With Alliant RL-17 being absent for several years, I attempted to find a substitute. 17 has been a magical powder for 9.3x74R with mid-weight bullets, giving outstanding accuracy and velocity.

RL-16 is advertised as being in the same burn range but more temp stable. It is another double-base extruded powder like RL-17. Quickload doesn't seem to handle this one very well in the 9.3x74R without a little tweaking (as outlined in their readme file) because of the case geometry. Ultimately, I discovered RL-16 has less bulk density than RL-17 and you can't get enough in the case for mid-weight bullets. Even with heavily compressed loads, reaching peak velocity/pressure wasn't possible with the 242gr Hammer, though it's not far off. A heavy crimp was required which I think hurt accuracy.

Next up I tried CFE223 with the 242 Hammer. Very dense and only about 91% case fill. Velocities were all over the place though, up to 50 fps extreme spread. Normally I wouldn't care but in a double rifle that can be precisely regulated at longer ranges (Blaser S2), it matters.

Where RL-16 really shines is the heavies. It has about 100% load density with the 325 gr Norma Oryx, with an average velocity of 2280 fps and standard deviation of 6 fps for 20 shots from both barrels combined. Accuracy was superb, sub-MOA.

I use magnum primers with all loads now in the 9.3x74R just for simplicity.

I will caveat that none of these combinations appears in any reloading manual that I've found. I used several sources of published data, QuickLoad, Garmin radar, and combined all that with some common sense. The pressures should be below MAP for the 9.3x74R but it hasn't been tested by me.

I see you have a Blaser S2. Do you have multiple barrels for it? I have been looking for a barrel set.

In the 286-320gr bullets I use Ramshot hunter. haven't loaded any of the light bullets 270gr and under for my doubles. But in my #1 ramshot big game works well.

No, I just got the gun and unfortunately only came with the 9.3 which IMO is the best of the "small" offerings. Would love to have one in 500/416

I agree. I have been looking for a barrel set every where, but I can’t find any for sale.

My go to powder for the 9.3x74R has been AR2209 (sold in the US as H4350). This is with 286g projectile and a velocity around 2250 fps.

I had been trying to find a load for my No 1 and was getting so so results. I threw in some Lapua factory and realized there is no need for me to reload for that gun. lol

The Lapua Mega factory load shot amazingly well for me too. I bought probably 30 boxes on closeout for less than the cost of empty cases, but I don't think it's imported to the US anymore. I don't know if you've measured it, but it is pretty anemic at just under 2300 fps out of my No 1.

I also bought some Nosler ammo for a really good price (again just for the cases), both Partition and Accubond loads and the velocity was about 100 fps lower than advertised. They must have been using a 26" test barrel at least!

With reloading the 250 Nosler Accubond, it really becomes a long range capable cartridge. 2600 fps with RL-17, or 2550 with W760 or Big Game. I also loaded the 325 Oryx to 2325 in my #1 but it wouldn't shoot near as well as the Accubond.

As an aside, the sadistic stock design of the Ruger made shooting 325s off the bench very unpleasant. By contrast my Blaser S2 is easy and fun to shoot even full throttle 325 grainers.

I’m going to have to make up some 250 AB loads then.

I only got into shooting 9.3x74r after the RE17 disappeared. I found that the Vhit powders have been excellent. N540 for bullets 250 and under, and N550 for heavier. N550 is similar to CFE223 in burn rate but less dense, and more uniform for velocities. I would give it a try.

Just wanted to say thanks for the excellent customer service. Ordered some 9.3x62 brass and the delivery was a little short. An email through your website Contact Us link was replied to the next day with the tracking info for the correction. Good pricing coupled with great customer service will see returning customers every time. Thanks again!
