BF I'm familiar with John's writings on loading the 9.3X62 and have talked with him on the subject. I tried using Big Game powder but started showing pressure signs well before the listed maximums showed. I've used W760 with good results but right now I've settled on RL-15. I'm getting slightly faster than factory velocities and excellent accuracy. Rl-17 seems to be the velocity king and yes it's possible to near match 9.3X64 specs. BUT,... I'm not a velocity chaser. I'll take accuracy first every time. Excess velocity causes over expansion (or complete bullet failure) and limits penetration. The 9.3X62 has been harvesting big game for a long time at 2350fps for a long time. the only thing that really held it back was bullets that failed and broke up on impact. Now days bullets like A-Frames, North Fork, Barnes and Woodleigh have brought out the true potential of this grand cartridge. Frankly, I'll stick with what works and the warp speed crowd can have their Ear Splitten Loudenboomers. LOL.

Hey guys I just bought some Ramshot Big Game Smokeless Rifle powder. Midway has a great sale on it right now at $39 with free shipping. Is the one please?

My CZ 550 American 9.3x62. I bought this rilfe off of another AH member who had taken mule deer, cow elk and audad prior to my ownership. I have new glass bedding, Timney trigger, AHR three position safety. Talley Rings. Leupold 2x10 fire dot CDS. Awesome sling..thanks CBeck! This rifle took a lot of critters in Zambia this summer and I plan on using it as my primary deer and hog rifle this year back home in Arkansas. Loaded 250 Aframes at 2550, it shoots them very well, but honestly i didn't like the lack of expansion in nearly every case on PG. I am going to plain old 286 PPI softs for deer and pigs.

Interesting about you speaking with John B. about his loads. I will admit that it's been a few years since he wrote that article about his loads for the 9.3x62. I've been meaning to try Big Game powder in my 9.3x62 but I haven't done so yet.

I hear you about RL-15 and the 9.3x62. I've been out of the shooting game for that past 15+ years or so and I'm just now easing my way back into it. I just kind of lost interest after my trip to SA in 2005 and I moved on to some other hobbies. (Spent some money on astronomical telescopes; nothing really fancy.) I'm now renewing my interest in shooting and I quickly found out that the times have certainly changed in the shooting world!

IMO, the only problem with RL-15 and RL-17 powders is trying to find some! I think Alliant has gotten out of the powder business (or least selling it to civilian consumers). That came as a big surprise to me. I had good luck with RL-15 in my .35 Whelen and 9.3x62. Now I have to start over and work up some loads; which I have gotten off my lazy rear end and done yet.

Anyway. . . Here's my load that I used in South Africa back in 2005. It worked just fine.

BF thanks for the reply. I've been reloading for 60+ years now and really enjoy it. John is a true gentleman and a pleasure to talk with. I managed to lay in a good supply of RL-15 before the dry spell hit. The Reloader powders are manufactured in Sweden I believe and most of their production is now going to military contracts (Ukraine) and are likely to be scarce for some time. Like I said, try W760. Takes more powder (I've used loads up to 63.0grn) and will have moderate compression at max loads but I never had pressure signs and very good velocities. Big Game just didn't work in my rifle.
Shooting 4 different medium bore rifles the 9.3X62 has become my favorite medium. Do keep in touch. And that's a very good Warthog in that picture.

I’m still new to the 9.3x62 and to reloading and appreciate all the good info on AH. I just picked up some Big Game when I saw it on sale—just figured I’d try out since so many folks mention it. I’ve been having good results using W748 with 286 grn Aframes and PPU as well as Speer 270 grn; easily getting to the 2350 fps I wanted out of my Husky 640.

I notice I never see anyone else mention using w748?

Good day. W748 is a good powder to use but it is a little faster burning. Very similar to Varget. I tend to use W748 in my 358 Winchester and prefer RL-15 and W760 for the larger capacity cases. I do prefer bal powders as they have a lower flame temperature which makes it easier on chamber throats. As long as you're getting the accuracy you want there is no reason not to use W748. Another powder that is overlooked is H-380. I use this powder with 250grn A-Frames in the 9.3X62.

Just a little correction to my post above. The next to last sentence should have read:

"Now I have to start over and work up some loads; which I have not gotten off my lazy rear end and done yet."

I know it's not that big of a deal to make a typo when posting but it was bugging me.

LH Zastava 98 Mauser. 22 inch barrel. Luepold VX6 1-6X28 scope in S&K rings and bases. Model 70 style 3 position safety. Restocked by good friend Pete Underwood. Shoots NF 286grn softs and solids at 2400fps into tiny 1 hole ragged groups.
How did you do the safety? I have the standard 2 pos. safety on my LH zastava 9.3x62

Curious who you bought yours from, AFAIK only 1 dude in the US ever carried them.

Hi Atticus,

In my BRNO ZKK 600 9,3x62 I use R15 for 220 grs (Slovenian FOX) to the various 250 grs bullets. And W760 for the heavier ones.
But I also tried W748 for the lighter ones with very good results. In the lots I have, the W748 is 2 to 3 grs slower than the R15. So, I will try it with 286 grs bullets.

Good luck!

CF

I find the 748 is quite accurate in my Husky 640 although the SD is a bit wider than I would like. I was at the range the other day sighting in for an upcoming deer hunt with some Speer 270gr hot core-- there is no reason to use the 286gr A-frames I loaded for Moose on a whitetail.

The top 4 is to see location with the different load at 100yds going 2350 FPS

3" high @100

3" low are at 200.

the one just off the bull is me holding high at 200

That'll work--MPBR= 230 yards

Better make sure your Safari operator and PH are ok because in SA it is not legal. Other countries I do not know. I would like to use mine on my next trip if the PH is ok with it
In South Africa will be legal with 300 grs bullet weight. In some lands in South Africa no limits about minimum caliber and energy too.

I have got it some month ago in pdf .Unbeliveable stories about it like any other caliber ever made!!

Okay everyone, as usual all of you are killing me!!! The 9.3X62 is the one Africa Caliber I feel like I have never owned. I am getting tempted to buy one but fortunately cannot find one!

They have the Field Ethos 9.3x62 on a Sauer action…..shot one last Saturday…was a demo rifle so many had shot before I got to it but notable when I shot the 2nd shot the front sight fell off…Nice looking and handling rifle but the front sight should stay stationary…..
Price does not equate to quality!

It is the 3rd generation, made by Merkel at Suhl, while the 2 previous generations were made at Obendorf-am-Neckar by H&K itself.

It is a very reliable gas operated rifle and it has never jammed with all ammunitions used, from Norma Vulkan 232 gr up to Norma Oryx 286 gr. Not the most beautiful gun but very effective in driven hunt.

With its "grand-mother", the famous H&K 940.

I heard this rifle was also made in 9.3x62 just before to be discontinued, but I have never encountered one so far, I just saw one or two magazines with the caliber written on them.
This one is in 7x64, and it doesn't work with the classic gas operated system but with a delayed roller locked bolt system. The most reliable hunting rifle ever made for me.

The 9.3x62 was a very picky caliber for semi-automatic rifles, and all gun makers had problems with it at the beginning.
H&K was the first one to provide us rifles working flawlessly with this caliber. Now, we also find Browning, Winchester and Benelli rifles in 9.3x62.
The 4th and last generation of H&K was made by Haenel but it is discontinued now. Same thing with the Merkel SR2.
Voere also manufactures its 2185 in 9.3x62, but I have never seen one.
I have a Garand in 9.3x62 and it is as reliable as a sewing machine

Sir, I think I have been writing to you about the purchase of the HK 639 rifle under an email "Tt Jake." If this is you, then I am truly interested. I am just trying to verify identify. Tt Jake is asking for a cash transaction. No disrespect intended, Just trying to verify who I am talking to. Thank you. Respectfully. Dan

Hey my friend, I am returning to SA for a Cape Buffalo hunt in June 26. My outfitter has suggested Highveld but I have read some poor reports. Wondering how satisfied you were with your mounts from them? Thanks in advance.
