A question about side by side shotguns & rifled slugs

Well I'd have had to buy it first anyway and I think I would've been hesitant to rechamber it if I had bought it. So ultimately no worries!
The 9.3x72R and the 9.3x74R are VERY different cartridges. The former is little more than a somewhat anemic 30-30 while the latter will kill cape buffalo. Reaming out the chamber of a drilling barrel from one to the other would leave it dangerously thin. The 72R's are also typically older guns not proofed or built to handle something like a 74R.

I really do wonder why,i had a Lyons & Lyons Invisible Paradox Shotgun,it was a Sidelock SxS,was bought in 1950s, basically a Trade Gun,whatever little info i could get it was built for Army Navy, used to gimme very good groups shooting Slugs till 50 yards, excellent shooting Shot from 7.5 to LGs. Regarding shooting slugs out of a Choke barrel,Slugs here are 85% Lead and 15% Antimony, the German - Spanish one we shot also the same.Overusing Slugs might hurt Extra Full or Turkey Choke Barrel, but the ones with Half Choke, would it????
A paradox really isn't designed for "slugs." They use a "bullet" of specific weights with which the gun is regulated. For instance, my pre-WWI William Evans Paradox will put 4 rounds LxR/LxR under 3-inches at 100 yards. It also shoots perfect modified patterns with number 6 shot. I have used it to roll wart hogs for leopard bait and create a large pile of sand grouse from the same waterhole one afternoon in Namibia. Ross Seyfried recreated the original, paper hulled 740 gr load for this gun.

William Evans Paradox 12 bore

Conical Bullets in Brass Cases was the original loads for Paradox, here in my country, reloading is now prohibited.Getting the same specially ordered is a very expensive proposition. We guys improvised.

No mine was a Side Lock,Hammer less, think they bought if for Rs 80,along with a 470 N.E by Rigby which was priced at Rs 1250/- a princely sum for those days.Love these Old Ads,Dad picked up a 500/450 by H&H in exchange for a Murphy Richards Toaster.
By the way, you wouldn’t happen to know anybody in India who’s got a double rifle which they might be willing to sell, do you? I have a friend in India who’s looking to buy one. The only criteria is that it must be .450 caliber or larger.

@Red Leg would you care to show a picture of one of you parodox cartridges? I Don think I have ever seen one.
Ross's loads, which faithfully replicate the form and loading of the original are on the right. That is actually a 735 gr "bullet." On the left are the Holland & Holland loads for their current bespoke production Paradox. As you can see they decided to maintain a modern form factor. Both are 2.5 inch cases. These will do the same 3-inch group at fifty yards that Ross's will do at a hundred. The old guys knew a thing or two.

Here’s an original 750Gr brass cased Holland & Holland Paradox “Bullet” cartridge in my collection.

Some, particularly the earliest Foster loads, used a brass case. By the time the term "Paradox" was available to the trade after 1900, the crimped paper case was in general use.

So we are of the opinion that regular shooting of rifled slugs in a side by side, particularly a modern coach gun, won't harm it.
Thanks.

I would never shoot a slug through a British game gun regardless of when it was made. Most Continental guns were designed to handle them. Just make sure you are dealing with 67 or 70mm chambers. I would assume modern SxS's, built for the litigious American consumer, would also handle them without any issues.

There was a 500 N.E by Greener up for sale some time back, really dont know the status as of now.will check and let you know.

I posted this over on the double rifle forum, but feel like this is a good place as well! I recently won this rifle in an online auction, waiting for delivery at the moment…it is a Siace (Italian) 12 gauge fully rifled double barrel, 3” chambers. Pics below.

I’ve also owned an original H&H Paradox hammer gun in the past…loaded my shells identical to Red Leg with the federal paper shells with the crimp rolled in with a brass rod. Great accuracy with fosbery style slugs and Unique. I also got decent IC groups with #6 shot, but only using fiber wads. Just didn’t like the hammers, so I let it go. I may pick up a hammer-less version in the future if I can get it at a reasonable price.

Good thing I didn't try it, then. I probably wouldn't have done anything to it, anyway, and thought it heresy to do so.

I have enough trouble bringing myself to consider converting a sporterized 03A3 to .308 Norma as a "What if the US Army built up a sniper rifle to compete with the USMC Winchester 70s?" project. Building the rifle, yes. Converting calibre, less so.

Interesting gauge rifle! Connecticut Shotgun does something similar in a 20. Look forward to hearing how it shoots.

Yes, the RBL rifle version…I was actually contemplating the purchase of one of these, and then the Siace popped up in my auction feed. Was able to pick it up for less than half the cost of the RBL rifle.

I’ll be sure to post shooting results, hopefully I can get it to regulate with something!

Red Leg, how did you achieve the particular crimp on the Siefried rounds and what is the intended function?
