6,5x68s reloading data!

I also hunt roe and red deer, but gams (chamois) is the main prey...

I would Love to bag one of those someday they are a hardy creature and quite tough to get a trophy class as i understand it.

Hows the effect of the nosler on a red deer go down stay down or does it run? If so about how long given a heart/lung hit?

I only shot 3 red deer with the 6,5x68 ... not a reliable data base,.... but performance an roe and chamois is impressive.

Alright good and thats with the partition? Main hunting with it will be Walk and stalk on roe deer.

In the mountains, especially in rough terrain, it can be extremely important to kill the animal instantly.

It can be lost, when it is able to run away only a few meters...,,

6,5x68 with this light Nosler is a hammer......may be a big one for a roe...

I know a guy who shot a chamois with a 7mm Rem Mag. Middle part of the animal reportedly disappeared. I say reportedly because he was in the next side valley from my party, up the Travers in Nelson Lakes National Park in the South Island.

Help needed. Maybe somebody knows what i do wrong. Bullet 120 gr hornady gmx. Powder vv n160. I tried about 10 diferent loads from 60-68 grains. And i have no result. My bullets hits a target with it's side?
Need a solution.....

Andriux,

Does your rifle group well with other bullets or loads? I re-crowned a rifle that was spraying bullets all over the place and that alone brought the rifle back to shooting consistent groups. I am not familiar with the 6.5x68 round, but found a Chuck Hawks article on it. Appears to be in the 270 class.

The 6.5 x 68 by its' very nature is a speedy little rascal. If 129 Gr. bullets shot well I think I'd try something heavier like a 140 Gr. I wanted to use a 140 GMX in my 6.5 x 55 Swedish Mauser. The trouble was I couldn't find any, I called Hornady and asked their Ballistics Technician about it. He told me that they couldn't get the 140 Gr. GMX to stabilize. Mind you this was at 2775 FPS. I suspect that you are running into the same issue with your 6.5 x 68 and its' higher velocities with the 120 Gr. I really like the 140 Gr. bullets in this caliber so I went "old school" Nosler Partitions for deer size animals and Swift A Frames. Since then accuracy and bullet performance has never been an issue. BTW I'd love to get my hands on a 6.5 x 68. I've never seen one on this side of the ocean.

Blaser has the 6.5X68 in their R8. I have it in the 8X68s, nice cartridge, and was thinking about getting the 6.5X68 too but Weatherby came out with their 6.5-300Wby. Needless to say I got that instead.

Hello everyone!

I have just recently got my hands on a mauser obendorf sporter in 6,5x68s and i need some good reloading data for the calibre.

Thanks in advance Coldswede.

Just came across this thread today. Curious as to what you've come up with for a load. As I play around with Quick Load it looks to me that Alliant's RL25 & RL33 and VhitaVuori N560 & N570 would work the best in the 6.5X68. Also I understand that VhitaVuori is introducing N565 which should be another contender.

Got a hold of some RWS factory ammo and using that right now since my local shop didnt have any of the Swift-a frame / partition or similar bullets that will hold up for the velocity. But the real load development will begin Both for my 6,5x68 and my 8x68s during spring to be ready for when autumn hunting season starts.

In the 8X68s I have gotten excellent results with N550 & RL16 shooting 170-180gr bullets and Alliants 4000MR with 220-250gr bullets. Keep us posted with your results and Merry Christmas.

That GMX monolithic bullet (which is long for its weight) will not stabilize properly in your rifle, due to the twist rate BUT that is good news for your hunting and practice budget! The slower twist rate will allow you to use Nosler Partitions and other lead-core bullets designed for use in the 6.5x55, 6.5x57, etc.

If you want a harder bullet, the 139gr Hornady Interlock, which was designed to expand in medium game when fired from the fast-twist barrel of a Winchester Model 70 .264 Winchester Magnum rifle, may be the best option. That bullet has been known to pencil through the chest of a red deer spiker when shot from a 6.5x55 with the original 1 in 200mm twist but could be a very good option for shoulder shots with your rifle. Also, your rifling will last longer with that slower, and to my mind, more sensible, twist rate.

Rotational velocity is a function of muzzle velocity and twist rate.. It stays virtually the same until the projectile loses stability at maximum range. The greater the rotational velocity, the greater the friction generated by contact with the air, which is one reason why long range target shooters always use the slowest practicable twist rate in their barrels. Divide the number twelve (12) by the twist rate in inches for your barrel OR if using metres per second, divide a metre by the metric rifling figure. You can, by doing this, extrapolate design rotational velocities in fps OR m/s for various projectiles, not necessarily to Ballistic laboratory standards but well enough to select suitable bullets to test in your rifle. I suspect that RWS could probably make suitable recommendations in regard to usage of their lead-core bullets in your rifle.

Have a good New Year!

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
