Hi HuntingGold,

Buy them all!! Starting 1995 I used those first BARNES X in my 375 H&H, in 250 gr. Used 300 (6 boxes of 50), 95% at papers, 5%, really less, at game.
And yes, they fouled the barrel noticeable more than the Hornady 270 gr Spire Point, my main hunting bullet then, but I got wonderful accuracy with my loads, Winchester cases, WLRM primers and R15, at 2850 with entirely safe pressures.

Just been loading some 9.3 x 62 for the new editor of sporting shooter. He has just returned from smashing some scrub bulls up in the territory. Another happy camper.

The Re17 seems OK in the Whelen by what I have been reading with the heavier weights.
If the 62 smashes scrubbers the Whelen with 275s,310s or 225 Atomic29 should have similar results .

Yeah it would do just fine with any of them. 30-06 with a good 180 would do the trick. I load 15 in the 62 with 286 grs , I find it gives the best velocity up to tugs

Mate you could always use the same gunsmith both @K95 and I use, plus he is a master with M17 actions. He built my 35AI on a trimmed down M17 into a Remington model 30 style action and I saw the the 500 he built on a M17.

Rob is a master with M17s and will build it how you want.
Just remember Rome wasn't built in a day nor is a custom rifle. You won't be disappointed with Rob's work . Some of the work he did trimming my 17 down

Where in the sunny state do you live.
I'm going up around the Sunshine Coast soon to pick up my mounts and skins.

Building a custom rifle is not cheap these days. I have a lot of mates that talk about going down that path , but real numbers these days are around 4K if you have to buy everything. My solution is buy a nice factory rifle , I see as new Sauer, Tikka, Bergara, a lovely Mauser M12, and just the other day a beautiful Sako Barvarian for 2.5k . A reaming job $150 and you have a cracking rifle with beautiful wood for $2650. You won’t build a rifle for that. You have money left over to go towards a nice scope. And you won’t have to wait forever to get it.

Here is a group I shot on the weekend with my 9.3 x 64. The bullet out of the group was the first one I fired, it had the magneto speed attached to the barrel giving me the velocity of 2640, it was a very cold day. I find that with the chronograph attached to the barrel it upsets the accuracy. The next four were shot without it. .447. This is common with a Spittles chambering job.

Prying Rel 17 out of my hands would be much the same as you parting with yours. It’s so hard to get . I’d go so far to say that Reloader 15 would be better in the Whelan. 17 works better with a case capacity of around 80 grs , working weight 75 grs.

Depends on your doner action Ken. I picked up my M17 complete rifle for 125 dollars. Timney trigger, MAB stainless barrel and Boyd's stock plus Rob's work 2,500 dollars all up. That was 5 years ago.
Yes I was lucky with the action.
Different action higher price.
I could have got a new Zastava magnum action with mad and bottom metal a few weeks ago for $600. Turned it down as I didn't have a use for it.

That’s my point, you had everything cheap and it still cost you 2.5 k 5 yr ago. With a after market stock. A nice piece of walnut will cost at least $500 plus tips and caps, recoil pad, sling mounts. Then another 2k to have it built to fit you like a custom rifle should , inlaying, bedding, checkering, oil finished, we’re pushing 5k now with no scope or mounts. Considering a lovely Sako Barvarian or what ever floats your boat in the caliber you want for half, I know which way I would go now after building custom rifles. Nick says he would never built another rifle when there are such good valued ones over the counter. Even buying a premium one it’s way cheaper than building one.

Prices have gone up heaps mate.
When I got the Boyd's walnut stock for my 25 the Aussie dollars was worth 1.25 dollars US, so I got it delivered to the door for $86AUD. Now the same stock is over $300 AUD. A 35 CAL barrel from MAB was $540 4 years ago.
Maybe I need to revisit some prices to get updated I'm a bit behind the times.

I've just picked up a voere with a 24" barrel chambered in this great cartridge, just waiting for it and the pta to arrive. Now too load up some ammunition which will most likely be the 286gr tsx I have sitting here.

Are you in Australia by any chance. If so we gave some brilliant bullets made here in Aus that I think will be much better than the 286 Barnes. These bullets are quite long being copper taking up quite a lot of case capacity. l have been doing quite a lot of loading research with the 9.3-64 for a upcoming article I will be doing for sporting shooter. Have you had any experience or second hand experience you would care too share about either of the above mentioned projectiles?

You have yourself a great caliber there. The outer edge are a good bullet and very accurate. I have only tried them in 338 and 7mm not 9.3 cal. They look like a target bullet with a high bc. Only problem is you will need a long magazine or seat them deep into the case taking up powder space. The A tomic are shorter not having that problem. A mate of mine who is doing some testing for me at the moment lined up to big pigs the other day. At 159 yds shot the first pig through the shoulders, then hit the second pig in the shoulder and pulled up under the skin on the off side. Perfect straight line penetration and opened up to around 5/8” in diameter retaining 249 grs for 250.

My son used outer edge 140gr 308s in Namibia. They worked extremely well. First shot on a zebra at around 150 yards was spot on, but it didn't know it was dead. He put the 2nd shot into it at around 190 yards and over it went.
Both shots were thru and thru and the blood trail could have been followed by Stevie Wonder. Massive internal damage. The were all very accurate in his Howa.
They even have extensive reloading data for their projectiles.
I have some of Cameron's Atomic 29s to try in my Whelen. They are loaded to 2,900fps and are extremely accurate producing .75 inch groups at 100 yards.

I've never failed or had a bad result from Experimenting. Found a few ways to do things differently that didn't work. All good fun plus more excuses to go hunting or to the range.

The Atomic 9.3 bullet weights 250 gr and takes up the same space as a lead 286 gr. A bit different than the outer edge bullet. I will be using the Atomic pill next month when I go Sambar hunting again. I have ordered 100 x 9.3 cal bullets from Cameron to complete my load development. When I have finished I can send you all the loading data. So far my favorite loads are the 285 gr Norma Oryx with 74 grs of Rel 17
for 2650 fps. This is a very accurate load with mild pressures in my rifle.
I am also getting similar velocity with the 300 gr Swift A frame again with Rel 17
