About to lose my mind

Enjoy the anticipation and the preparation it really is a big part of the experience. Read AH, find that 375 H&H you need, books on shot placement, safari clothes too. Don't forget the Courtney boots that are fairly mandatory...Actually, the wait is great for stimulating the economy!;)

i watch the countdown app on my iPhone, its painful to look but i set it up over a year ago, and 400 days away was bad now its 53 days 19 hours 25 min and 17 sec away

53 days 19 hours 24 min and 26 sec

As far as the waiting, I've been booked for almost two years and my trip is in May. Talk about going crazy!

I tried to focus on my gear list for most of the time, trying to purchase something every month for the trip. Also, I spent more than enough time at the range. Getting all paperwork together, contacting the USDA, USFWS and customs with questions, checking my passport, luggage, etc. All helps you pass the time. And don't forget about researching airfare and travel laws with weapons. This will take most of your time.

These last two months though are hell as I'm squared away and ready to go.

This is great advice! I found that the Netherlands did want the application too early but also required lead time to get it processed.

Welcome to AH! This trip of "a lifetime", will be planned again on the flight home! 2018 is right around the corner!!

Welcome to AH !

Congratulations on your Africa trip and welcome to AH!

Congratulations. Africa will be everything and then some. Shoot straight, slow down and just plain enjoy it. There's no place like it. Take lot's of pictures.

Welcome. There clearly is a pattern among Africa hunting enthusiasts. The anticipation for the first trip, often cited as a "trip of a lifetime" if brutal. But, you then you quickly find that it is nothing compared to the waiting, saving, and scheming to get back for your second trip. And, of course, how do you display the trophies. The hidden costs of an Africa trip moi t over time, but I've found that every dollar was worth it. I'm heading back for my second trip this summer (a year after my first trip) and am certain it won't be my last.

Good luck with your hunt. We will look forward to your hunt report.

Welcome.

"The only man I envy is a hunter going to Africa for the first time, -C.J. McElroy"

I envy you, half the fun is the planning that goes into the Safari, I spent a lot of time reading all I could on hunting in Africa. I researched African calibers and purchased my first safari rifle, then spent days at the range trying to figure out what worked best. Then I had to buy a new gun case for travel with the firearms. Bought new hunting boots as mine are made for hunting northern Alberta in November. So I had to walk them in as not to have issues with them on Safari. Also had to look into new binos. Time goes fast, enjoy the process.
Good luck and enjoy the ride.

Good advice. I need to start a detailed list of equipment and to does.

Good luck on your trip.

Thanks Dennis. Your work is amazing. Sounds like my BIL has already sent you a message. He's pretty excited too.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes.

You can try not thinking about it. :D Since that is doomed to failure keep tweaking your kit and reading but some books.

Hello all...I am the aforementioned brother-in-law that is also anxiously waiting for the next 15 months or so to pass by. I too am enjoying the forums and trying to soak up all the info I can get my hands on. I'm sure I'll be back with what I have no doubt will be stupid questions over the next year and few months.

No stupid questions here. If you don't know, there's probably someone else with the same question.
Welcome to the Obsession Show! Uuummmm, I mean welcome to the forums! I like this family tradition you're starting

@LegalEagle has a 4 yr old son and I have a 2.5 yr old that we hope to include in this "family tradition" one day (I.e., excuse, I mean reason, for us to make another trip to Africa).

As others have said, practice, practice, practice, don't try to cram too many animals in to one trip and don't get your heart set on one specific animal. Africa will give you what you want most but not all of the time. Study your shot placement photos, they are on this site. Welcome to the site but remember, there is NO KNOWN CURE for the urge to return. ;)
