Recently bought a 7x64 Tikka 22 in barrel. And wondering what I can expect for top end velocities with 150 and 175 gr bullets.
I fired the S&B 173 gr to collect the brass as I will be reloading , the S&B were deadly accurate but, only 2600fps.
I reload for 30-06….150gr ttsx at 3100fps and 178gr eldx 2780fps from a 22 inch bbl.
Also 270 Winchester 150gr Accubond 3000fps from 22 inch bbl.
Given case capacity and bullet weight , should the 7x64 velocity be very similar ?

Bullets I have on hand..
140 nosler ballistic tip.
150 Hornady CX.
175 Nosler partition.
175 Speer grand slam.

Powders…
Big game
Superformance
Sta-ball 6.5
Magnum
N560 ( bought this after looking at Vihtavuori data, rare powder here in Canada and $30lb more lol) this powder shows max of 2900fps with 150.

Data for the 7x64 is slim and seems the European data is loaded at more realistic pressures for modern rifles, North American data for 7x64 is not much better than a 7mm-08 or 7x57.

Is anyone achieving 3000fps with 150s……2750 with 175s? If so what data do you use pls.

Cheers

I have had people refer me to both .280rem and 7x65rimmed load data.

I only recently started loading for a 7x64 in a Tikka

Accurate but no chronograph velocity yet.

I found the slower ADI powder 2209 and 2213sc produced the better accuracy.

Look for their Hodgdon equivalent

I'm getting just a skosh under 2750 with 175 gr Partitions out of my 280AI using IMR4831

I can't find 175 gr Noslers anymore, so about to switch to North Forks, bought 2 boxes of the 175 gr SS

Have used 7x64 twice in RSA took everything up to and including Zebras and blue wildebeest a very impressive round ...use heavy bullets 170 plus and job done

Hi,

When I had my Mannlicher-Schoenauer GK 7x64, 60 cm barrel lenght, I got 2850 with 160/162 grs and 2750 f/s with 175 grs. With the Hornady 154 grs Spire Point I got 2900 f/s.
My loads, all with Alliant R22, were:
Hornady 154 grs 59 grs
All 160 grs 58 grs
All 173/175/177 grs 56 grs
The other powder I use with stellar performance was IMR 7828 normal.
All heavier bullets with 58 grs for 2750 f/s.

Good luck!

I load a variety of 160 gr. Bullets and use those loads in three 7x64 rifles.
160 gr. Speer, Nosler, Sierra and IMR4831 56 gr. STD primer, not magnum. Cases have been several types, Rem, Fed, Norma, RWS. Velocity runs 2850-2900 FPS.
Also, VV N160 57 gr. / 160 nos. Ptn / Norma case / Rem 9-1/2 = 2850 FPS. Accurate and deadly.

Great cartridge and easy to load for…
Performance is very similar to that of the 30-06 with similar bullet weights.
150 @ around 2900, 160 @ 2750-2800, 175 @ 2650-2700.
Only powders I’ve worked with are all in the 4350 or similar class.
VV N160 & 550, IMR 4350 etc.
With the short 22” barrel, a slightly faster powder could be the ticket.
I would start with N550 or your closest alternative.
