Added aimpoint to Krieghoff

Hi Gentelmen, I’m new to doubles. I bought a slightly used two barrel-set Krieghoff classic a little while back. I was able to regulate the 9.3x74R barrels with about 1.5 turns of the adjustment of the “wedge.” - fantastic. Now to the 500/416 barrels …as you know, ammo and bullets are troublesome to find. The only fodder I could get (at non gouging prices) was some Hornady 400DGX loaded ammunition; okay so be it. Much to my surprise they regulated “okay” for me….right barrel was ~2”right and ~1” high at 50….just under 2300fps average

In this process I discovered my eyes have abandoned me, and not useful for iron sights, anymore. After a couple weeks of internet searches and waiting I was able to get a Merkel Aimpoint mount from a UK optics firm….mill it to fit the Krieghoff, and mounted an Aimpoint. I’m delighted. I take it to the range, and now the right barrel is 3-4” left and about 1.5-2” lower than the left! They are crossing now!

I can hand load, so will start lowering the velocity with the same bullets (400DGX bonded), and see if I can get them back in the same zip code….

Is it normal for the regulation to change this drastically with the addition of an RMR? Or is something else afoot?

Adding a RDS should not affect where the bullets impact. Unless something like screws from the mount are touching the barrels some how.

You can try it again without the RDS and see what happens.

How many screws are holding that mount on? If that mount is not 100% solid. That will be your problem, I would double check every screw in that whole system. The 4 that hold the aimpoint on and the rest the attach the mount to the rib.

4 for the Aimpoint, and 2 for the mount. One of the screws is hard to get at. I’ll double check that

Looking at that mount, have a feeling something is not 100% tight.

I would also add that if you're having to hold your face off the stock to see through the new sight, it could also affect the POI. Doubles can be finicky creatures. Any little change can make a big difference.

Very true! A RMR would also sit alot lower too.

I have used a Trijicon RMR on my 500/416 Kgun. I am using the RM58 mount that clamps the the rear scope base. I found with the Hornaday ammo it is very inconsistent. One box will shoot fantastic (2 in 4 shot group at 55meters) the next box is the size of a soft ball. So I jsut used the hornaday factory round for familiarization. I developed a pair of loads with 400gr Aframes and CEB solids that shoot under 2 ins and the same distance. With irons and are even tighter when I mount the RMR. If you are interested I can give you my load data so you have a starting point to work with.

I think the rib on the Krieghoff may be a half-millimeter or so higher than the rib on a Merkel. I base that on that the mount is for a Merkel and the angular gap from back to front on the mounting surface of the mount. This may or may not fail during recoil since the recoil forces are moving the rifle straight back with a fraction of upward force added. If the mount under the sight is not mating with the rib, I think eventually the rear screw that fastens the mount to the rib will shear off.

I would either add a shim between the mount and the rib, or have a machinist/gunsmith mill the forward bottom surface of the mount so that both mounting surfaces mate to the Krieghoff rib.

Further, ensure the back for the Krieghoff rib is mated to the vertical edge of mount as a recoil lug. This is gunsmithing territory.

You are exactly correct. I had to remove some additional material, and it cantilevers correctly now. Re-bluing as I type, and the will reinstall.

I’ll keep on the look out for the correct mount PN, and replace this modified one as soon as I can. Thanks

That is a problem…ironically…not seeing that is why I mounted it in the first place

Thanks everyone for the quick help. I removed more material, and have the mount cantilevered like I think it was intended. This was definitely wrong before, and I hope it gets back into reasonable regulation.

That would not effect regulation, you unfortunately did not have a solid mount. So it was not holding zero. Hopefully you are good to go, looks much better now!

Hi my gunsmith said kieghoff specify a certain toque for screws to not change point of impact. Must be tight as I undid mine on the 470 to put red dot in off my Merkel 450/400. And the screws were bloody tight. Broke a t15 torque Wrench getting dovetail piece off.
