Advice on waterproof bag

I’m planning the second trip halibut fishing with my son in Alaska this summer. I am making some adjustments to this trip, attempting to improve the experience.

What suggestions do you all have for a bag I can take out fishing on the ocean in drizzling rain that will keep items dry?

I am thinking of a bag a little smaller than a carry on size. Also, hoping to avoid the heavy vinyl style. Preferably something packable/crushable.

Suggestions please.

Many years ago (before I was married) I did a lot of canoeing I had a water proof bag. (It was coated ripstop with a plastic interior bag.) Unfortunately, I don’t remember the brand. But I would think if you pick up a copy of Canoe magazine, you might find some advertisements for some.

When I used to whitewater canoe I used old gi waterproof laundry bags, recently I have been using some I got off of Amazon, search for waterproof motorcycle bags, I think they were about 40.00, kept my gear dry in many downpours while traveling, if I get a chance will dig them out and get the manufacturer name, for my camera gear I used a padded 30 cal ammo box. Earth-Pak and the smaller ditty bags were sea to summit.

I would put sweatshirts, phone, gloves, small items like that.

You need a white water rafting bag. This type of bag will even float if it ends up in the water. They come in various sizes. If you are a member of REI they'll have them, or even check out Amazon

Rubber exterior...roll down tops.
Ive used them for over 40 years in extreme wet conditions where wet gear is likely not a survivable option...Alaska float trips...the Yukon...Caribou drop camps...fly-in/drop off fishing excursions.
Never a failure...not once.

I second the Kuiu taku. I removed the shoulder straps from mine. Also works well being packed into a wilderness area by Scott CWO’s packers.

I have several of the larger & heavier SealLine-style vinyl ones that the OP doesn't want that I use for storing gear I'm extra cautious about protecting. For the rest of my stuff, I use the smaller & lighter Wildwater Bags from Osprey Backpacks. They're not designed to be submerged but based on the fact that I can't seem to squeeze air out of them, I have a high level of confidence that they're waterproof enough to float if the rolltop is clasped. With the shoulder strap, they're convenient to carry & they come in a variety of sizes.

I also have a water-resistant, top-loading 25-liter Mountain Hardwear Camp 4 rucksack with zero external zippers or pockets. All of the storage compartments are internal with a nice large protective flap over the top. It would do a good job of repelling drizzle & spray but would not do well if it actually got dunked. I like the pack but the clasp needs tension to guarantee it stays secure.

Both have different designs and fabric weights. Also, you can just use plastic bag liners (trash compactor bags are preferred) in existing packs.

you can purchase waterproof bags, backpacks, and sling bags on Amazon for a lot less money. Of course, you won't receive the same warranty or customer support that comes with bags bearing well-known brands.
