8x68S owner's opinions

Looking at the quality of my .458 Mannlicher Scoenauer with its ultra smooth bolt..your 8x68 Mannlicher Schoenauer must be a perfect rifle.....you are very fortunate.....the 8x68 rifles barrels are made from special steel...please upload photos of your rifle , I need to look at it just to enjoy it`s beauty....

Here is the gun. I have not had it re blued or restock as I want to keep it as original as possible. I also try not to use it too much in fear of wearing out the pipe. I now my old man sent many round through it.

The scope is an old Zeiss but still very good. You can only adjust it vertically. Horizontal adjustment is done on the claw mount.

My old man left it in Zambia with a friend before he passed away. 8 years later I collected it and took it to Denmark. When I test shot it in Denmark it was still spot on even after sitting that long!

Beautiful, this is a rifle you will never get again, I am sure you will not shoot out it`s barrel....use it and enjoy it...it really is a gem...you are extremely fortunate ...congratulations...

Wow that is a beautiful rifle. Love the butter knife bolt handle. Looks like a true classic. Gert is right. This is something I don't think you will ever find again especially in 8x68! Gotta love the Zeiss brand!
I took my 8x68 out for a "spin" at the local club a year or two ago after it had sat in a case for 20 odd years and it had been apart of multiple moves covering hundreds of miles. The Leupold VXIII scope was still close to zero just a minor adjustment an it was perfect.
Good luck with the rifle!

Thanks guys. IMO 8x68S is a very under rated caliber. It has a mother punch.

Mike, Faisal supplies me with Norma ammo for it. Not cheap here in Zambia though. But worth it!!

Yes, maybe I should have been more specific...it is a beautiful , one of it`s kind rifle ...you really have a gem ...I can assure you it will be unlikely to shot the barrel out ....

I will build my 8x68 caliber rifle on the following example..also a Mannlicher schoenauer....this is the best design I have seen so far..I really will try my best to copy this rifle...Beautiful straight stock, slim stock design and the 28.5 inch Mauser sportster profile will just do the trick...although the barrel will be heavy as well...I am sure it will balance good...

gert it will be a nice looking rifle, but just to upset MR VD @Velo Dog the barrel would have to be max 22inch for me ;)

No,no gentlemen , to reach far you need to have at least a 28.5 inch barrel to ensure a complete burn-out of the powder you would use, especially our slow burning powders we use in South Africa...S385 ...and I always had a great affection for a long barrel rifle...with this sleek stock design a long barrel will only be a compliment to the rifle....

Well as I always say, Long guns for long men:A Outta:

It really looks like Mannlicher Schoenauer company has build good quality rifles when it was still possible to build expensive rifles....:)

Another Mannlicher Schoenauer - mod GK in 7x64 from 1963 with a Hensoldt Diasta 4x32 on original Steyr-Pivot - Montage :

Gentlemen, it is another beautiful piece of art.... These old stalwarts have been build to last for ever....Mannlicher, is it still possible to get hold of the scope/scope bases and rings on this particular rifle...will it be possible to get a set for my .458 Mannlicher Schoenauer/ .I heard about a 9.3x62 Mannlicher Schoenauer that is for sale in Pretoria, I am tempted to buy it, the price is reasonable..R23 000 ...I think if it is in such a good condition the owner said it is ..I really am thinking seriously of taking it...

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
