Friends,
I see a lot of WTB book requests on our forum. There are some great deals on books out there, particularly if you don't mind them as non-collector condition (Fine/Excellent/Good condition).
Abebooks.com is the "ebay of used books". They provide the fraud protection between the buyer and the tens of thousands of independent book dealers. You search for the books you want, search by price, and buy the cheapest one.
Some of my favorite "deals" on the book market include these:
Pondoro Taylor's "African Rifles and Cartridges" has been reprinted dozens of times. The Wolf Press edition from the 1990s is leatherbound with nice silk ribbons. They go for around $30 or so.
Gunsmithing by Dunlaf was part of a leatherbound series I think the NRA put out in the 1980s. Its a lovely book and its about worthless on the used market.
Elmer Keith's books were leatherbound and reprinted as part of that same NRA series, I've seen them for $70 one week and for $8 the next.
The American Shotgun by Askins is a great book. It had a huge first printing a hundred years ago. A first edition sells for the same price as a Happy Meal.
For my trips abroad, I buy the cheapest, roughest condition copies of Capstick, Ruark, and others in dastardly condition. At the end of the flight, I leave them in Africa at the safari camp for the next guy to enjoy.
Of general interest, Audubon did a HUGE set of books in the 1990s as a "once a month by mail" offering. All leatherbound, gilded end pages, silk ribbons, they are reprints of every field guide they ever did, about 50 or more in total. Shells, Weather, Dozens on Birds, some on areas of the world, Moths, Butterflys, Insects, Trees of all sorts. Some people want $1000 or more for the whole set, but you can pick them up in ones and twos on the used market for very cheap and build up your collection.
Disclaimer: I have no involvement with buyers or sellers in this instance, just passing on how to get even more books on our favorite topics for cheap money.
