Former Miss Kansas, Theresa Vail pleaded guilty Wednesday to a count of taking a bear without a permit. A charge of falsifying information about the bear tag was dismissed, in exchange for Vail agreeing to testify, if asked, against the guides who were with her on the hunt that day.

In a conference call with the court in western Alaska, Vail's attorney said it was Vail's first time hunting big game, and she was using professional guides. Vail called it an "inadvertent mistake" when she shot a female grizzly, while trying to finish killing another bear when it didn't go down after the first shot.
Vail's attorney told the court Vail wanted to report the mistake, but the guide service instead came up with a plan to drop a tag by plane into the field to go with the second dead bear. Vail then falsified information that the tag was obtained before the hunt.
Her attorney says Vail was encouraged to participate in the scheme by the guides, and that she was the one who reported the accidental kill after the hunt.
The court fined Vail $750 and ordered her to pay part of the $1,300 in restitution. She will also be on probation for a year.
Vail told the judge by phone, she should have been more forthright in reporting the inadvertent shooting and promised he wouldn't see her name in court again, unless she was called to testify.
The hunt last spring was filmed for Vail's television show that focuses on the outdoors, but the episode was never broadcast.
