion on a sled being pulled by something? When I committed to my first safari, I made a life-size kudu target from plywood with an AR500 steel plate for the vitals. Now that I'm close to committing to my second safari I need to come up with some type of buffalo target. While I'm hoping to avoid a real charge, a charging target would be interesting.

Yep, couple of cut off skis with small wobble wheels/rollers. Wire cable attached to a car. At the first shot the driver started driving at about 20km/h. Probably could have gone a bit faster.
There was 50yd between target and shooter, we measured 40yd ahead of car so the driver knew when to stop.
