7X57 or 7mm-08 or 308

@Sarg
Would love a suppressor for my sons 08 but unfortunately a no no.
I have loaded some 190gn subX for him with 12gn of trail boss for 1,200fps. Fine out to 100 and has a similar trajectory to a 22lr
Bob
Bob Bob you need to get out more & not in the Ute-Bakkie !

I didn’t like suppressors either until Everyone had one & a lot of properties won’t let you on without them as it doesn’t scare the shit out of stock AND game wink wink !

I was using a 15in Sako 75 308Win with 10in over barrel suppressor when I was doing control work, using crappy PPU factory (as was supplied) I shot near 1000 animals, Deer & Pigs 425m was dead first short my longest on that job was 620m.

I ranged them with the Geovids & used the Mil-dot.

wouldn’t have got half those without the muffler !

@R eight
We won't hold that against you
There's a few great blokes in here from QLD. One even owns a 350 REM mag but unfortunately he also owns a 243 that he tried to get me to hold. Didn't work tho did it @rdog
Bob

Hey Bob ! I reckon there’s a good chance you live in Durassic Park .

Nah mate
Just that shithole state that's broke, you know New South Wales but some of us have no options.
The Ripoff state!

At least the East Coast gets funding, coincidentally NSW means

Newcastle
Sydney
Wollongong

7mm-08, I’ll vote with my wallet.

I’m in the process of getting a 7mm-08 ready for my kids on their first trip to Africa this summer. We will be hunting plaines game in the Northern Cape of South Africa before heading to Cape Town.

Browning A-bolt II Micro Hunter
-barrel cut from 20” to 18”
-suppressed
-Timney trigger
-overall length 43”

A Swarovski Z3 would probably have been a better choice due to its size and weight but I already had a S&B Klassik 2.5-10x56 sitting on the shelf. The latter is probably a better choice for low light hunting white tailed deer in Alabama this fall.

Nice, I’m all for the 7mm-08 . I would like to see more of them. Mine is a medium profile 20” that was basically used from the vehicle.

I would like a lightweight 21” sporter 7mm-08

@Sideshow
Those New Zealanders are a mad mob.
They cut the barrel down to 16" to make it handier in think bush, then add a 12" suppressor to quite it down
WHY not just leave it at 22" instead of cutting it down so you can turn the barrel into a 28". Just don't make sense to this Aussie.
My brother in law did that and said he cut it down to make it better in the bush. When I explained it to him he had a Homer Simpson moment just saying DOH.
Not the brightest move but hey that's New Zullenders.
Bob
While I have some sympathy for your point of view and also run a 22 inch unsurpassed 7mm08 I also have mates running surpassed 16 inch barrel .308s with 5 inch suppressors. They are short and handy as well as a little quieter but are also capable out to 300+ yds.

My short bush rifle is a bergara b13 16 inch 44magnum single shot with a red dot and short suppressor. Way shorter again and balances like a dream offhand. Good to 100 yds.

Looking at getting a new lightweight hunting rifle mainly for deer,hogs, and potentially Africa plains game in the next decade. I recently went to Africa with my 308 Bergara and it did great but it was in the heavy side although not unbearable. Anyways I’m looking at a 16” 308 or 16” 7mm-08 and a Winchester model 70 7X57 that I’d have threaded (I know threading it would ruin the value of the gun but if I can help it I’m going to shoot suppressed no matter what) does anyone have any experience with these guns in these configurations? More so asking about the 16” guns as I know the 7X57 would do great but just figured I throw that bit of info in there for context.
I'm a big fan of the 7mm-08. Very flat shooting, does very well with factory manufactured ammo, and is relatively easy to find ammo for. I've taken hogs at 800 yards with it and punched steel at 1000yrds.

My Remington XCR II (they don't make them anymore) has a very corrosion resistant TriNyte plating, the soft stock soaks up recoil and my 375 Weatherby (started out as a 375 H&H) only weights 7 1/2 lbs (weighed on a postal scale) with a 24" barrel, Talley steel QR rings, NECG steel open sights and a Leupold 2-7x Firedot scope. I think the 7mm-08s came with a 22" barrel.

Ruger Compact in 7MM-08 or 308 would be what you're describing. I have one in 7mm-08 for sale.

I went .308 myself. Christensen Arms Ridgeline Carbon, swapped out a 16” barrel and slapped a muffler on it and a 3.5-10x Leup VX3. The cheapest 150 grain winchester blue box cup & core ammo.

Where I hunt. Whitetail, average shots are 110 yards. A long shot is 125.

I have other rifles for other jobs. This rig is purely about white tails where I hunt.

7mm-08.

If you are going to use a suppressor, then I would opt for the .308 because the same suppressor can be used with .300 ACC without modification.

Many .300 ACC subsonic loads are very quite, although I have found their penetration to be terribly inadequate.
