Advice on caliber selection for Zambia trip

Scott as your 300 wsm is light go buy a nice .300 win mag ...as you should get at least one new rifle for the hunt...and as much as I hate to say it....the .375 as your father will be using it...so
Nice new .300 win mag
And the 375 H&H thing :X3: :E Big Grin: :D Beers:

Geez talk about duplication! Another .30 cal?? I already have two .30 cal rifles! I figured you would at least recommend a .416 Rigby or a proper double rifle!

That's like three .375s too many, especially if you like your Lott. ;)

Well I consider the Lott a bit much for PG I guess…

All good advice, I am just partial to the .338WM, and of course the .375HH for your father.

Yes, I am also a .338 fan. Same trajectory as my old .30-06 but with more punch.

Several decades ago I enjoyed hunting all over Zambia during two wonderful safari totaling ninety days taking pretty much all species of game available legally to hunt. I am sure much has changed since then but we did cover the whole country. I used four calibers hard, 300 Win Mag, 338 Win Mag, 375 H &bH, and 416 Rigby. Never took more than two at a time on either trip. They all worked great. If I were to go today would take a 416 Rigby and a 300 Win Mag. I would be happy taking an 06 and a 375 as they would work fine. I used Nosler Partition 200 grain in my 300, 400 grain bullets in the 416 and 300 grain in the 375. Today would use 180 TTSX in the 300, 300 grain TTX in the 375, and 400 grain TSX in the 416..
as an aside, two years ago I was in Tanzania for my 81st birthday. I had heard so many awesome things about new 6.5 calibers I took a new custom 6.5x284 for plains game, and a 416 Remington for Mbogo. With the 6.5 I took ten animals bushpig up to Roan. Five with 140 grain Swift A Frame and five with 140 grain Berger LR. All were one shot kills animals all hit properly. Killed four buff with the 416 Rem. If I go again will return to my standbys, 300 Win Mag and 416 Rigby. Just feel more confident with them. Just an old hunter rambling. I have been a very lucky man. Kindest Regards

Wow! Congrats on some awesome safaris! Great to see you’re still hunting in your 80s. Thanks for weighing in.

Oh I don’t know, it’s all I had on a Mozambique Safari. After the buff was in the salt I took bushpig, warthog and bushbuck with the Lott. It seemed to work just fine!

It would definitely mow down some papyrus but I don’t think it’s the best at 300+ yards in the swamps. You’re just trying to confuse me even more! Lol.

Did your outfitter say how long to expect the shots? A .375 is good to 300 yards, more if you were to take a lighter loaded mono, say a 250gr, or even a 235 Raptor at 3000fps gives you a 5” MBPR of 310 yards. Unless you were told to expect long shots, I’d leave the long range set ups at home.

I think I have a good plan for caliber and rifle selection for my safari in Zambia in late July and early August but wanted to see what you guys think. I will be hunting and traveling to three different areas to get the three lechwe species (Kafue, red and black) as well as sitatunga, roan, sable, puku, waterbuck, bushbuck, etc… plus I have reserved a buffalo for my father. I’m taking my parents on their first safari, mostly as observers. We are hunting Kasonso Busanga GMA bordering Kafue NP for most of the above species and then the Bangweulu Swamp for black lechwe. The “swamp species” such as the lechwe and sitatunga will be hunted in the open country of the swamps in these areas and shots could be a bit longer than encountered on most African safaris.

Rifles/calibers I am considering from my safe:

1. Tuebor Precision 6.5 GAP with titanium action with carbon wrapped barrel, Nightforce turret scope and 140gr Berger Hybrid bullets. Shot my Marco Polo sheep at 550 yards with this rifle. It’s a .300 RUM necked down to a 6.5. I was thinking of using this rifle in the swamps for the lechwe and sitatunga because shots can get long. I have shot this rifle out to 1500 yards but would never shoot an animal at more than half that distance. My PH owns a 6.5 and is impressed with the performance on smaller PG species so he is fine with my setup for the swamp hunting.

2. Custom Winchester M70 in .300 WSM with a Leupold scope with Premier Reticle dots out to 600 yards. This is my lightweight mountain rifle for most of my sheep hunting in North America. It’s very lightweight and hard to hold steady without a solid rest. Sighted in with 165 gr Nosler Accubond bullets.

3. Custom Winchester M70 in .338 WM with a Leupold scope with Premier Reticle dots out to 600 yards. This is the rifle I have used for most of my PG hunting and a lot of NA hunts. It has a heavy but fluted stainless Krieger barrel without iron sights. Very accurate for a medium bore caliber. Sighted in with 225 gr Swift A-Frame bullets.

4. Whitworth Interarms Model X in .375 H&H Mag with beautiful wood, iron sights, barrel band sling swivel with Leupold VX6 2-12x scope with adjustable illuminated reticle in Talley QD rings. Sighted in with Barnes 270 gr LRX bullets. I thought this would be great for PG and would work just fine for my dad’s buffalo. I know 300 gr bullets are normally recommended for buffalo but the 270 gr would work. This is a new rifle for me.

5. CZ550 Safari .458 Lott with several upgrades by Wayne at AHR with iron sights and a Leupold V6 2-12x scope in Talley QD rings. Composite stock and cerakote coating on all metal. This is my back up rifle for brown bear guiding and I have also shot two buffalo with it in Mozambique. Sighted in with 500 gr Barnes TTSX.

For the swamp hunting, I was thinking of taking the Tuebor 6.5 and for everything else, the Whitworth .375. Or should I take the .338 and .375? Or the .338 and .458? Or the .375 and .458? Or just the .375? I only want to take two rifles. My dad has never shot the .458 Lott.

Your thoughts?
One man..
One gun...take the 375

Is it working?

Long shots are pretty likely in the swamps.

How long would it take you to retrieve the 30-06?
06 and 375 would get it done for me. Any of the .300's and the 375 will keep you smiling, as well as your taxidermist!

Scott. I would take the 375 for sure and what ever rifle you are the most comfortable and shoot the best with.

I’m kinda in same boat. Taking 458 Lott for Buff. But have not decided on which 300 win mag (have 2 of them) or maybe 308 (have 3 of them) for plains game and culling rifle.

Take it easy I was only warming up , and leading you slowly along the path to those ....but yeah ditch the 375 thing and get a 416 Rigby :E Big Grin: :A Thumbs Up::D Beers:

And I was talking about the tall slender 300 win mag...not one of those short fat dumpy things... :E Big Grin:

Dang, I guess you were just getting started! Lol

Thanks and yes, taking both the .338 and .375 seems a bit repetitive. When buffalo was more of the focus on my previous safaris, I took the .458 Lott for buffalo and the .338 for PG. I don’t really see the need for the Lott on this trip.
It’s fun getting to choose.
