7x57 manufacturers

The Ammo Fairy on GB sent me this reply, regarding a question on primer type on the 1935 vintage FN ammo.

I think I'll stick to the newer, name brand ammo.

they are berdan only problem we have encountered is that primers are seated low and some firing pins are not long enough to strike fully otherwise no problems

My daughter and I went to the range yesterday with the new Win M70 to give it a try. I mounted a Leupold VX3 2.5x8x36mm scope on it with Talley lightweight rings. This was a first time to try these rings and I think I really like the design with the integrated base. Just wish Tally had some instructions with the rings. A quick phone call to the Talley customer service cleared up my problem. Got the scope mounted and a simple bore sighting. Shot the rifle a few times at 25 yards and was just a little high and to the right. Made a few clicks of adjustment and moved to the 100 yard range.

The first pleasant surprise was the magazine holds 5 rounds!

I shot a box of Sellier & Bellot 173 gr spire points and groupings were not good, but we were making adjustments and cleaning the barrel every couple of shots. Very little copper fouling was noticeable. The recoil is nothing on this rifle and everything worked great. Closing the bolt was a little stiff, but put a little dab of grease on the flats of the bolt and it gradually got better. After about 30 rounds, we called it a day since the heat index was around 100 F.

I went back to the range early this morning to beat the heat and test some different ammo.

The target above is Winchester 145 gr Super X Power Point

Target #2, above, is with Norma 156 gr Oryx.

The last group worth mentioning is the Sellier & Bellot 140 gr FMJ. A pretty nice 5 shot group. Doubt if I'll shoot these at anything, but at $19/box the S&B ammo is good for range work.

I want to try a few Hornady bullets and also some Swift A-Frames next. All in all, very happy with the rifle.

@ 375 Ruger Fan, Are you planning on using factory ammo or reloads?

For now, factory or some custom stuff from Hendershots. When I was a kid, I reloaded with my Dad but haven't done any in many years. Might get back into reloading when I retire.

Hey there 375 Ruger Fan, you may want to try the Hornady Superformance ammo branded 7X57. They have a 139gr SST load at 2740 fps. This load grouped sub-moa in my Savage. Also, if you can find some, they had a 139gr GMX load at the same velocity. Haven't tried the later, but it should be worth trying. Good shooting

I spoke with barnes and they recommended trying 145gn lrx or 150gn ttsx both open up well to around 1500fps

@John Struewing: Yes, those are two types of ammo I want to try. All my normal sources for ammo just reported "out of stock" for both the SST and GMX. I use the SST in my 270 and it does very well. I want to try the lighter GMX in several of my rifles (270, 338 WM and 375 Ruger). BTW, it was Wik Coetze at @Game 4 Africa Safaris that introduced me to the Hornady SST bullet. They use it in their Sako 7mm mag rental rifles and my daughter and I took 8 PG, all with single shot kills. I later used the SST in my 270 on a Yukon Dall Sheep hunt and had another one shot kill @ 234 yards. Accurate and deadly!

My first Africa hunt, I killed all my medium to large PG animals with a 200 gr. SST out of a custom muzzleloader, all but one with one shot. Hunt deer with same gun and have killed more than I can remember with the same bullet.

Midway is still out of stock on the 7x57 SST and GMX Superformance ammo. Same with Brownells. Found some on Wholesale Hunter and made an order for a couple of boxes of each. Hopefully will have them by next weekend and spend another day at the range.

I've got a box of 139 SST, 8 boxes of 139 PVRI, 1 box of Federal 140 and three Remington Corelok. What part of town do you live in? Was headed to the Texas City range today to shoot my 7x57 and 6.5x55. I'm overstocked on brass and bullets for the 7 mm and can hook you up at cost on the factory stuff.

I just received my latest Cabelas Shooting catalog. They list loaded ammo and component bullets. That doesn't mean that they are in stock but maybe. Good Luck.

@Sand Rat : Thanks for the offer. I am actually up in Shreveport this weekend. I still have Winchester and S&B ammo to hold me until the Hornady arrives. When I am in Houston during the week, I am on the west side of town and usually shoot at American Shooting Center.

How do you like the 139 gr SST?

I thought about buying a case of the PVRI as Wholesale Hunter had them for a little over $13/box when buying a case of 10 boxes.

The SST were the best grouping in factory and reloads but the 156 gr Oryx reloads just makes everything lay down and take a dirt nap! The PVRI shot OK, when I bought my CZ American off Gunbroker the guy threw in a bunch of it in the deal and I've got eight boxes left. The brass reloads good as well. I'll let you have mine for that price if you're interested. When are you headed back down 59? I'll be in Nacogdoches on Thursday.

Brass turned up from America after 7 weeks. Compared to a 30-06 for those that haven't seen the round.

Not a case I would have guessed gained fame for its ability to kill elephants and maneating tigers, never judge a book by its cover I guess!

You are going to like it! 160 and 175 gr Swift A-Frames are incredible in the 7x57. Penetration has to be seen to be believed. Last year quartering frontal shots on zebra and wildebeest exited and produced very quick one shot kills with a 175 gr A-Frame.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
